dsda-doom source port [v0.24.3]
Marisa the Magician replied to GoneAway's topic in Speed Demo Submissions
Was wondering where I could report this but... I haven't been able to build dsda-doom from source on Linux for several months now. The compiler output looks like this: /home/marisa/.cache/paru/clone/dsda-doom-git/src/dsda-doom/prboom2/src/MUSIC/dumbplayer.c:74:27: error: unknown type name ‘off64_t’ 74 | #define DUMB_OFF_T_CUSTOM off64_t | ^~~~~~~ In file included from /home/marisa/.cache/paru/clone/dsda-doom-git/src/dsda-doom/prboom2/src/MUSIC/dumbplayer.c:78: /usr/include/dumb.h:136:1: error: static assertion failed: "dumb: off_t must be 64bit" 136 | _Static_assert(sizeof(dumb_off_t) >= 8, "dumb: off_t must be 64bit"); | ^~~~~~~~~~~~~~ -

That sounds fun for a mini-mod idea. -

I wouldn't really agree that the movement is perfect, considering how friction makes it seem like all the floors are lubed up. :V -
Let's discuss the essence of Doom
Marisa the Magician replied to Sneezy McGlassFace's topic in Doom General
Honestly, the main explanation I can give about that first point is that we, as gameplay modders, tend to be that first and foremost, and when it comes to mapping we're either not very skilled or just plain can't wrap our heads around it. Now, if some mappers were kind enough to make mapsets centered around gameplay mods, that'd be very nice. There's a bunch of 'em made for Supercharge already, so things ARE at least happening. -
80's and 90's pc games Set in haunted houses...

People tend to forget about the first "true" survival horror game: Sweet Home It served as the main inspiration for the Resident Evil series, so there's that. -
Times you've confused a WAD with another

I used to go around saying that I loved Reverie. Turns out I was thinking of Hellcore, I actually don't like Reverie. -
I gotta say, the first time I played dead.wire I was on the edge of my seat at all times. The music definitely did its job, too.

Watched a bit of this on vile's stream, and liked what I saw. Definitely giving it a spin later. -
It's a fairly solid game, and I enjoy playing it. My one major gripe with it, however, is how DENSE it is. The world map is immense, and there's just an obscene amount of little things and places here and there that could be easily missable unless you practically comb every corner of the world map. For example, many have already commented on how easy it is to break NPC questlines because there's no clear direction on what to do and where to go, and so many factors that affect progression without the player being exactly aware of it. Looks like applying the Souls formula to an open-world game comes with its consequences, in the end. About half of my play time before finally beating it was spent in confusion as to where to go next. But that's not to say it wasn't an enjoyable experience. All those hour sunk into "where the fuck do I go?" were full of interesting encounters as well. The problem now would be the replay value. Just the thought that I might have to sink 80 more hours into it to beat it another time, with another character, was crushingly demoralizing. But that's my general sentiment with games of this scale. If this one were moddable to the level of other games of the style, then maybe I would be more interested in that, since it's what I usually do when I can't be arsed to re-do the whole main story all over again. Just pile up mods and screw around on my own.

Other's have already mentioned it and I have to agree. How can you even DARE call it "MAX" if you're not going also for 100% items? That ain't "MAX" at all if you're only maxing out two of the tallies now, ain't it? Maybe it should be given a less misleading name, because for the longest time I did make the assumption that it also went for all items, and was confused when I finally sat down and watched some runs myself.

How would you make a Doom Superweapon?
Marisa the Magician replied to Zulk RS's topic in Doom General
I still think that as far as superweapons go, probably one of the most effective and efficient at its job is the Redeemer from Unreal Tournament. Massive area denial, and of course, it does come at the cost of you potentially getting caught in it if you don't keep your distance. I'm not really a fan of superweapons without drawbacks, because it makes them feel cheap, they become a "get out of jail free" card. -

Mods that are cool but trigger your ocd
Marisa the Magician replied to mankubus's topic in Doom General
I'm such a sucker for accurate representation of firearms that there are some mods that bother me A LOT in how they handle that stuff. Reloading mechanics, no "one in the chamber" for various firearms, ammo belts that don't move, magazines that aren't visibly empty when they should... And pumping for the sake of pumping (come on, that's just going to waste ammo). Also I wish more mods changed armor/health bonus items to not count for the total tally because THAT... Oh boy, THAT is what ruins my life the most about things. The need to collect every single one of those itty bitty items to see all the counters at 100%. -
What's your generally preferred monster count for a map?
Marisa the Magician replied to NaturalTvventy's topic in Doom General
Depends on the size of the room that contains them. I generally prefer to be able to move around them. -
It's very likely that they just have a very sturdy (and not very flexible) exoskeleton. Same with cyberdemons, really.

What has kept us from creating a true HD remaster of the original games?
Marisa the Magician replied to Koko Ricky's topic in Doom General
What has kept us from creating a TRUE hd remaster? I'd say the other currently-existing hd remasters. They're shining examples of just how slapping "HD" on everything simply does not work at all for a game like this. You'd have to do a remake, rather than a remaster, because there are inherent limits in the engine and gameplay that will not work in favor of more modern graphics at all. -

Come on, I'm not THAT big of a Touhou fan. I haven't even played all of the games, and those I have, I beat on EZ MODO. -
Rather old picture, but I'm proud of it. Might try to snap a nicer shot of a purple sunset with my current phone when I get the chance.

My opinion on this is divided because, while Doom 1 seems to have some of the more neatly designed maps, it does lack the SSG which is honestly a game-changer (good grief, having to fight barons with the standard shotgun...), but it also lacks some of the more obnoxious enemies like the pain elemental. Doom 2 on the other hand does have the SSG, and a very nice expansion of the enemy roster, but some of the maps are really forgettable and come off as filler. There's this saying that I've come across in some circles and it's that Doom 2 stops being fun after MAP08. Considering what The Pit is like (lol more like the ARMPIT, because it stinks), I guess so. Also can probably be blamed on it being one continuous campaign instead of neatly separated, independently playable episodes. You have to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner all at once instead of, you know, eating them throughout the day (what the hell is this analogy I came up with?). Anyway, I'm ranting, so I'll get to the point. This is a VERY hard decision. At the end of the day, I like both for different reasons.

Lost Media Wads or Resources
Marisa the Magician replied to Ganbare-Lucifer's topic in WAD Discussion
This actually does make me wonder if there's people out there who still have my first zdoom mods (as "UBX Master"/"Zanaveth The Corruptor"), the ones I had hosted on filefront back in the day (BAD IDEA). As it turns out, I never really kept backups, so they're pretty much lost forever on my side. -

Why Does It Feel Good To Kill In Video Games?
Marisa the Magician replied to Rudolph's topic in Everything Else
I'm talking about stuff like "shooting an enemy's gut and having their intestines fall out, screaming in pain while panicking and trying to push them back in". You know, things that honestly sound more like snuff film material.
