  1. I'd like to think that in 20 years time there will be technology that allows the blind to play video games... and that Doom would be the first game to showcase such technology :p

It Runs Doom - yay or nay?

@CapnClever Thanks for the links! I found a few of these but not all so I best get reading :) I guess it is kinda memetic... (i've only just started reading academic writings on memes - yes they exist and this is part of my degree lol and no i don't know what i'm gonna do in life xD ... a meme scholar?)
  3. I came across the original video for the first time yesterday. There's a great research paper titled A Brief Summary of DOOM-style Rendering by Forsman & Kreimeier from 1996 that I came across on Google Scholar. I haven't got the link but I would suggest to read it if you can find it. *EDIT* more like just a piece of academic work than a piece of research

It Runs Doom - yay or nay?

smart glasses... like spectacles??? That would be cool. I also wonder, how many people have joined Doomworld and got into modding as a result of It Runs Doom being a highly visible meme thats attracted lots of outsider attention...

It Runs Doom - yay or nay?

It Runs Doom - a silly fad that exploits the capabilities of Doom for the purposes of entertainment or a great way to show mainstream media the flexibility of the Doom engine? I haven't found a great deal of discussions about this on here so I was wondering what your thoughts were.

Why do people still mod Doom?

There's so much research on the motivations of users modding games and a lot of it concludes that people make mods because they want to get into the games industry. I think this literature is becoming a bit dated and I believe there's more to it when you look at communities that have been running for a long period of time. It's more of a community-based venture.Which is why it relates so much to the FOSS movement.

Why do people still mod Doom?

I think @fraggle's post about Doom being the sweet spot between Wolf3D & Quake provides a really good explanation.

Why do people still mod Doom?

There's something remarkable about a community still modding a game 23 years after its initial release. There are so many mods for Skyrim now and it feels almost over-saturated with small add-ons that are nothing but superficial changes that don't even come close to pushing the boundaries. Of course its much harder to do with more recent games due to how advanced they are. Expectations is a very interesting point. Thanks for highlighting this for me :)

Why do people still mod Doom?

Hey folks, I know that a few of you mentioned that your imagination is the only limit when it comes to modding Doom. Would you say that there are limitations when it comes to modding other games?

Why do people still mod Doom?

Yeah, so if you view your own profile you can see your own 'about me' tab but its not visible to others...

Why do people still mod Doom?

Seems like you can write your own 'about me' and save it and view it but the tab isn't visible when you visit other profiles?

I'll just copy and paste it straight into the original post :)

Thank you all for your responses to this post so far. It is very clear that the Doomworld community is truly remarkable and I hope to stick around beyond my research. If I choose to use any of your comments I will contact you directly to let you know. You will be kept anonymous (unless you'd like to be cited otherwise) and of course, if you do not wish for me to use your comment you can let me know. If at any time you'd like to cease your involvement in my study then please contact me (my email is on my profile). My final draft is due on the 7th of April and the deadline is the 21st of April so I have a lot of work to do but ultimately, this has been a very enjoyable experience. I have also been given a conditional offer to study Design & Digital Media at masters level so I can't wait to start doing more practical work. Modding is something I'd like to get into and Doomworld seems like the best place to be for it.

Apologies for not already highlighting that information on my research can be found in my 'about me'. I have edited my post to reflect this. All comments collected will be kept anonymous - whether obtained through participation or observation. But yes, my research, methodology and handling of data have all been approved by my university's ethics board. Let me know if you have anything else you want to discuss. You can view my profile to find my email.

Why do people still mod Doom?

Doom means a lot to me, being the first PC game I ever played through. It is remarkable that a game that's over 23 years old still resonates with gamers and users continue to create mods to this day. If you yourself make mods for Doom, please let me know what your main motivation is, or what got you into modding Doom in the first place. Also, let me know how long you've been modding Doom for. I'd be particularly interested to see how many of you were modding in the 90's or early 00's and are still producing content today. Feel free to showcase anything you've created or are currently working on! Cheers
