My avatar is usually of the main character of a game I made like seven years ago. The game sprite currently shown is just as old!
You made a game? That's cool! Is it available for download somewhere?

It was about Xyzzy going back home after visiting a faraway land (he travelled on foot), but all kinds of natural disasters stir up on his journey. He would have to somehow get past a whirlwind flinging tons of garbage and whatnot through the streets and trudge through a hailstorm for example.
-
Yep! Although I don't remember if it actually had any platforms :)

Unreal is my favorite early-to-mid 90's 3D FPS for the journey it takes you on
I really like you now :P
(Don't take that the wrong way)

- Moron.
- Did you just call me a mormon?
- What? Why would I call you a mormon?
- Do you have something against mormons?
- No.
- Then why are we having this conversation?

"You are only allowed to give 25 likes per day"
I think I need to calm down a little bit.

WARNING: Rant about me being pissed off below.
I hate when games punish you for failing a level. I like challenges and -if the failure is my fault- I have no issue with replaying something over and over until I manage to do it, but if failure means that besides having to replay a section I also have an extra punishment, then it's just stupid.
Case in point: NFS Porsche Unleashed. To enter an event, you have to pay an entry fee. Fair enough. The thing is, if you fuck up during the race, you need to pay AGAIN to retry. Oh, and if you damage your car you also have to pay for the repairs (That doesn't really bother me, but in this case the annoyances start adding).
The reason I'm in my room playing games and not outside, driving a car at 150 mph with the cops on my back, is because in games there usually aren't any consequences if you lose, but this isn't the case. Sure, there's a big difference between going to jail -or dying- and losing virtual cash, but still, it pisses me off.
IT PISSES ME OFF

Oh yeah, that thing was cruel. Blew your chance to win a supercar by losing a bonus race? Haha, you suck, you won't get another one.
I used to cheat with savegames because of this - backing them up into another folder and restoring them when losing something important. Didn't really help a whole lot though. Which is why I eventually gave up on the career mode. I liked the factory driver mode though - you can retry any mission for as many times as you like.

Sonic the fucking Hedgehog. The 50 rings entry fee in the first two games to even get access to a special stage during a regular act and then to fail it screwing your chances of getting all chaos emeralds down the line because the special stages are BS. And just everything else in the design department while we're at it.

"The double credits item doubles the credits"... No shit.
Seriously, when did all this "loading screen with really obvious tips" thing start?
-
I've seen old games confused about the resources avaliable on my system before, but this is a whole new level.
-
The other day I saw an archway and I thought "Wow, that sure has a lot of polygons!". Thankfully it just affected me for like half a second before I realized that stuff in real life is not, in fact, made out of polygons.
I also saw some decorations in an "S" formation on a floor, and it made me wonder how many linedefs it had. Oh, and during a morning with a lot of fog I thought "The draw distance here sucks!".
Don't ever give me a gun. My brain is so confused that I'd probably end up shooting someone during Halloween.
-
Yeah, I'm not doing that :D
As I said, these things happen for like half a second, and I'm not going to go see a psychiatric just because of a bit of insanity that isn't affecting me at any important level.
QuoteDon't ever give me a gun. My brain is so confused that I'd probably end up shooting someone during Halloween.
I was just kidding here, though.

A few months ago I decided to make a crosshair for GZDoom since I didn't like the ones that were included. The idea was to make a small white circle with a bit of translucency, so I made a 4x4 square and then I took away the corners, which worked well enough:
However, I could see that it wasn't an actual circle due to the dpi of my monitor, which started to piss me off, so I gave myself a moment to think about a solution... and it came to me!
I suddenly remembered how anti-aliasing works, so I opened the file and re-added the corners that I removed, but with more translucency:
And what do you know, it looks like a circle now!

After years of playing Doom, for the first time I'm noticing a few interesting things in the levels.
The brown walls on the outside areas of Doom Episode 1 are actually the walls of probably a crater in Phobos, those white pillars in E2M7 are actually the spawning vats the map name is referring to, and those rooms full of nukage in MAP10 are actually fuel tanks.
This might sound really obvious to some, but I'm from the generation where 3D was already a thing, so Doom's architecture really forces me to use some imagination. It's quite interesting nonetheless.

@TootsyBowl The hallway with the Invulnerability Sphere. There are some "pillars" with the UAC logo in them.

Don't read the rest of this status update.
Seriously.
What were you expecting?
I'm really sorry. I don't have a life to spend my time on.

What I was expecting was:
*Nee-ner nee-nee-ner MADE YOU LOOK!* :p
-
Every time I look at this notebook I'm reminded of you :P
-
That's neat, but I think it might be a tad more appropriate if it was a golden eagle, or a true eagle at that.
Notice the "Haliaeetus leucocephalus" in the bottom left. Haliaeetus is a genus of sea eagles, as opposed to the genus of true eagles Aquila.
That said, it's appropriate still, given that I'm an American.
Nice find.
-
You sure know about eagles! :)

Hey, could you help me understand a sentence?
I earned a cup in my school as a prize for basically being good at English (we talk Spanish here) and there's a sentence printed on it which, ironically, I don't quite understand.
It says "Life goes round". From the little I get I think it is a little philosophical... I guess...?

Also a native speaker here, and I'm not quite sure of its context here!
If I heard it outside of that context, I'd take it to basically mean "life always keeps going" or "life goes on".
No idea what it means on the side of a cup to celebrate achievement in English! Unless... could it be the school's motto? Many schools have mottos, like little sayings. In the UK, they're often in Latin. For example, Cambridge University's is "Hinc lucem et pocula sacra" or "From here, light and sacred draughts".
-
@Bauul I don't think the context really matters here. The school doesn't have a motto and other students got cups with other sentences in English, which are actually much more cliche, like "Today is going to be awesome".
They probably just found these cups with random messages and bought them as prizes :P
-
I've never heard this expression before.. Sounds like a goofed up mix of "Life goes on" and "what goes around comes around". I think your explanation is the most likely, maybe these particular cups were less expensive or something, lol

How do you call someone that makes the storyline for a comic book (or anything else that isn't a film)? Google Translate throws screenwriter and scriptwriter, but those refer to films only, don't they?
I'm trying to translate something and I'm stumped with this.

I decided to Install Windows 7 in my Win 8 laptop, with almost no experience in the matter.
I'm currently in driver hell, but hopefully I'll find what I need.

I didn't know you could have less than 0 reputation points...
How can you lose points, anyways? Through reports?

I don't have a computer anymore, and I won't have a new one until november-december.
Which means I'll be stuck playing Android games.
I'm worried about my sanity in the next months...

If by any chance you want a change of pace, try Trivia Crack for Android, a q/a game, it's really fun and it's free.
(no I'm not getting payed to say this)

I hate touchscreen controls, but trust me and others here: D-Touch will help you retain your sanity. Just get used to ITYTD mode ;D

I found this in an old post in the "Things about Doom you just found out" thread:
QuoteThe Ultimate Doom has 36 levels...
1+2+3...+34+35+36 = 666.
Coincidence?That's awesome haha.

I googled my name just to realize that it's the name of a community for helping parents to rise their children, or something among those lines. And apparently it's the name of a plant as well.
I... um... why didn't I know about this before?! I feel awkward now...

And then KVELLER was a plant.

Don't feel bad...I Googled my name too.Couldn't find myself, but found a shitload of ppl withe the same name as me.Be proud of yourself no matter what.

I got fucked once again for giving too many likes, but at least I learned something.
Doomworld doesn't give two shits about local time, and has an internal clock of sorts... Why didn't I think about that, anyways?
-
Uh, apparently the "25 likes per day" works a bit differently. I always run into the limit although I give maybe 10 likes per day. It seems to work more like "25 likes per 24 hours".
So if you give a like today at 12 AM, then for the rest of the day you give another 24x, on the next day at 12 AM you'll have only 1 like.
I think it works like that.
-
@bzzrak Well that's confusing... I wonder why they decided to design it that way (supposing you're actually right).
-
That's the magic of IPB, one of the worst forum software out there. But it's the biggest, so mostly everyone uses it. Just like Windows... And we all know Windows works by some kind of wizardry.

I had been working on a Doom map for a couple months (although the instances where I actually worked were few and far between) in a computer in my school. One day I decided to put in in a USB drive so I could continue working on it in my home, but instead of copying it to my laptop immediately, I left it there for a while.
Recently I remembered that it was there, and when I started looking for my USB drive, I couldn't find it. It had been stolen (I know who it was and why but it's a topic I'm not interested in talking about). Also, I'm so smart that I didn't keep a copy in the computer I was using in school.
I never had any motivation for mapping, but now, when I finally started creating something and gathered a bunch of ideas, everything goes to hell.
Call it fate or just plain bad luck, but I guess I'm starting from scratch. Sigh... What I had probably sucked, anyways... -
I hate when games give you stars based on your performance.
In game without them, you usually get a sense of satisfaction at the end of a level, but in this case, if you don't get all stars it's something like "You can continue, but you're still a piece of shit".
That's... how I feel, at least.

@Albertoni I usually don't, and I feel a bit bad if I can't find all the secrets, but I found a workaround for that.
If I can't find all the secrets and items, and I succeed anyways, I just say it means I'm so badass that I don't need them lol.
And not getting 100% kills isn't a common thing for me. If I can see it, it will die, even if I have to kill it with my bare hands (unless it's a Cyberdemon, fuck that).
-
@Albertoni I wonder if an ACS star based completion system for intermissions would be possible?
-
@Nevander Nope. Definitely nope.
Unless you want to rewrite the whole intermission thing into ACS or ZScript, then teleport the player across maps. You could make that look pretty much equal to the original game, really. But the original level ending screens have no support for that.
-
I hate when I see stuff like this in my subscriptions tab...

I think the problem with recommendations is just that if you watch a SINGLE video of a certain category, you recommendations will be flooded with them.

I just finshed Back to Saturn Ex Episode 1.
When I read that it was a vanilla mapset, I had low expectations since (thanks to my ignorance) I was just expecting something with a '94 style. Damn, I'm glad I was wrong.
I don't recall having so much fun with a vanilla MegaWAD ever before!
And the color palette changes are really cool!
And the textures are great!
And the music is really well done!
And the ending!!! It was really clever!
Did I already mention how much I love this? :)
MAP19 can go to hell though. Half of my deaths were from that map alone.
