    I am moving toward completion (hopefully) of my first Doom level ever. I've screwed around with mapping for Doom before, never got past a room or two. Well this time I stuck with it for a little while and shit out this little level. It does not I think suck like some 'first' levels do, believe me. I'd like feedback on the difficulty (although I notice it is too easy right now on hard, maybe medium too), texturing, general gameplay.     A new version is up with altered red key area, hopefully improved difficulty, and some new additions that kind of force the player into some areas (like the outdoor area). Be sure to try UV and HMP :)

    Nice one, i thought i fixed that trick by puttuing the little angled posts there, I'll probably move the switch back another 8-16 units. Thanks for catching that one though :) the armor wall you found in the beginning was a secret, but it won't trigger till you step a bit more into the alcove. I'll find a way to fix that.

    Ok first, thanks for the great feedback. Noted, the difficulty IS low isn't it. I will work on that then. Marius, sure I'd love a demo feel free to mail it to roz1281 AT yahoo DOT com. I use PRboom and zdoom , so zdoom or doom2.exe/prboom would be fine for a demo. Marius, glad to hear UV is better, The first secret is in the first hallway past that first shotgun zombie where you start. There's a lightly shaded arrow on the floor pointing to it on the right wall, but the zombie often dies right on the arrow making it impossible to see :( Second secret is in one of the outdoor chaingunner nests. Grazza you're right that redkeyh section is repetitive, i was thinking that as i made it. Probably change it up a bit, we'll see what i can cook up then. I'm going to watch the demo. thanks.

    prboom Issues Thread

    Thanks, I'll try calibrating in in windows first then enabling it in the game. My pad's buttons are labeled with numbers, but i tried setting those numbers first in the config, that didn't work. So I'll try your method and pray. Thanks alot.

    prboom Issues Thread

    In PRBoom, latest version, How do I use a joystick, I 'enabled' it in PRBoom, but can't simply map the controls through the menu. It's windows XP Home, logitech dual action USB, tried it in both USB ports. The docs say something about the keycodes are the codes as reported by the kernal/drivers but while I vaguely understand this I don't know how to get windows to spit those codes at me so I can use them! ANy help? Because I'm sick of ZDoom and it's coop bugs and my girlfriend won't use a mouse/kb and needs a pad. Also, are there any ports that don't have something majorly wrong with them? I mean I just want a simple classic doom with no updated graphics (except 640x480 res+), no altered gameplay, no altered settings etc. PRBoom is cool cept the controller thing, zdoom owns but I like PRboom's feel and compat modes better. I wish id would update doom95 and make the mouse work with XP , that's all I'd need :)

    How to replace/add monsters?

    I know someone who could probably make some badass enemy sprites, but I'm a clueless douche who knows nothing about sprite editing. So I ask of you hte following: 1. How Do I extract the sprites? I have XWE if that'd do the trick. 2. Do I replace current monster's frames, or can I add new ones? (Compatible with doom2.exe preferably). 3. Do I have to replace ALL of a monster's frames, or would less/more BE OK? 4. I forgot my last question again.

    I thought so! But It'd be stupid for me to assume and not ask before I get started ;) Thanks. But if I made a pwad that contained sprites in the same name as say the imp's frames, would I need DEUSF (which I've used a couple times on downloaded wads)? No I assume, since I've played pwads that replaced guns, monsters etc. Anway, thanks for the good posts & help. I'm nearing the finish of my first map (I've attempted editing in the past only to get 'mappers' block and not be able to think of anything past two rooms) and looking to learn more about Doom editing.

    And take all the time you need, DB kicks much arse. I'd sooner 'register' DB if it were shareare than Wauthour which I used to use.

    ??? That won't happen if you draw 'across' the sector first. If I were to draw from D -> A first then it would fuck up the sector. --------------------------------- All in all though an auto-door from sector feature would be nothing to complain about. And I'd add it if i knew an ounce of programming.

    1. In my map, monster's will hear gunfire across the level and open all doors, rushing the player at the start. I realize making them deaf helps, but is there another way, so that they hear when you walk into their room/vicinity, as deafness can cause problems when a monster doesn't see you as intended. 2. Secrets. How do I properly give credit to a player for stumbling upon a secret area? I tried (in Doom Builder) going to the properties of a linedef that the player walks over and checking off 'Secret' but that doesn't seem to help. 3. I can't think of the 3rd question right now... I'll edit it in later :p

    Awesome. Didm't even look in sector specials for the secret thing :p I just saw it in line properties and thought that was it. Thank's. An easy way is to "lock" the monsters in their starting rooms, by klicking the "Block Monster" attribute to every line that monsters could possibly pass (e.g. in front of the doors). This way, monsters will roam in just one room, instead of rushing up to you as soon as you fire your gun. That's a good idea, and it'll work for some sections of my level. Due to the nature of my map though, probably not much since I'd like the monsters to give chase if the player retreats. I did experiment with the block sound flag but it didn't SEEM to work. Should I tag all lines in the room or just openings to other sectors? The "Secret" attribute of a LINE means, that the line looks solid on the player`s map, despite of it being a door or window. Thanks I was wondering how to do that!

    You could always make the door counter-clockwise, then the linedefs are facing out, that takes care of that part.

    Lineup for the New england Metal fest this year was just announced. Suffocation will be there, I hope they kick as much ass as they did at the release of their (thought to be) final CD. I know there's a pile of metalheads in these forums. So who's going? EDIT: Shit I just realized this probably doesn't belong in this forum, but I don't see a general type forum anywhere.

    TBH i don't remember much of last years lineup, I didn't go. But it's a mix of hardcore/grind/death really any metal. Cradle of Filth was going but backed out. Also it's the only major 'fest' i know of that happens yearly around here. The other one would be Milwaukee metal fest

    Yea I guess saying "east coast" was stupid, but :P. I'm afraid to see the place, I went to see Slayer/Soulfly a couple months ago and it seemed the whole City was lined up to get inside. This is gonna be nuts!
