seeking technical explanation about steam unity updates

    Good to know, thanks!
  2. So I decided to try and give the updated ports another chance after seeing some videos of it. My opinion has risen a bit. If I was coming back to Doom from the old days and bought this for $5, I'd be pleased with the sensible updates that still keep the vanilla essence, and especially pleased with the music quality and split-screen MP (which I can't wait to try with a controller) As per topic, I'd like to learn why my mouse sensitivity is tied to the frame rate cap setting. For example, when I have the rate capped at 30 or 60, my mouse is hyper sensitive (to the point where I have to lower it to 200 CPI in mouse settings). Capped at 120 it's playable, and at 144 it reaches what I feel is average as compared to all my other games with their mouse sliders in the middle. At 240, the mouse sens slows way down and I have to raise it in-game. This is with VSYNC turned off or on, windowed or not. Is this behavior part of the original code or is the Unity wrapper stepping in and causing this? I'm also curious if this applies to everyone or if it's something with my system. My mouse is a steelseries rival 3 set at 800cpi normally, updated drivers. Windows mouse settings are neutral with no acceleration, though @sponge pointed out that the game is using raw input and this should not matter, and that if my mouse had super high DPI, the slider may not help. I'd also like to take this opportunity to apologize (to sponge) for blanket-stating that developers don't "get it" in another thread. I can become an 'armchair quarterback' sometimes and feel confused at design that doesn't line up with my ideal, while I lack knowledge on the inner workings. I should load up my old quake III and test the raw input with this mouse (I think there was a raw input option via console) 60hz monitor (though I usually like Doom at 35fps). Thanks to anyone who can share their knowledge on this subject.

Had some catching up to do. As you can see I got lost for a while in map19 :). The music got on my nerves in that map, but it was fun. Map17 - the caco fight smashed me a few times before I prevailed. Cool map. Map18 - This one had a unique style with the sky making me feel like I was in a computer. It was very interesting in it's design but I became annoyed with all the up and down and looking for the exit. Enjoyed the Cyber fight though! It was a good map, just not for me overall. And the music was probably my least favorite track so far in the wad, but it kinda fit the strange atmosphere of the level.

    Crispy Doom 6.0 (Update: Mar 31, 2023)

So I'm trying to make a DVD with loads of megawads and Crispy Doom, playable from the disc. Works fine with -cdrom as it should, and saves the data at c:\doomdata. How can I get the setup exe to do the same as the game though? So I can start fresh off the DVD, and have setup save in c:\doomdata. I used to use zdoom for this purpose and I would have a convoluted batch file that copies my standard config over if it doesn't exist already, or use what's there if something exists. I was hoping to make it simpler this time and start like it's a fresh crispy install (since it is!).

Wow.. one of the best urban environments i've seen in Doom! Best music track so far in this wad!

I really enjoyed map14. I groaned when I saw another Cyberdemon, but it turned out to be easy to fight him and his buddy later on. Cool mountains and good contrast with all the brown stone. The vanilla music track fit well, and was well suited to a long map (long for me anyway) as I don't tire of this track as quickly as most of the upbeat faster paced ones.

Map12 was the most scared I've ever been playing Doom. You bet your ass I went back and killed those cybers after I unlocked the BFG. Map13 was interesting... It was kinda cathartic mowing down imps (after I remembered that I had a full BFG and stopped chipping away at them with the shotgun). I ran like hell once I saw that exit though. I've had enough of cyberdemons for now.

Map10 - Enjoyed this map. At first it seemed overwhelming, like it all looks the same, how am I going to keep track of where switches are etc? But it ended up flowing great. Not my favorite so far, but decent. Thought the morning theme was neat. Map11 - This is the type of slaughter map I can tolerate: Short! Let the caco's and imps resolve their differences then cleanup the leftovers. In the second fight I just killed the cyber before waking the revenents. I died a few times on the big baron/cyber room, but prevailed in the end. I don't think this was a bad map, but I'm starting to worry about the number of cybers in this wad, especially after loading into map12 and seeing a pair of cyberdemons in cages...

Tell me about it; I've relied on bigmacdavis on youtube for getting me through the iwad maps for years.

I had to watch guitardz video to see where the blue key was. For some reason I never turned that corner and saw it even though I ran around for many minutes searching. I loved the revenant wall at the end, it was like a contra boss fight. You can keep your stinking secrets.

Question About The Purist Way To Play DOOM

I know there's been a ton of replies, but I'm casting my vote for Crispy Doom as well. It's capable of being as vanilla as you want. I'd run the crispy-doom-setup.exe, then load the game and hit the crispness menu, then turn off all the crispy options. From there, see what you feel needs changing. You can up the resolution, framerate, and much more. I'd probably be using Chocolate Doom but I have volume issues with that so I went crispy. No regrets. Also recommend reading up on the music capabilities as there are tons of options for how you hear your midi music. I'd change the music to midi in the setup program as it sounds better than the default in my opinion. Crispy supports music packs and there are some mp3/ogg/flac files out there that were recorded on the synth that the music was originally composed on. That's pretty pure right there. But it can get overwhelming when you start messing with all the various addons and options. For myself, I run crispy doom and a side installation of gzdoom for when a map requires a port.

Map07 frustrated me at first because I didn't realize I could ride a lift up in a certain area (there was even a sign pointing up). After i found that It was OK. I'm not a fan of hit-the-switch-and-run to the open door gameplay and this map over did it a little. Map08 I loved. The Blue water/sky and green colors are one of my favorite combos. This map had a cool theme and I liked the monster count and vanilla-difficulty combat. You keep giving me maps with no secrets and I'll keep 100%'ing them!

Five years on, still searching for this wad. Wish I could remember more.

Wow, map06 blew me away with it's atmosphere and theme. It almost felt like I was in a different game. Like some kind of first-person castlevania. It had 'realistic' structures like a well and church furniture that didn't look awful. The trees, even though super simple, were very effective in transporting me into the world. I'd love to see more in this style. I was happy it wasn't a monster-packed slaughter fest; it helped sell the moody theme.

Map05 was decent. It seems like a step up in the aesthetics department. I liked the combat too. I accidentally fell into the exit fighting the last monsters so I reloaded to see if I could find secrets. I could not.
  16. Yea, sometimes I just expect developers to align with my preferences, which is unfair :). I have noticed recently I am becoming increasingly stuck on old games and frustrated with newer things. I can still appreciate that these things have quality and an audience, it just may not be me.
  17. Ok messing around a couple minutes... Framerate setting determines my sensitivity. It's unplayable at 30fps, still fast at 60, and feels relatively normal at 120. Still feel a lot of input lag with the keyboard, though it's almost decent at 120fps. Even the menu's responsiveness feels sluggish at 30/60. I thought things being tied to framerate like this was a thing of the past? No new game option from the escape menu? I'm going to shut up and stop playing this port now. For as much as it baffles me with some of the decisions, it's probably good for the community and hopefully brings some more folks into the fold.
  18. @sponge My mouse is set at 800CPI. It's confusing why beth would go out of their way to make a modern port and not consider high dpi mice (mine's not even that high). I hate to complain since it's free and left us the old version, but it irks me when developers just don't seem to 'get it'. Like requiring us to sign in to download wads.. :p Thanks for the tip though. So I guess I could lower the cpi in my software and should be good to go. @UndeadRyker Thanks, I will try that. I tried with VSync off at first, so I'll try with it on. Can't see myself playing with it on. All in all, I still have superior ports but I wanted to mess around with this gift we were given.
  19. Any way to make the mouse work? it's hyper sensitive even at the minimum setting. My windows settings are set a neutral. In the new port I mean. Something akin to the "no prescale" options in other ports?

Took a while to find that secret. This map riffs on one of my favorite Doom II levels, so I enjoyed it. Thought it was well done and it reminded me of some kind of lost Zone 300 map. That's high praise since that's one of my favorite megawads off all-time.

Wow, where are all the secrets in this wad :D. I'm 3/3 so far. Didn't enjoy this map too much. It was cute but kinda flat like wolfenstein, as someone said previously. The rev room was overkill compared to the rest of the monster density. I liked the microwave sprite. Finally noticed the shotgun sprite this time.

This seems amazing. I played two maps but I had to quit since the sounds are so jarring.

HMP Continuous. I liked this map a little less than 01. Still decent though. Revenant beat me up a bit after that elevator!

Ohh. No I wasn't paying attention I guess. I thought you meant a new first person sprite. I'll have to check it out :D.
