  1. I've been messing around with Heretic mapping a whole lot lately and despite the small selection of textures, there's a certain charm to it. I made a lot of progress on that Doom map I mentioned a couple weeks back but I'm taking a small break to see what I can get out of this.

Still needs a bit of work as far as texture alignment goes but I thought it looked kind of pretty anyway.

The selection of textures i small but that doesn't mean that you can't use texture packs =]

If you want more textures, get Baker's Legacy from Realm667. Also, yay Heretic maps!

Baker's Legacy is great but there are A LOT of textures in it,Medieval has a lot less but its still very good :)

No shoot to lower in vanilla? What's action 24 then??

^ Shoot to raise floor ;p

I love Boom format and it's my preferred format to map for, but part of the fun of working with limitations is having to work within them; there may not be a shoot to lower floor action, but you could have still used the shoot to raise floor or shoot to open door actions to do something, like reveal a switch or path with a walk-over trigger which would do the intended effect. Working with limitations = finding work-arounds and part of the fun of mapping is making areas which loosely abide by your vague vision, rather than beating your head against the wall trying to make something exactly as you clearly see it. We also tend to picture areas for their aesthetics rather than for their gameplay, which is a fundamental mistake all too easy to make. Gotta take the good with the bad and accepts a work's faults as merely different flavors :) at least for those faults past the basics. As with any creative endeavor, learn the foundation then where you take your art from there is your style.

      ^ for me it's "shoot to insta-lower floor" ;]

  4. As it turns out, I'm so much more productive when I set self-imposed time limits for myself while mapping. It stops me from reworking the same room over and over again. Everything comes together at a faster pace so I don't get bored or lose motivation. Too much time to think and I start being critical of what I have up to that point, this is so much easier and a whole lot more enjoyable. Wish I would have thought of trying this sooner.

Aside of being a WAD I would consider a must-play, the set basically started off with the idea of having limited time to build each map. With that in mind, SoD is a good set too show what can be done in a set amount of time with some practice.

Back when the Doomworld Megawad club played SoD, Joshy told us that his Co-mapper basically started mapping for this project in the sense that it contains Darkwave0000's first ever maps.

For sure, it's really impressive given the limitations they worked under. I'm up to MAP04 (I think?) and I adore it so far. I love how straight forward the maps have been and they look quite nice to boot. I get totally burnt out on some of the more complex megawads out there so something like this is right down my alley.

That's really something! Never would have guessed.

  5. I really love this community. Everyone has been so kind and welcoming since I joined last month. It makes me feel so included. Such nice people.

  6. More progress on my first map ✨

Haven't scrapped it yet by some miracle. I still have a lot to work out but here's some of what I have down so far (posted the first image a couple weeks back but I'm posting it again for the sake of completion)

Still a major work in progress, a lot is bound to change before I'm finished here. I've learned a hell of a lot since I started this just by aimlessly messing around with Doom Builder. It's far from professional grade stuff obviously but I'm quite happy with it as a first project.

...Until the perfectionist in me finds something else that needs fixing, that is ):

That looks as good as my current maps, heh.

  7. Is there a single, centralized Doom Discord out there somewhere? The ones I've seen have been for specific topics (multiplayer, mapping) or source ports. I was hoping there would be a general server that isn't broken up like that. I'd love to get to know more of the people here and Discord seems like a really nice way of doing it.

the Doom community is kind of big. if it'd be for all, general purpose Doom talk, i'd think it would get out of hand very quickly if word spreads around. not all communities have gone along perfectly with each other, and even something as simple as source-port preference, playing vanilla or modded, even the types of maps you like to play have had very decisive lines being drawn that if you were to cross, you'd be told by some people how wrong or shit the way you're playing the game is.

if you were to try and moderate something like this, it'd probably be hell to do. i've had moderators and admins jump out left and right in a Discord group because they can't handle it or don't want to deal with stupid people's shit anymore. and that's a very niche group of interest, too. i'm pretty sure a mega Doom Discord would fall victim to the same fate.

Doomkid, IRC is pretty great too. Guess that's always another option if this never becomes a thing lol.

Memfis, yeah now that I think about it I don't think it'd be much trouble to maintain as long as the amount of people is still kinda limited. I don't know exactly how much interest there even is in something like this so it might not ever be an issue anyway.

Viscra, I totally get where you're coming from. I imagine it would be a real pain in the ass to manage if it were to ever reach that many people but with a tight grip on who's who, it would at least be somewhat easier to control. I still find it hard to believe people treat things like that so seriously though. 🤔 Haha source ports, mods, things like that. I mean, I believe it but it all seems so senseless to me. But yeah, I'm a long time lurker but still fairly new to the Doom community itself so I have no idea what kinda characters a server like that would attract and for that reason (among others), I don't think it would get very far at all if I were to make it. It's always worth a shot I suppose but it would turn out better if someone more experienced were to take it on, I think. Here's hoping someone else down the road decides to take a crack at it. 🤞

  8. OBS has been giving me so much trouble. Tried recording some Doom footage and playback is always choppy as hell, to the point of being almost unwatchable. I could never figure out why either. Any idea what might be causing it? Everyone I've spoken to about this never had these kinds of issues. Maybe I should just try reinstalling it? Beats me.

Sadly, other recorders such as Fraps, D3DGear and Bandicam are trial or not free unless you crack them.

Glad to be of help! :-)

If you're interested in other recorders/encoders, I'd stick with open-source options (they are always free, and usually satisfactory). The other one that I've used is ffmpeg -- it is made for Linux and is cmd interface only, but also runs on Windows and has several graphical front-end options (e.g. Vokoscreen. I don't know which GUIs run on Windows, however... I use Linux almost exclusively).

I'll definitely look into that as well! Thank you so much! OBS still bogs down my pc quite a bit so that sounds like a great alternative if this doesn't go as planned.

  9. Is there any interest in a total playthrough of the mind-numbing Maximum Doom with commentary? I've been bored out of my mind and I find shovelware collections downright interesting. I've been looking for something to start my channel off with and as far as I can tell, nobody has really done this before. At least never recorded it.

Would this be pointless or something you'd like to see? It'll be spread over a bunch of videos ofc, maybe 10 wads each or so.

Haha now wouldn't that be something. Maximum Doom 2.0, AKA Maximum Doom but actually half decent.

    3. Doomkid

      Doomkid

I see a lot more potential for entertainment in playing crappy maps, so long as the commentary isn't deliberately exaggerated "for the lols" because ironically that can make a funny thing not funny. I meantion this because I've seen people do it with bad games/mods/etc on Youtube over the years. If you just play through them and give your genuine reactions and opinions, that could be quite entertaining!

    4. MarsHappyNation

      MarsHappyNation

Thanks for the input! If I do go through with it, I certainly won't be hyping up the reactions or anything ahaha I get exactly where you're coming from. It'll be completely genuine. I think part of the fun of Maximum Doom is the sense of discovery that comes with playing through huge, random collections of wads. No telling what you might find and who knows how many of those haven't gotten played since they were released. I was really hoping that would carry over into the actual videos and make for something you can kinda just kick back and take in.

  10. Just now discovering the horrors of lighting and texturing and I gotta say, they're both a royal pain. Really hard to strike a balance between consistency and presenting enough of a difference to keep things from looking repetitive.

    incinerator_hall.png

Lots of textures still need to be properly aligned and I still have to add other little details to make it look more interesting but I'm actually really satisfied with how this is turning out. Looks a hell of a lot better than I was expecting it to at least, so that's a win in my book.

  11. After roughly two years of messing around with Doom Builder and nothing ever coming out of it, I've finally made a good amount of progress on a map without scrapping it and starting all over again. Really happy about that. Might actually finish it for once.

It'll be my first completed map so obviously it won't be super high quality or anything but at least it's something. Will probably post screenshots later on when I get a bit more done. I forgot how much fun this was.
