My router's busted, so no WiFi until Friday. Fun.
In other news, SgtMkIV is, in his own indirect words, shitting bricks over Bethesda having problems with his mod patreon.

I beat Serious Sam: the Second Encounter today.
It was tiring, to say the least.

I found The Second Encounter to be more interesting (initially) than The First Encounter's setting, and that it was going to be harder, but I thought the rest of it was easier than The First Encounter. On Normal difficulty anyway. I aspire to go back through these on Serious difficulty though, because I'm a masochist and I want to get the 'full Serious Sam experience'.
-
I beat FE on a less-than-normal skill rather easily. I chose it because I remembered playing SS badly, especially SE. Since it was so easy this time, I chose normal for SE and it kicked my ass a lot. I doubt FE would be as hard.
In regards to setting, I feel like SE was a bit of a cop-out. You're made to think it's gonna be about forests and hills and 3D grass, which was novel compared to FE, but after just two levels it's back to generic temples again, except more colorful and with a flat grass texture instead of sand.
Also lots of traps.
But it was pretty and somewhat varied regardless.

The sniper rifle and flamethrower and the new power ups added in TSE like serious damage for instance are really helpful. TSE is also more about gimmicky stuff like strange rooms and puzzle elements than huge battles like TFE.
I also really liked the Aztec chapter the most, and thought that was gonna be TSE's theme. Didn't care for Persia or medieval Poland as much.

You are locked in a room with D_RUNNIN playing through a speaker in the ceiling. There is no visible way out and no apparent way to shut the speaker off. How long can you stand it?

When I was coding ZDoomWars I'd noclip to the open area and try stuff over and over for hours and hours and days of refinement and revision. It's a good tune!

Something similar happened for me. I spent countless hours of testing maps while mapping and D_RUNNIN played on the background in all of them, so it is now imprinted in my mind.

I wake up after having a crazy dream about me almost strangling some guy after he makes fun of me all day, and watching Angry Joe talk about some kind of weird hellish game. For some reason he put a jumpscare after a montage of tortured souls and bodies hanging on walls and shit.
I wake up to a thunderstorm and a sore throat. Hooray.

Today I ate figs for the first time. Not bad.

God, I hate monster placement. I always have a somewhat clear idea of the map's architecture (eg. I want this place to be a sewer/runway/office) but when it comes to the monsters it's just "a lot/a couple".

I always place as I map. It becomes part of the design process as opposed to an afterthought / chore. I also retest very, very regularly while mapping to ensure weapon, health & ammo balance is fair. I'd recommend working that way. :)

Brutal Doom has pretty much trained me to always aim for heads, even when I'm not playing Brutal.

Jesus rat pissing Christ on a rusty pogo stick the last 2 levels of Fragport were fucking nightmares.
Map 29:
The final boss spawning monsters everywhere.
Killing the hordes of spawned monsters.
Four Archviles resurrecting the fucking spawned monsters.
All that while going on a switch hunt.
I cheated, yes.
Map 30:
The concept of a map where you had to escape on a timer is cool. But then my framerate started dropping.
And dropping.
And dropping.
By the time I reached the end I was having literally one frame per second. Not even freeze mode could remedy this.
Again, I cheated.
Really shitty end to a really fun playthrough.

-Playing Fragport Map 17
-Fights through the entire maze in pitch black darkness (good thing I have a flashlight)
-Realizes you can turn the lights on after the maze has been mostly cleared

I'm finally a full-scale member!

What, there's no party?

Playing Fragport, so close to reaching Map 31
Except for the damn green secret
I've searched the entire level for 15 minutes and haven't found it

Why do people use instapop monsters? It's the cheapest fucking way to ambush the player.
Especially instapop Archviles. Fuck them.

I agree...magic floors popping monsters in your face is boring and uninspired. It's a cheap way to set up boring and predictable encounters.
-
They're a very space-efficient way to bring monsters to places that are supposed to be (or seem) monster-less before the player reaches them.

Do you come on once a week and go on liking sprees?

There's a 7th grader in my 11th grade physics class.
This is going to be a strange year.
-
I have a horrible sense of scale when mapping. I make a window expecting the player to easily shoot over it, and turns out the player can barely see over it.
-
It takes practice. Design maps with the intention of experimenting, not for actually completing and releasing just to get a feel for what the engine is capable of.
16 or 24 units up from the ground is usually good for windows, but you'll need to use impassable lines or make the ceiling height low enough if you want to keep the player from jumping out of it.
-
It's also worth noting the player's view height is 41 units above ground.

I have a choice between:
1. Earbuds that work perfectly but are bassy as fuck
2. Earphones that work perfectly, but don't fit over your ears and start to hurt them after some time
3. Earphones that are comfortable and sounds great, but only if you twist the jack in a specific way
-
My choices are restricted to:
1. Earbuds that I like, but I don't want to use them at home because overusing them is probably harmful for my hearing.
2. Old-ish cheap headphones with OK bass that hurt my ears after some time, and also have a very short cord.
3. Wireless headphones with good bass that are a PITA to tune properly, and even then a perfectly clear sound is not guaranteed.

Has no one thought of a Barrels o' Fun megawad before?

A megawad that strictly only uses barrels to kill monsters would be an interesting if not challenging to make. With creative thing placement, barrels can pretty much kill almost anything with the exception of Cyberdemons & Spiderdemons because of their high HP.
The reason why Cyberdemons and Spiderdemons can't be killed by barrels is because they're hardcoded to be completely immune to splash damage.
Ghost monsters, on the other hand, can only be killed by certain few things, including barrels and NOT including most of the player's weapons, so they might go perfectly with your idea.

The newest Oblige has some funny ideas.
-1st wad generated, starting weapon provided was the plasma rifle
-2nd wad generated, 6 maps straight with no shotgun or shotgun guys
-Same wad, map that's unwinnable because the button that lowers an obstacle is on the other side of said obstacle

Once, when I was walking through a supermarket, I noticed bags of Licorice Allsorts on sale. Not stuff usually seen in Hong Kong. I've heard of them from Roald Dahl's autobiographies, so I thought, "Eh, I'll try them, they can't be bad," and bought a bag.
They were beyond disgusting. I swear they tasted like a mixture of salt, sugar, and soap. I threw half the bag away after forcing myself to eat the other half.
