    What Video Game Are You Currently Playing?

    Right now, I'm playing Minecraft. I've got a pretty nice cliffside base started, which is really one of the better ways to get started in Survival.
  2. Mine would have to be the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and the end of the Cold War era. I was eight years old at the time.

    Quake II and IV are their own separate universe. No demons or Lovecraftian horrors like the original Quake, but plenty of alien cyborg bastards in what amounts to a grim space war setting.

    What is your most hated demon in Doom?

    My personal hated monsters: 1. Chaingunners: Only good thing about these guys is that they're easily killable with at least a boomstick and give you a free chaingun. But they're by far the worst hitscanners in the game and they are fully capable of ruining a run, especially if you get surprised by a whole mess of them. 2. Revenants: Not fond of heatseekers on a good day, and you're not always given the option of retreating to a safezone or given cover enough to lose one of their fireballs. And getting skelly-punched is anything but fun, especially since it takes two to three super shotgun blasts to end them. 3. Viles: I fucking HATE these things. Not only do I have to constantly take cover whenever one of them starts the fire attack, but one or more of them dropped into a map means most if not all of your hard work gets undone in a hurry due to them rezzing nearly everything in sight. I especially hate them in mods like Complex Doom, where they are fully capable of rezzing up some of the more aggravating enemies. 4. Pain Elementals: Not a fan of Lost Souls on a good day, but being inundated with a whole mess of them because of these pains in the ass is anything but fun.

    Unexplored Themes?

    Definitely thirding this. I've not fought demons in Heaven outside of fare like Diablo III and Eviternity, and I know that DOOM Eternal (which I haven't played yet) has Heaven as a battleground, albeit a more alien space god version of Heaven than the kind you normally associate with things. And as mentioned before, OTEX does have textures that lend themselves to something more celestial than the standard Doom fare. Perhaps you may have to fight angels alongside the more standard monsters from Hell.
  7. You referring to side lengths or to diameter? Because my UDB's ellipse tool gives me diameter, but the length of each sidedef of the ellipse is something I don't know about until after I've created the ellipse itself.
  8. Gotta question for you. Is there any way to create an ellipse with sides that are 128 units long or similar in the Doom Builders, or do I generally have to turn to some other mapping program in order to do this?

    Hoo boy...you'll want a map editor that can go into 3D Mode. Most of us these days use Doom Builder 2, GZDOOM Builder, or Ultimate Doom Builder. All you'll need to do here is lay out your spawn points in Things Mode, and then use the 3D Mode to stack each point on top of the other so the Cacos don't teleport in one at a time. You'll also want to allow for clearance for each Caco, so you'll want to look up the heights for them and position your spawns accordingly. 3D Mode also allows for this, as you can see what the Caco will look like onscreen using the 3D viewer.

    If something like that were to happen, I would need to turn my Fragmentation map into a single-player map with a whole load of extras. It actually wouldn't be a bad idea in general, though GZDOOM is my port of choice these days, and I don't really know how to convert something from regular Doom format to the new format of GZDOOM. I especially want to incorporate the music I put into that first major wad into it.

    By "monster spawners", would you be working with ACS scripting or DECORATE? Because monster spawning (and shutdown of same) can be workable with ACS.

    The first (and only) map I released into the wild was Fragmentation, a small and rather inexpertly-made deathmatch map that I made back in my teenage years. I also ended up creating a map based on my school (this was before Columbine) whose story involved the demons taking over the school and you having to kill them in order to make it safe for students again. I never released the map because it frankly sucked, and looking back, I was wise not to. The parts that I remember from the map were an archvile in one of the gyms that couldn't see me for some reason as well as a Cyberdemon battle in the other gym. I also had two choices of teleporters in order to exit the level, and one of them had its landing right on top of a voodoo doll, and would result in telefragging yourself if you picked the wrong one.

    Ultimate Doom Builder

    OK, what is going on with my toolbars and how do I fix them? This is what my Curve toolbar thing currently looks like. As you can plainly see, the toolbar isn't acting like it's supposed to, and it should be acting more on the order of this from GZDOOM Builder. I don't know what caused this or how I'm supposed to fix it, but it would be nice to be able to use the tools properly again (this is happening with other tools as well).

    How to disable weapons for a map?

    Yep. It's me again. So a few years ago, I asked about how to make actors for dialogue sections essential so that the player couldn't kill them. Then I realized that I was going about things the wrong way. Usually in games that have both dialogue sections and combat sections, the player's weapons get disabled for dialogue sections, and re-enabled for the combat sections. I plan to have a number of maps where the game disables your weapons for the purpose of talking with NPCs, buying items and getting missions, and other maps where the main combat goes down. I want to know how one would be able to pull something like this off in GZDOOM.

    How do you handle damaging floors?

    Nukage and lava are the floors that do damage in my general maps, with lava doing worse damage than nukage and primarily representing either molten metal in bases or lava in Hell maps. Water doesn't do damage unless it's something like polluted/poisonous water (in which case that shit should be marked clearly), electrified water (again, this should be marked clearly), or freezing water (which generally only occurs in very cold-looking maps with custom textures and such). Blood I generally do not make damaging unless it's glowing and clearly toxic.

    Which Doom II enemy is worse than the arch-vile

    I hate chaingunners due to them being hitscanner assholes. Only good thing about them is that the regular shotgun can put them down with minimal fuss so you can grab their chaingun, but you'll want either rockets or a BFG for a whole roomful of them. Revenants are tough to kill with your starter arsenal of pistol and shotgun, punch you into next week if you get too close, and fire heatseekers. A mass of these bonehead bastards in one room can ruin anybody's night, especially if they all launch those damned seekers. I call the Pain Elementals "Pain in the Ass Elementals" with good reason -- not a fan of having to fight those flying skullbastards, especially if I'm trying to take on a mess of other enemies at the same time. I'd much rather fight the Cacos than those things. As for the Viles...fuck them. Last thing you want (other than getting incinerated by their flame attack) is having the fuckers undo all your fine work.

    Heh. I used "Larry" as the name of an imp that I used to test out a conversation script in GZDOOM.

    Which is harder, Wolfenstein 3D or Doom?

    Wolf 3D was a very tough game in its day on the highest difficulty. Nearly all of the major enemies were hitscanners (the only major exceptions were things like Guard Dogs, the Hitler Ghosts, and some bosses that used rocket launchers, when you didn't get to use one), you had to deal with clunky controls unless you used a mod (as I generally do), you had no armor (Doom was the first major game to really implement any kind of armor system), there was no infighting among the enemies and they could shoot through each other to get to you, and you had no map to speak of for the levels in general which were very mazelike in nature. While Doom's levels were quite tough in its day on the highest difficulty, id made a fair number of improvements which made the game less of a headache.

    What Video Game Are You Currently Playing?

    I'm currently playing The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+ with the Revelations mod. I finally got off my ass and unlocked the Lost. I will need to go through Greed Mode in order to unlock Holy Mantle for him, which I can already tell is not going to be a fun ride. I plan to get my hands on Darkest Dungeon on my next big trip to town.

    What do you eat?

    I primarily subsist on pizza and Hamburger Helper, as well as the occasional spaghetti. Sometimes I like to indulge in some chocolate or some ice cream now and then. Cheese curds are something I like to snack on, along with pepperoni. Green beans are something I have every so often, as well as tater tots and such. And once in a blue moon, I'll go for lasagna or meatball marinara.
