ZDaemon CTF Map Pack 1. Almost done...

I don't want it to be a flame war either. We're trying to be open minded and create a more flexible server environment. It would seem logical that someone (such as yourself) who feels that the servers are so limited by the fact that many of them are "old school", would encourage more creative modes of game play. Adding CTF is certainly a step AWAY from the old school servers. I would have expected someone such as you to applaud such an effort. It seems that no matter which way we go, we get shot by someone. Just goes to show that you can’t please everyone all the time. That’s the good thing about having multiple ports out there. You’re not locked into something you don’t like.

SirTimberWolf: Thanks for bashing a community that has been very good toward you. Your opinion that "Noone's ganna play it anyway" is rediculous. CTF is probably the feature most requested by ZDaemon followers. ZDaemon has a long history of giving its users what they want. The community in general is very dedicated and many people are involved with various projects. Your statements about not being "able to see beyond the fog" are extreemly uninformed. We have well over 100 different servers. Many different wads, many different configurations. Most server admins, myself included, are more than willing to configure a server based on the requests of the users. If you can't find a server to play on that meets your standards, that's your own fault. Boris: Yes, skull tag has features that ZDaemon doesn't. The inverse is also true; ZDaemon has features that skulltag doesn't. Imp (aka adamizer, aka <LC>L33T0R): I won't even respond to him. Suffice to say that he's been banned from just about every aspect of ZDaemon. Why? because his idea of fun is to jump from server to server spamming racial insults to people who just want to have a good time. The jealousy toward ZDaemon is understandable. We've got a user base of 537 users... JUST TODAY! That's 537 unique IP addresses that have actually logged into the master TODAY. There are literally thousands of ZDaemon users. The ZDaemon community is the most active, involved and cooperative in the world of Doom. AlexMax simply asked for help with a project. He made an effort to reach out beyond the ZDaemon boundaries, and apparently there are those who feel threatened by this. How about helping the guy out instead of shooting him down?

    Zdaemon Wallhack/Maphack

We can't allow cheating to go on. At the time I first read Bazzooka's admission about cheating, he had 84379 points. Since that time, he's advanced to 94443 points. I subtracted the total he had before he admitted to cheating from his current total and came up with 10064 points. That's what he has now. Assuming he has truly given up cheating, he can work his way back up. If we find out he still cheats, well then he'll just be banned. I think it's the only fair way to deal with it.

Just because cheating is "possible", we shouldn't feel outraged when someone does cheat? You can cheat when playing "poker", "scrabble" and countless other games. Doesn't mean you won't play that game. Doesn't mean it's not a good game. All it means is that the cheater lacks skill and integrity. I'm always surprised when people cheat, regardless of who they are. We are a small community here. We all know each other, for the most part. I would be embarrassed if I got caught cheating. I think most people in the doom community care about their reputation, and that is what will ultimately prevent cheating. We can spend a lot of time trying to imagine every conceivable exploit and try to program them out of ZDaemon. Cheaters will always find some way to cheat. I would rather eliminate cheaters entirely by banning them. We can certainly do this. We have to deal with people such as ELIGIO [ABC] and Bazooka. They both earned experience points by cheating. I realize that many don’t care about the points, but some do. I’ve reset ELIGIO [ABC]’s points to zero. Bazooka’s rank is 5, and he has 84379 points. Although he’s attempted to redeem himself by confessing, the fact is he’s achieved that level by cheating. I’m not sure what to do about him at this point. I’m inclined to reset his points to zero, but I’m open to alternative suggestions.

It really sucks that there are those among us who are so pathetically lacking in skill, not to mention lacking sportsmanship that they must resort to cheating. We'll probably implement some sort of checksum comparison capability in the near future. Until that happens, my advice would be to leave any games where cheating is suspected. You would, in effect, be telling the cheater to "play with yourself". Morons like these are a distraction to our already limited development resources. The entire community suffers because rather than moving forward with new ideas and features, we instead have to backtrack. I would encourage anyone with a server to BAN the culprits.

    ZDaemon Contest

Interestingly, Doomworld.com is equally as guilty as Zdaemon.org in the way they have exploited the doom1.wad for their own personal gain. If you follow this link: http://www.doomworld.com/classicdoom/info/shareware.php you will find that the shareware doom1.wad is available for download with absolutely no accompanying documentation. I’m looking forward to reading Myk’s expression of outrage as he submits his scathing response. Just to set the record straight, I intend to provide appropriate credit and documentation to be included in any package containing the shareware wad.

The 1.04 source code is already on zdaemon.org. It's been in the download area all along. I haven't completed all the website updates that will provide links to each package, but they are all there. Until just a few days ago, there were links to the 1.03 source code right on the front page of zdaemon.org. The only reason they aren't there now is because I'm not done porting, packaging and updating the website. I need to package binaries and source for the win32 server, win32 client and linux server. For the record, there has never been a moment in time where the source for a released version was unavailable. There is certainly sufficient contact information available on the website for any person interested in obtaining the source to be able to easily request it. When I get the time, there will be links for each package.

The restriction that disallows the “-file” option is located in the “doom.exe” source code. Quoting a statement from documentation released from ID prior to the release of the doom source code is pointless. The licensing agreement has obviously changed since then. If you go by that documentation, it would also be illegal to modify the game engine itself, which is clearly no longer the case. Unless someone can produce a document that is dated AFTER the release of the doom source code that indicates it’s illegal to use an external pwad with the shareware doom iwad, we will continue with our contest regardless of who thinks it’s a stupid idea. If we get a complaint from ID, then we will rethink our contest. Anyone who doesn’t like the idea of this contest is welcome to not participate.

The decision to include or exclude features is not driven by the designers as much as it is driven by the users. Changes are based on priority as well as demand. To put it bluntly: we try to make as many people happy as possible. There's never any attempt to compete with the other engines out there. In fact, we work cooperativly with other engines sharing ideas with their developers. More and more servers have been appearing lately. Some of them have been configured with flags that most Doomers would consider to be quite silly. Guess what? they are frequently full of players. There will always be old school players as well as servers. If allowing a;ternative modes of game play attracts more users to our community, then I'm very much in support of that.

I believe in options. I don't agree with eliminating a particular functionality simple because one group of people doesn't like it. At the same time, I wouldn't force anyone to accept a feature that alters game play. Being a server-side option, you can be sure that everyone can play using the style they prefer. The aiming bug that you have described is being addressed right now. I've got a beta version that I'll probably release soon which has the mouse aiming working correctly. Thanks to the efforts of Duke4Ever for this fix. As for the other bugs, please be patient! We're doing the best we can with limited resources.

Please allow me to introduce myself. I am known as Raider. NightFang, who is the creator of ZDaemon, has appointed me the as leader of the ZDaemon project. It has been suggested to me by several people that I make my presence known to the users of this forum. I will try to make it a point to read through these forums occasionally and help answer questions whenever I can. ZDaemon is far from dead. Recently there has been a renewed interest in getting bugs and enhancements implemented. We’ve picked up a couple of new people with software development skills. As time goes on, we will release new versions of the Launcher, Client and Server software. Although ZDaemon has a forum of its own, I won’t attempt to promote that here. I want to let everyone know that the ZDaemon Team and I are always willing to offer help, which you can find in a number of ways. Our website http://www.zdaemon.org has many links to various information resources.
