    Can anyone tell me . . .

. . . if they know what happened to Digital Image Design? You know, the U.K.-based company that produced F-22 Air Dominance Fighter? Apparently did.com doesn't exist anymore. I know it's not Doom-related, but this is the best place I could ask this question.

  4. Is the graphics card actually supported? By this I mean go to the Audio/Video options menu. If the driver field for the video card shows the driver file, it is supported. Also, the swap file may not have enough space on the hard drive to decompress. It takes a minimum 150 MB. Another thing, make sure you have no hardware or IRQ conflicts anywhere in your computer. You can also try updating to the latest version online.

    [USA Terrorist Attacks] Comments here

Would you guys get real???? If the Taliban has the capability to launch a nuke against the United States, the States would not retaliate with a nuke, they're not that stupid!! If the US launched a nuke, they would effectively be killing their own people, since the fallout from any nuke the US has would be distributed around the globe by the jetstream. Nuclear winter would occur in almost every country in the northern hemisphere, since American ICBMs (InterContinental Ballistic Missiles) have a minimum yield of 5 megatons, which is equivalent to the blast from the detonation of 5000000 tons of dynamite for those of you who don't know what I'm talking about. It is very doubtful the Taliban have nukes, and no, deadnail, they do not control Pakistan. Pakistan just has ties to the Taliban. There's a difference here. Some gov't officials in Pakistan are advisors to the Taliban.

Marines are not sent in first. Its the army THEN marines. Army rangers maybe. Actually, you are both mistaken. The Marines are sent in first, that's why their motto is "First to Fight". Then the Air Force is sent in, then the Navy for backup. The Army is sent in last. It's the old Blitzkrieg tactic from WW2, just a little expanded.

I really wish that I was already in the USAF right now . . . then maybe I could help do something about the retaliation. I might be a Canadian, but I still want to get a hold of whoever did this and curb-stomp them in the classic DooM style!!!

quote: [Movies are projected at 32fps and depending on how much stimulant you've consumed before you go to the movies, you can SEE framerates...all this is a different thread.] Actually, no, movies are projected at 24 fps. This is because the human eye cannot differentiate between framerates above 18 fps. And I don't care what you guys say, there is no human alive who can see the difference between 30 fps and 60 fps, no matter what kind of stimulants you have taken. ------------

    Speculation on the specs

Now why the hell does everybody say that?! "Nothing below a Geforce 3." "Current video cards won't run it." Do you guys think iD is really that STUPID??? If they made the game to require a GeForce 3 just to run it, they won't sell it very well! And the worst thing for a company to do is spend millions of dollars building a game that almost nobody buys! If you looked at my post below, you would see that I pointed out it is quite possible to have a game like this run on a GeForce 2 card. The reason being is that in order to sell this game, iD would have to address the fact that not everybody has an above average system. If you've ever noticed the trend among game development, the ones that sell the most are the games that are able to be run on an average system of the time at the beginning of development. And by the way, bumpmaps and pixel shaders don't absolutely have to be implemented to have a very enjoyable and satisfying gaming experience. Yes it would be nice, but it is going to be a VERY long time before bumpmap and pixel shader capability is standard. Again, these are my proposed specs for minimum requirement: -PentiumII 650Mhz CPU -128 MB of RAM -32 MB GeForce 2 DDR (Pro, GTS or Ultra model) -36x CD-ROM /me dons a Nomex suit and awaits the flames ---------------

    Speculation on the specs

Shit yeah, that would run it. Keep in mind a GeForce 3 card is not required, even though it's supported. Since the GeForce 3 is not available to many people due to cost, I honestly believe that iD will recognize this and will have options for lower-rated systems, keeping it at Q3A-type graphics at the very worst. I think the absolute minimum requirements will be a PentiumII 650Mhz CPU, 128 MB of RAM, 32 MB AGP Pro video card, and 36x CD-ROM. Of course, everything must be DirectX compliant. Speaking of specs, I seriously need an upgrade. There's no way Doom 3 will run on a 500Mhz AMD K6-2, even with 288 MB of RAM and a 32 MB TNT2 Mach64 Pro. Pretty sad, huh? ------------

a good song idea for doom3

WTF??? You JUST heard that? Do you know how long that has been out? Yes, good. Good for Doom? NO. You need something more creepy. It might be good for the levels in Hell, though. For the rest, listen to Apocalyptica. They have some wicked shit. ------------

The crappiest one here! Pine Riva TNT2 Mach 64 32Mb. It sucks shit for the games I play! It won't even run Delta Force very well! ---------------

    Apocalyptica!

I know we have killed the music topic, but I have to add something that nobody even paid attention to in another music post by the-widow-maker. Apocalyptica should be in on the music somewhat, even if it is a complementary addition. For those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about, Apocalyptica is an instrumental group with cellos and drums. They add distortion so it sounds almost like a guitar. For those of you who have heard it, you know what I'm talking about. Two words describe Apocalyptica: fucking awesome! Soooooooooooooooo . . . what do you think? ----------------

    Plasma

Wow. I have a 164. Pretty good, huh? This squabbling is getting pathetic. Seems as how all this discussion about plasma seemed to come about after my really long-winded post, let's just drop the subject since we can't seem to agree on any one explanation. All I attempted to do with my post was provide a hypothesis for how a plasma rifle would operate and show how it could be done with today's technology. If you don't know what I'm talking about, refer to the post that reads, "Real-life Plasma Rifles." --------------------

    Real-life Plasma Rifles

I never said the plasma would travel at 0.9c. I said the muzzle velocity of this weapon would be greatly reduced in comparison to the rail gun. Realistically, the muzzle velocity wouldn't be much more than a bullet, if even as fast as a bullet. And the thing about the anti-gravity fields? It is the only way to explain what happens when you charge and discharge a dielectric material at a high rate. According to Townsend Brown's research in dielectrics in 1938, charging and discharging a dielectric at a very high rate caused the dielectric material to levitate. The reason it levitated was because the material was discharging from the underside, creating a very strong electromagnetic field that seemed to reverse the effect of gravity. About my definition of plasma, that's just what I've been taught in all of my science courses. I understand that plasma could also be a superheated gas that seems to have the properties of a liquid. Oh, and the energy requirements? Since doom takes place in the future, I'm sure by 2704 that we may have the technology to create a miniature power source that produces enough electricity to power a present-day city the size of, say, Chicago. Some of my explanation may be a little baffling, but bear with me. I'm not a university graduate here, but I have a good knowledge of electromagnetics. ---------------

    Real-life Plasma Rifles

Theoretically, plasma rifles could exist. The basic principle of plasma weapons revolves around the fact that plasma has some magnetic properties, and can be directed with either an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) or a rail accelerator, also known as an EMP beam. There is almost no difference between the two methods of directing plasma, except that an EMP by itself spreads out in a ring around the transmitter. This method is only practical for plasma bombs, which the United States Navy is rumored to be developing at the China Lake Test Facility, though without the use of EMP. The rail accelerator, on the other hand, directs the EMP, hence the secondary name of EMP beam. It is the fundamental principle behind the rail gun: a metal rail or tube is charged and discharged at a very high rate, normally in excess of 30 Mhz, with a very high electric potential difference, upwards of 10,000 volts, which produces an electromagnetic field running the length of the rail or tube. The material used for the rail or tube (how about I just call it a barrel?) is what is known as a dielectric, a material that can be rapidly charged and discharged without retaining a static charge. (This rapid discharging creates small EMPs.) The effect of the dielectric is such that it creates an anti-gravity field in the direction its discharging surface is facing. In the case of a rail gun, the discharging surface is facing the center and slightly towards the end of the barrel, creating a frictionless barrel for the ammunition to pass through. (Note: since the discharging surface creates small EMPs, the EMPs are directed and focused into a beam due to the inward facing discharging surface of the dielectric. Hence the name EMP beam.) After the barrel is charged, the ammunition is inserted into the firing chamber (an extenxion of the barrel, also dielectric to produce the anti-gravity field) and charged with another high voltage, opposite the barrel of the gun, but not enough to keep it from being attracted to another high voltage component that will be at the end of the barrel. This muzzle piece has a steady charge, opposite the charge of the ammunition, so that the two will be attracted. They both retain the same voltage, effectively doubling the difference in charge. Once the ammunition is charged, it is released into the barrel, with the anti-gravity field pulling it along at a very high speed, possibly up to the speed of electricity, which is 604,500,000 feet per second in a vacuum. As the ammunition reaches the charged muzzle piece, the muzzle discharges, sending the projectile out of the barrel and along its path. The amunition for a rail gun would most likely be a very dense metal with massively strong magnetic properties, perhaps depleted Francium. A plasma rifle can operate on the same principle as a rail gun, just replacing the ammunition with plasma. Plasma is defined as a substance which is undergoing constant nuclear reaction. The electrons produced by such reactions creates strong magnetic properties within the plasma, which can be used by an electric field to attract the plasma to it. In essence, a plasma has the same magnetic properties as metals do. Therefore, the plasma rifle operates the same as the rail gun, except the muzzle velocity of the plasma rifle is greatly reduced due to the fact that plasma is much more dense than the sabot rounds used by the rail gun. A very small amount of plasma is required to do massive amounts of damage, however, so a person may not need to carry that much plasma with them to have enough to destroy, say, a whole infantry battalion. The reason behind this is that plasma cannot be contained in anything less than a magnetic field, as it is extremely hot and can melt even carbon, which has the highest melting point of any of the known elements. This post is getting a little long-winded, so I think I'll end it here. And yes, I was bored when I wrote this; somebody in Disorder's "Plasma-rifle" post asked if a multi-ammo gun could exist, and I started to explain the plasma rifle's feasibility instead. Oh well . . . ------------

    first person or third person?

Most definitely first person. I don't think I have ever played an iD game that wasn't first person. However, they may include an option to alternate between the two, but if the graphic quality is massively high in first person, third person will be harder to do. It will just be too demanding to get all the extra polys in there without needing anything less than a GeForce 3. And I am almost 100% sure the "floating gun" models will not be used, since games like Unreal, Q2 and Q3 do not use such an approach. -----------

You will see a little tag that says, <font color="#000000">All your base are belong to us!</font>. This is the HTML (HyperText Markup Language) instruction to modify the font color of the text, "All your base are belong to us!" Since it specifies color="#000000", this means the color to be displayed is black. since the background is black, it is hidden. Sometimes you can't see things without viewing the source code. ---------------

Idea For Different types of Powered Armor

How about have powered armor like a powershield, except it only provides protection against energy weapons? It could complement the regular anti-projectile armor, for example, have it as an add-on to regular armor. It could be in the form of armor shards you attach to the exterior of the armor to increase your resistance to energy weapons up to, say, 40%. By attaching them on the outside, though, they could get damaged and decrease your energy resistance. It is a partially borrowed idea from Quake 2, I guess. ------------
