    Is it actually called Doom64common.txt? I always thought it was common.txt in the Doom 64 directory.

    I've found it to be inconsistent too. The main idea with D64 is to keep doing things and trying alternate methods until it works. Also, it's a good idea to download some levels and look at how other people have constructed things.

    Some of the monsters look amazing - and certainly not cartoonish as someone else claimed. It's good to see this continuing but with so many distractions, will any of this great content ever see the light of day in a playable fashion? Have you thought about animations yet?

    Please don't tell me this sycophantic cunt gets paid to write this dross? Doom is artful and thoughtful, the exact opposite of this lame-brained reviewer. He has clearly been stupefied by the unimaginative likes of Doom3 and its colourless ilk. He played it for 20 minutes at the most then wrote a terrible, laboured review with pathetically contrived and tortured similes: "The shotgun is, in all senses, instant puberty, which is to say, delicately, that to obtain it is to have the assumed added potency that a boy believes a man possesses vis a vis a world on which he'd like to have some impact. The shotgun is the punch in the face the once-scrawny boy on the beach gives the bully when he returns a muscled linebacker." What an absolute twat. I wonder if he talks to his friends like this as well?

    I guess its just me that found "modern" games and their gameplay an absolute bore. And making new levels? The best levels I've ever played on any game have been made by this community. If I were Carmack I'd bundle the best community DooM levels from the past 15 years and market it as the best game ever.

    This sounds like a pre-Quake, post-Duke Nukem 3d argument. Happy memories... With Id I imagine they all sit down and think "right, we can do absolutely anything, anything at all, whatever we decide, there are no limitations, it can be done - any ideas?" Personally, I think they should just give up and release a hi-def, ultra-realistic sex game.

    If they make the sort of gameplay changes they did between Doom 1 and 2 I might, *might* be interested. I want to feel utterly surrounded by monsters (with many on screen at once) and be in wide open spaces. But all this will be moot if the enemy design is as drivellingly banal as Doom 3 where each monster is a chore to kill (AKA intelligent AI) - they should be demonic, stupid animals; that's what makes thems scary. And I don't care about next generation graphics or advancing a meaningless, boring, "realistic" plot, I care about gameplay! Oh just re-release Doom 2 with some new levels, I'll buy it.

    I wouldn't take these opinions to heart so readily, if I were you. I always think its better to actually finish making one project, regardless the quality, than scrap it for fear of what people might think. It might help you to be more disapassionate about your work. Plus, you should be making what you want to make, not what the community expects. If everyone did exactly what the community expected, things would become pretty uninventive. Remember that DooM can be a great game, irrespective of massive detail or correct lighting. Sometimes hyper-pedantry can really distract from gameplay, I've found.

    If I was to say something generally negative, I think that the levels suffered from being far too overcooked. I kept thinking, just let the walls breathe. It severely detracted from the haunting and lonely experience of DooM. I do really like some of the new enemies. I really like the new machine gun toting zombieman and I really like the partially invisible imps. They should only ever be deployed in acid pits because it makes them seem like they mutated there. They maybe also should have fired green acid as a result, and had green eyes. The shadow as they move is a fantastic touch. The new double barrel shotgun is impressive too. Its not quite as polished as the one in DooMII, but it feels like it packs more of a punch, which may not be true in the slightest. I still think its a great effort.

    I'm still playing map 1 but it looks like a great achievement. Obviously such an undertaking is going to have problems, but hey, you did this in your spare time and for free. I can't ever grumble when there's decent DooM to play and some cacodemons to flay.
