I like Ministry, but I've never been a huge fan. But yeah, I see what you're saying about Selfless, and that actually sounds damned cool. While excellent production work is always a plus, there's also something to be said for the majorly stripped-down, minimalistic sound (which is also why I like a LOT of minimalistic ambient and IDM).

Awesome. I've been trying to find mp3s of Selfless for ages but to no avail (one of my friends who's very into Godflesh says this is when they had more of a Wax Trax! sound but were still more innovative than most of the artists there).

Hell yeah! :D Love 'em. I'm still not fully educated on metal yet, but I'm getting more and more into it. Your thoughts on Opeth or Godflesh? And ZarcyB, sorry for the mistake, it's just that I tend to get that from people a lot because I tend to sound like a total music snot sometimes (even though I like plenty of mainstream stuff and make a distinct effort never to write off an entire class of music). My bad. :)

Occult scenery in a Mars outpost.

...No. A) The Goths (or Visigoths more properly) were one of the barbarian tribes that contributed to the downfall of the Roman empire, and b) Gothic architecture is the kind of huge, sprawling stuff you see in churches between the 1400s-1600s or so. Aside from it being used as a designator of the modern goth subculture, the term "goth" in no way has any linguistic association with evil, darkness, Satanism, and the like. Also, I think DSM has it exactly right: UAC built the gates as an experiment in teleportation, but the demons took advantage of it (perhaps there was some kind of subliminal "guidance" from Hell on exactly where, when and how to build it?) to come through. Perhaps one of the scientists was manipulated telepathically from Hell to build the Gates, and in the process allied himself with the demons and went insane. The idea of a whole cult within the UAC conspiring to build a gate to Hell seems a tad farfetched to me. And it even specifically says in DOOM 2, in the text before the start of Dead Simple that one of the effects of demons coming through the Gates is that they bring part of their reality with them ("an outpost of Hell" is how they put it), which is how the architecture of the bases got partially "mutated." I seriously doubt a military organization would spring for the extra money needed to build entire sections of a research facility out of filthy green marble and stone. :P

  6. No computerized countdowns to nuclear meltdowns, please, that gets annoying after seeing it in 2398570134 games/movies/etc. ;) But basically, an all-out brawl where, finally realizing your threat, the demons lure you into a trap, and you have to fight your way out; then you have to make it through the final gate before it closes and traps you in Hell forever. And just when you think you're safe at home... Spider Mastermind time! (or something similar :) Although if the PC Gamer magazine article I saw was accurate, the final boss will probably involve that currently-mysterious Dr. Bertruger character, in which case the scenario would more likely be destroying the Spider Mastermind first, then going through the gate and encountering Dr. Bertruger as some sort of altered, mutated being, who begins summoning demons after you; so you have to destroy him (and whatever gate machine he may have) before the area gets flooded with demons, a la Icon of Sin.

OhGr is in NO WAY better than original Skinny Puppy was. It's different, and certainly still good, but you just can't beat cEvin Key's prime material. I've been an avid fan of Puppy and their various side projects for years; I consider SP's best albums to be Too Dark Park and Bites/Remission, but my favorite out of all the material is probably Download's The Eyes of Stanley Pain, which is the most awesome fusion of industrial, electronic, noise and ambient imaginable. :Wumpscut: is good, but gets WAY too repetitive, especially if you listen to his earlier stuff where he puts the same damn distortion filter on EVERY SINGLE SONG (e.g. Music for a Slaughtering Tribe and Embryodead). In terms of industrial music, I prefer stuff like Coil, Cabaret Voltaire, Foetus, Einstürzende Neubauten, Throbbing Gristle and Pop Will Eat Itself; the older, odder, harsher and more bizarre stuff. Most music that's categorized as industrial these days is more akin to EBM, which is basically a fusion of dance/trance, synthpop, industrial and goth, and encompasses such groups as VNV Nation, Apoptygma Berzerk and Velvet Acid Christ(ugh). In terms of more recent industrial and industrial-influenced electronic material, I prefer Snog, Soma, Meat Beat Manifesto, KOMPRESSOR (DOES NOT DANCE), Haujobb and FLA. Soma's more atmospheric and ominous, while MBM is very dub-influenced. There's also some really good dnb and drill&bass that's very industrial-influenced, such as Panacea. And now, for some sitewhoring: I've been working with music software for about 8 years now, and my stuff ranges from melodic ambient to harsh industrial and dnb. It's at http://web.ics.purdue.edu/~ubik/ , and my most recent material is in the Albums link. [/end rant]

    spyware sux.

I run Adaware after every single program installation on my computer to make sure there's no covert shit going on in there. And I run it fairly regularly just as a habit of computer maintenance. It's a fantastic little proggy.

    Monthly NIN thread.

Trent's kind of a prettyboy, but he's too short and non-blonde to be described as a typical bishounen (I can't believe I'm a guy and know that damn classification). At least he doesn't have that retarded, raggedy goatee anymore. And the term "fapping" is derived from a webcomic called Sexylosers, formerly called The Thin H Line. It's basically a spoof on all the sexual and perverse shit that's out there and it's funny as hell (and occasionally HORRIBLY disgusting, but that's a point in its favor :). NIN's good for what it is - that is, dark electronic music that has some more ambient leanings these days - but it's not one of my favorites.
  14. I forget the actual date I first played it, but I remember getting the DOOM shareware version as a freebie in the copy of the complete version of Wolfenstein 3D my mom bought me. The first time I'd seen DOOM was even earlier, when my friend and I stopped in a local tiny computer shop and saw two guys playing it on one of the computers (I even remember the exact map - E2M1); we thought it was a sequel to Wolfenstein at first. ;) When DOOM II came out I begged my mom to get it, and I spent most of my time in middle school obsessed with it. Then I just kinda dropped it as newer games came out, and picked it back up again just in the past few months. I think I'm back to being as obsessed with it as I was back in middle school, which just shows how enveloping the game can still be. :)

    All-Out Civil War

I think infighting is a useful tool no matter how plentiful ammo is; it's really one of the defining characteristics of DOOM, that the monsters are animalistic enough to get into massive fights with each other, and that you can use it as a strategic tool. And it's just damn fun to watch - especially in wads like Hell Revealed, where the infighting can get so chaotic you can just sit back with your jaw dropped to the floor while half a dozen different kinds of monsters start tearing the hell out of each other :)
  16. Damn, the proportions on that cardboard cutout thing look all wrong. I vastly prefer the way the Arch-Vile looks in the DOOM games, even if you can't see him in great detail. Although the nails/stigmata are definetely a nice touch.

    Favorite doom music?

I like DOOM music in general, but really only within the context of DOOM. I don't really have any favorites in terms of the game music, and half the time I'm listening to other music anyway. One thing: there's a punk band (some call them death rock, some call them goth, it varies a lot) called Rudimentary Peni, that sound like the simple but dark and hard guitar rocking that Bobby Prince was trying to execute in MIDI, and they go fabulously with DOOM. :)
