Thanks a million! I'll share a screenshot when I get around to slapping on the new sprite and putting it somewhere.
-
Do you have a version without the rocket launcher, by chance? I'd love to use it somewhere, but the sprite wouldn't match up with the ones I'm using in a mod of mine. I'd edit it out, but I don't want to mess up the details on it.

Here's an animated wall I made for a mod of mine, which is a screen that displays the logo of the mod's antagonists, the F.A.F. That's all it does. It's kind of like a fancy banner. ...Yes, I'm aware that their logo resembles an Iron Cross. It was meant to be a fancy crosshair and I'll probably tweak it a bunch soon...

Damp Shithole (Vanilla)

It looks pretty good to me, but may I suggest a different name like "Overrun Lab" or something of the sort? -
What are some odd mapping quirks you love to see?
CaptainResident replied to I_Punch_Demons's topic in Doom General
Bit of a niche one, but sense of progression. For example, level sets that go through a faux day-night cycle throughout the maps (I believe the Hell on Earth Starter Pack/Extermination Day does this in its Earth maps), seamless location transitions, and environmental change (e.g. a base progressively becoming more hellish and twisted as you get closer to, say, a portal.) It makes things feel more dynamic, even if it's just all set in place. I also like the aforementioned environmental storytelling and levels that aren't centered around the player. -
Back from the dead to present the mugshots I made for the protagonist of a mod I'm making. His name is Thomas. I made the variations for all of the different health values (y'know, where he gets more damaged), but I kept it to his "clean" state for the sake of keeping it simple.

So, what would you folks say is your favorite map in the creepy variety? It can be one of the base levels in the original games (1, 2, 64, etc.), or in a mod. Mine would be Map 28 of the Hell on Earth Starter Pack (the Brutal Doom campaign thing), the "Sacrificial Grounds". Spooks me every time. The Doom 64 music really adds to it.

Do you mean you want the bottom eyelids to be entirely pink-ish orange? From the glowing of the eyes?

I loved the atmosphere to Unhinged a lot, but... That whole face thing was just a little too goofy for me. Which is kind of a shame, there's some pretty good code work at play with some monsters. But yeah, the opening of it was tense and wonderful.

Anyone remember the old "rifle with mag that falls out" thing I posted last year? Well, not long ago, I went back and redid the sprites based on that Mike12 rifle we all know and love, since I've greatly improved in spriteworking. The little targeting screen even aims around now! So, without further ado, I present... The Unreliable Rifle MK2! [Also, the framerate on the gif is lower than it should be, everything moves a bit faster in-game.]

Majority of it was from Freedoom too, yeah. I can understand the revamp for the map itself and such, but the tone shift in hell for that pack took away most of the horror factor. I still like it, the newer hell in it is neat, but I sometimes miss the really spooky atmosphere.

throwing the ball around. a community......experiment

Wonderful, thank you for clarification! I'll probably have one that messes with lighting colors and whatnot for other uses then. I'll probably get to making my own pretty soon. -

Question before I jump into this: are there any limits on what I can utilize in the map? (Ex. No dynamic lights, colored sectors, etc.) Or is it entirely free? I read you're using Crispy Doom and so I'm wondering if it'll make any problems. -
Doomguy is part of the atmosphere. He's what makes it a horror game for the demons.

The Loot Box Mod It Only Gets Worse Turbocharged Arcade (both of them) Doomguy's Warzone The last one isn't exactly what I'd call quality but the first three are fun.

Was the Golden Souls 2 brought up at all? -
This was great. Great joke wad and a great Terry trap collection. Instead of the generic "Oh it's a well made map at first then BOOM" it's actually a well-made megawad that simply has them as little traps that can be avoided. It's able to be completed, seriously. That's new. I especially love the final boss and highly suggest using a cheat against him. Trust me, do it, it'll be worth it.

If you could add a weapon, what would it be?
CaptainResident replied to Phoby's topic in Doom General
Well, let's not forget this... -
I've always considered making a tweak for it where its "melee" state blasts out a couple dozen speeding, homing BFG shots at you just to fuck with people. Besides that, I'd say to make it like an Arachnotron, but give it a custom plasma projectile that moves much faster and maybe even make it fire two of the plasma balls at once like the Arachnotron in Doom 64. Have some fun with editing and give those a little bit of curvature spread to make it a little harder to dodge. Retains the potential fucking from fast firing while making it a little worse because, well, harder to dodge since there are two moving around in the air.

How many more maps would you have released if you lowered your standards a bit?
CaptainResident replied to Tango's topic in Doom Editing
A bunch. Probably a full map pack by now. A current project of mine started out as just a shorter set of maps in varied locations. Then I figured out how to change sprites. And then I figured out how to change sounds. Then change code... Then there's scripting. Basically I'm now intent on making something that I feel is complete. That's just the mind I have; don't release it until I think it's done in my view. Perfectionism can sure take its toll. -
Original Doom songs you want to see return

Getting Too Tense and Smells Like Burning Corpse (TNT) would be lovely. -
Truthfully, Doom has never been a horror game. At its heart, it's been an action game with dotted horror every now and then and you get that by, say, looking at warped UAC structures that are caked in chunks of blood and gore in newer ones. Those are dark and have some eerie vibes to them, despite their small usage. A good example is the room area in Doom 2016 where you are first directly given the Rocket Launcher. Yes, the series took a turn after Doom 3 because Doom 3 in itself was already a turn from what Doom used to be and modern games are skipping right over Doom 3 and going back to the old times, since the action-based Doom games without overarching horror elements outnumber the horror ones. Quake is the one that always birthed horror; there were even times in development that they've mentioned trying to get some disturbing imagery for the first game. Now that's the game they should put horror stuff back into, since whatever we got last for Quake single player (Quake 2 & 4) wasn't intended to be Quake at all. A return to form for that, like the return to form we have of Doom, would be nice.

They're fine. They can be great and pretty satisfying to think "now I'm REALLY fighting legions of Hell!" but I don't like some where it was all fine and dandy right before switching to slaughtermaps/other off-the-wall nonsense towards the end [*cough* Scythe 2 *cough*]. I mean, spawning with one of the couple Cyberdemons in the map a couple feet in front of you? Bit of a weird thing there, even for final levels. TL;DR: Nice if done right.

Pistol: Beretta M9/92, as previously noted. Shotgun: Based off a toy shotgun, best to use a shotgun it most resembles or the shotgun from Alien (Ithaca 37) since that movie partially inspired Doom. Super Shotgun: Just the sound of a double barrel shotgun firing both shells at once. Chaingun: Since it's a clusterfuck of being a chaingun and SMG, just use the same as the pistol. Rocket Launcher: Basically any rocket launcher, probably use something like an old bazooka sound. Plasma Gun: up to you at this point. BFG-9000: Chances are that this one would be earrape.
