  1. TFW you just found out there's a functioning multi-qubit quantum computer. When I did a paper on this in college back in 2001, it was still a far-fetched theoretical thing we thought we might have sometime around 2050.

DOOM: Annihilation - the new Doom movie

Thanks for convincing me there's no point in further discussing ANYTHING about this.

Dunno. It's one area they're evidently not skimping in. The composer who's working on it isn't a huge name but he has literal *tons* of work and has won an Emmy. I listened to some of his stuff on YouTube.

DOOM: Annihilation - the new Doom movie

That's generic trailer backing music. The sound track for the actual film is still being composed so there's no way that was the actual film OST. Very common to just use a stock track on early release material.

DOOM: Annihilation - the new Doom movie

A separate thread dedicated to discuss the movie rather than repeat the same few criticisms and responses over and over would be cool, in my opinion. Nobody from any of the prior discussed camps is going to convince each other to come over to the other side, that much should be obvious at this point.

There aren't any figures on what this film's budget is, so where are you getting your information?

DOOM: Annihilation - the new Doom movie

That part and the scene of somebody screaming with black liquid running down their face gave me a teensy bit of an Event Horizon vibe, which would not be bad at all IMO.

DOOM: Annihilation - the new Doom movie

I agree, that's reasonable. But... It's more how many people seem to be calling for something directly inspired by it. 100% all-the-time ultraviolence, machoism, all the bits. There's no way a "Doom 2016" movie would be anything but the Doom comic with perhaps less one-liner dialogue, in my opinion. And that's simply something I'm: A. not interested in personally and B. do not want to see supplanting this earnest attempt at illustrating the original game's backstory, where you're just an ordinary marine thrust into what should be a hopeless situation, but prove to be a survivor against all odds. It's the same reason I'm hoping id is going to keep ties to the original series somewhere in their new canon for the games, because if you're no longer that guy - if they're going to invalidate the narrative of "you" being the marine and require you to identify with some stereotypical "he's angry because they took his <whatever>" narrative - I will lose interest forever.

DOOM: Annihilation - the new Doom movie

People thought it was terrible 25 years ago (citation: I was there). Until it was included in the id Anthology as a bonus, nobody even knew about it for the most part. If standards have evolved, then it has been toward looking at that psychedelic-drugs-inspired schlock in a more friendly light than before, as it's now become a massive Internet meme and gets such official acknowledgment: None of those in particular but there's at least one other reference - "Witness the BFG-9000" in the Codex is a reference to "Mine eyes can but weep as they bear witness to the majesty - the BFG9000".

Many of the same people that are just fine with such timeless lines as "rip and tear", "I'm a man and a half", "Sweet Christmas, big mouthed floating thingies!", and "Stupid spectre! Gonna get what you deserve!" - and the fact that id Software put some of this stuff in their newest game - find somebody shouting "Die die die!" absurd and intolerable.

DOOM: Annihilation - the new Doom movie

It's been out for a few months now, but I realized that appears to be the same door we saw Joan looking out of with the BFG, so it might explain all the blood. Then again it might just be a similar bloody hallway, but we'll find out I guess :P

DOOM: Annihilation - the new Doom movie

Based on what? One admittedly cheesy line and what should have been expected (less than AAA production quality)? I'd like to see a better explanation of why people are so pissed off about it that doesn't invoke anything regarding green armor or the lack thereof. I see people overlooking the things that are in there, like with the above comment suggesting this movie is not making any references to Doom, whereas in fact it's making significantly more of them than the first movie did, and it's hard not to believe they just didn't have their mind made up already.

DOOM: Annihilation - the new Doom movie

Quit posting pictures of like/dislike ratios. Nobody gives a shit. There's tons of brigading going on over this. For every one of those dislikes, subtract off every comment on the video whining about there being a female protagonist or about "MUH DOOMGUY" and you're not left with much. You're not "right" just because you're in a majority, and those willing to give this a shot are not going to change their mind because of it.

DOOM: Annihilation - the new Doom movie

I mean yeah, aside from the Phobos compound, BFG, guns, marine squad going in to find out wtf happened, mentions of Hell, actual demons getting in peoples' faces, and zombies getting blown up with barrels, there's not much Doom going on :P

DOOM: Annihilation - the new Doom movie

Seriously. I become less and less patient with the nu-Doom fans wailing on about this with every post I read about it. Doom was never about the "Doom Slayer". That's something a totally different corporate-owned id made up in 2016 and now everyone pretends it was always the case. The Doom I'm a fan of was about you and your experiences playing the game, not some demi-god roid-raging maniac with a mile-long (yet so-far totally vapid and devoid of actual sense) backstory from some magical Elder Scrolls expy-world. I couldn't be MORE glad than I am that the movie has nothing to do with this, and the salt being poured out over it will go well with a side of fries for me. If I just want to play Doom 2016 again, I'll just fire up the game. I don't need to watch its plot get regurgitated on a movie screen and further the total cultural erasure of the original which, let's be frank, Bethesda would be perfectly OK with if they could accomplish it. Show me something that pays homage to the game that, for me, is still the defining part of the series. I felt the imp looked pretty good as far as a strictly practical effects monster goes. The head shape reminds me of Doom 64 a bit. Tony confirmed to me on Twitter that it's in fact the BFG - the silhouette is excellently replicated, so it was hard to mistake :)

The director is the biggest reason I think there's hope for this to be a good take - he's an actual fan of the game series and went to the source material when writing his script. It's exceedingly rare to see that level of respect paid in the making of video game movies. Doesn't always equate to a great movie, but it gives it a fighting chance out of the door.

  21. According to The Wiki, there were two different prototypes of the Cyberdemon Reaper miniature, both of which are exceedingly rare. We have a picture of one of them. Does anybody have the other though? Pictures or at the least a description of what the differences are would be great though I suspect this will be a tough one.

    Riiiiight... it's a regular conspiracy.
  23. According to Masters of Doom, Alex St. John claimed this video was seized by Microsoft's PR department immediately after it was shown at Judgment Day in an attempt to make sure it never got out past that event, but somehow we have this version of it anyway.

Early and unused DOOM 64 Level Designs

I think he was referring to the old design of it, with dual rocket launchers. Would be curious to know why that was abandoned.
