Thanks for taking up the slack. I hope things will be returning to normal soon :P

    Doom: Annihilation update

That name and the novels in general have never enjoyed a good reputation or any widespread acceptance in the community.

    Doom: Annihilation update

I just got done watching it and I really enjoyed it. I was skeptical going in, with the reviews being mixed as they were bound to be (and I've avoided reading too many of them because, really, I don't give a shit in the end - I'll enjoy what I personally enjoy). But wow, this is exactly what I was hoping for in a Doom movie back in 2005 when we instead got served up a generic glitzy shitshow selling itself on big stars and a blowout budget but having squat-nothing to do with the Doom series itself. This isn't for the Doom 2016 crowd at all - there's no super soldier mowing down demons left and right and punching out monitors from roid rage. This is more about the horror and suspense you felt when you saw the flashing lights at the start of Deimos Lab, and the dark parts of Doom 3. The feeling that the enemy is a real threat and by being the best soldier you can be, you might make it out alive like Joan does at the end. It had the right amount of fan service stuff - Doom style maps in the HUDs, red and yellow keycards, a couple familiar names thrown in; the chainsaw, SSG, and the BFG9000; some explosive barrels. Nothing that went too far out of the way just to say "oh yeah this is Doom" without it being justfied by getting used as part of the action sequences. It's not going to win awards. Some of the acting is a bit thin maybe, some of the humor might miss the mark (like Winslow noping out during one of the battles, it's pretty silly) but it was passable for me. But it was a solid thing altogether. The only fault I can really find is that it could be longer - especially the Hell part! If Tony Giglio gets his way and gets to make another entry, I hope he's going to show us more of that.

    Doom: Annihilation update

The movie is not a sequel. Dunno how clear they have to be on that.
  6. I will not be running any newer version of Windows on my personal hardware until they go back to making a regular software OS, and not SaaS bullshit loaded down with adware, spyware, and malware right out of the gate. You know, just last month I believe it was an ex-contractor blew the whistle on the fact that Cortana has been recording things it's not supposed to from millions of computers. His job was listening to it. This is what you have in your house, and even if you turn it off in the much-lauded settings, it keeps running always - why is that? I prefer an OS that didn't require a few hours of tweaking settings that pretend to turn off all the phoning home in the first place. Call it paranoia if you want, but it seems to me that everybody has been frog-in-the-potted with this stuff. Back in the 00's people would have thought it was insane if you suggested a mainstream OS would be doing the things that Windows 10 does to its users with impunity.

    Doom: Annihilation update

Well there's definitely going to be some cheesy-as-hell stuff in there, that's for sure. Going to be interesting to see how it balances out with the gore and Hell elements.

Doom 64 coming to PC and modern consoles?

Sort of, sort of not. I really don't get the situation around it. The API is pretty much public knowledge but when you get licensed to use it, it still comes with all the boilerplate language you'd expect for an NDA. It's kind of dumb.

Doom 64 coming to PC and modern consoles?

I am sure somebody will help. Hell I'll do it if nobody else will. And that's making the very wild assumption it'll be necessary at all, which I don't believe personally. It pays to be calm rather than freaking out in advance.

Doom 64 coming to PC and modern consoles?

All I can do is invite you to imagine some ways of rectifying that issue...
  11. Bad news then: it's only traditional, classical cryptography that is broken by quantum computers. Quantum computers in turn enable quantum cryptography, which is widely expected to be completely unbreakable.
  12. It wouldn't have been a cut-and-dry case whatsoever. There's little to no case law/precedent, even now, to fall back on, and WizardWorks itself was not a party to id's license agreement between itself and Doom's end users, thus anything in those terms doesn't apply to them. They're only bound by the letter of copyright and trademark laws. It may be telling that one case regarding mod shovelware that DID go forward, Microstar v. FormGen, chose to focus on the unapproved use of screenshots of the game on the packaging as a facet of trademark and copyright, and not the inclusion of third-party mods as the issue du jour.

    Intellectual debts

I am just putting this here for now. I think that people should see it and make their own judgments. https://github.com/coelckers/gzdoom/commit/126c80d597f340f5fc70fdfa74810d029baa51ef#diff-9a400c2233133f87e3099df2e8431783R607 https://github.com/team-eternity/eternity/blob/master/source/p_portal.cpp#L367 https://github.com/coelckers/gzdoom/commit/126c80d597f340f5fc70fdfa74810d029baa51ef#diff-9a400c2233133f87e3099df2e8431783R650 https://github.com/team-eternity/eternity/blob/master/source/p_portal.cpp#L446 https://github.com/coelckers/gzdoom/commit/126c80d597f340f5fc70fdfa74810d029baa51ef#diff-9a400c2233133f87e3099df2e8431783R806 https://github.com/team-eternity/eternity/blob/master/source/p_portal.cpp#L628

    Intellectual debts

Since people have insisted on dragging my name back into this argument I have one thing to say: One person cannot "clean room" code. A clean room process is where one team documents the behavior of a system, and another team, never having seen the original implementation at all, implements that specification from scratch. So please don't use that word for whatever happened here, because it wasn't that.
  15. Seems like it should mean something. On the surface, argent is an adjective from Latin for "silver". "d'" is usually a Romance language contraction for "de", of, and an apostrophe almost always means a letter is missing from something. The only definition for "nur" is a Malay loan word from Arabic for "light". Well "silver of light" means nothing to me. I tried some anagrams and none were too interesting (several were amusing though). Though, if you substitute an "R" for the apostrophe you do get, as a possibility: Grand Return Dunno. I tried adding an "H" to get EARTH as a possible word but the rest of it remains a nonsense jumble you can't make words out of in that case.
  16. Thanks for the excellent run-down. Be sure to check out the DoomWiki article if you haven't seen it, as it similarly summarizes some of what we know about what's been put in the movie from the game. https://doomwiki.org/wiki/Doom:_Annihilation

    Doom: Annihilation update

I mean, no resemblence to Doom lore if you discount: The fact it's based on the Doom instruction manual's story section (confirmed by Tony). Before the Doomguy entered the fray, he was left on the dropship as his squadron went in to investigate. We're being shown an interpretation of what happened in the run-up to Knee-Deep in the Dead. (From this POV it actually makes more sense if Doomguy is *not* in the film) Takes place on Phobos, which is even decked out to directly resemble the intermission screen. The fact it involves scientists naively researching some kind of teleportation/interdimensional travel device that opens a portal to Hell (THE key plot point of Doom). It pulls in some plot points from Doom 3 (lead scientist is named Dr. Betruger).

    Doom: Annihilation update

Plus we're not even sure how the characters balance out in the film anyways. We're given an entire squadron of marines at the beginning, we're likely to see command shifting as casualties kick in. It's clear she's one of the main characters, but the whole "they replaced Doomguy with a girl" narrative was pretty much made up as a hyperreaction by the type of people you'd expect to overreact to that kind of thing as soon as she was referred to as a lead on the film. It's all a bunch of bullshit from my POV.

    Doom: Annihilation update

Well let's see. In the previous "Doom" movie we had Asher "Sarge" Mahonin, John "Reaper" Grimm, Mark "The Kid" Dantalian, Eric "Goat" Fantom, Dean Portman, Sergeant Gannon "Destroyer" Roark, Gregory "Duke" Schofield, and Katsuhiko "Mac" Kumanosuke Takahashi. Was this a Doom movie or just a bunch of random made up names? None of these other than Sarge have any pedigree in Doom canon. I guess maybe "Goat" if it were a reference to the Satanic goat in a pentagram, but it doesn't seem to be in context.

It was the timing and tone of the twitter post that made me feel that way, but you may be correct.

    Doom: Annihilation update

I literally asked you to enumerate some specific things you feel make the movie bad, rather than barging into the conversation under the apparent assumption that everyone was going to agree and applaud you. Your response is disproportionate to that. You're fine with not liking it. But how is "bahahah it's so awful" contributing to discussion on either end? I still don't see anything substantive in your newer post. id / Bethesda don't have the ability or the right to cancel this film. The film rights for Doom belong to Universal by contractual agreement. The way they have treated the movie is also unnecessarily rude to its creators if you ask me. The 2005 film never got such treatment from id and I think it was a far worse outing in terms of having anything at all to do with the source material.

    Doom: Annihilation update

Probably a result of the trailer necessarily being all-audiences material as they generally are throughout the movie industry. The movie itself is already confirmed as having been rated R.

Why not try to come up with something specific to criticize? Because otherwise, nobody really cares. You have your opinion on it, congratulations.
