    What weapon would you retouch/replace?

I rather like the current plasma gun! As for what I would replace though... 1) Ballista. Cool in concept, generally meh in execution. 2) I liked the look of the 2016 HAR more. Sounds are nice in Eternal though. 3) Alternatively, I wouldn't object too hard to the HAR being replaced by an SMG/ Machine pistol, since it would make for a better visual balance with the Doom Blade. 4) At this point, I almost feel like micro-missiles would be better suited as a shoulder mount weapon than on the MG itself. 5) THE CRUCIBLE. I really dislike how it's implemented in the current game. It NEEDS a block function and needs to not be a "3 charge super chainsaw" thing. We should have the ability to get into some good melee loops with the Marauder, involving lots of parrying and stuff.

Fox News Is Staffed By Gibbering Lunatics

Really, goes for all news agencies. Even BBC, which used to be pretty decent once upon a time, is just a bunch of drivel lately. With regards to Fox though, Order of the Stick put it best:

Has This Game Become A Joke?

I don't care what anyone says, those encounters were pretty great, and fucking scary. Haunted Cathedral to this day remains a highlight of that game!
  4. .....waaait a second...... From the top view, does that pool look...familiar to anyone?

Has This Game Become A Joke?

To be fair; if the Marauders are anything to go by, the Night Sentinels themselves seem to have largely the same powers that the Slayer has, perhaps barring the implied invulnerability/ self Resurrection beyond death. So I don't know, maybe one day we can hope for co-op where your buddies are Night Sentinels? ...man can dream...

!!!Heavy Spoilers for Ancient Gods!!! Thoughts on Doom Eternal.

As much as I will defend to the end the goofiness and chosen tone of Eternal/ Ancient Gods, I will say this; no, I don't think the plot direction is particularly grand itself. In its efforts to be overblown and over the top (which I am absolutely in favor of for what it is), it's turned into a chaotic jumble that's more akin to someone making up random lines in parody of high fantasy, the end of which has no coherence. To wit; in the base game, I was under the distinct impression that the Maykers and Argenta only encountered Hell when the Slayer came over. Ancient Gods, however, puts the Maykers and their Father into the more traditional role of "Heaven vs. Hell", even though the Maykers are hardly angels in the real sense of the word and clearly had no idea what the hell the Slayer was on first glance (despite what Samur says). I don't mind the chosen tone (as much as I liked the tone of Doom64 and Doom 3), but at this point, it's starting to seem like someone is just randomly typing stuff and saving it into the codex honestly. It doesn't ruin the game for me at all, it's just.... eh.

Has This Game Become A Joke?

Hey, I love Doom 3 (just not the gun play). Just saying that the idea of Doom being quirky is not new.

Has This Game Become A Joke?

Lest we forget; accidental chainsaw shipment to Mars, Martian Buddy lockers, the magazines with Wolfenstien and Quake characters (I'm sure everyone remembers the BOOTY mag :P ), DR. BETREUGERS NAME ITSELF, Swan wearing sunglasses inside the super dark base all day....

Has This Game Become A Joke?

No more than Doom has always had a bit of silliness thrown in, the grim dark Doom 3 included.

The Ancient Gods -- review from someone who DIDN'T like it

I do have this to say about the microwave beam; while the spirit thing is mildly annoying (mildly. I didn't mind it as much as the OP), I did actually have occasion to use it in the base game too. It's especially useful for the faster moving empowered demons, and generally things you just need to hold still for a moment. I wish it worked on Marauders though. Actually...does it? Has anyone tried the beam to hold them down after their opening? I just wish it didn't slow you down so much, because that's the real kicker.

The Ancient Gods -- review from someone who DIDN'T like it

A fair review! (And may I say, thank you for appreciating that it may be to others tastes even if not your own/ not making this a "GAMING IS RUINED" thread). I'm still in the Blood Swamps, and so far having a blast, but with that said, I absolutely agree about how Marauders are being way overused this time around. I'd also like to see a return to a more "serious" Doom, as much fun as I'm having with 2016/ Eternal. I don't know that such would be "better", and I've been having enough of a blast to not feel like it's missing exactly, but yeah, I do like the more tense themes sometimes too.
  12. I kind of want a deathmatch with fodder demons as a third party in the fray, since they are necessary for ammo, armor and health. And plus, just adding some chaos. Basically, a three way fight, which would be awesome. Horde mode would also be cool, or even short, contained co-op missions where you and a fire team go in and do a particular thing before heading for the portal. It's basically baby co-op, but still.... Of course, I'd like full on co-op above all else.

The Ancient Gods - Trailer and Release Date

Holy...shit.... I just got to the Blood Swamps (and currently stuck at that buff totem in a cage with a Marauder....) and...wow, they really dialed things up. That first level got a bit long in the tooth by the end, but DAMN. The number of enemies has shot up big time! The scale of the fighting is really starting to feel like old-school Doom in some ways here, IMO. Especially the use of imps and zombie troops, who honestly can be a legit threat now thanks to their numbers. My only issue so far is that the Marauder is being over used. Not about to dive into a "Marauder is good/ no he sucks" thing, just saying they maybe got a little too excited with using them as often as they are. LOVING the soundtrack. Fits right at home with the Doom 2016/ Eternal base OST's, while still doing its own thing. All in all, good start here!
  14. As others have pointed out, there was always an implied "Id-verse", such as classic iD games ever had strong stories to speak of. Keen was loosely/ comically implied to be tied to Wolf and Doom (even outside of the Doom 2 super-secret level), and I'm pretty sure there were always implications of B.J being an ancestor of Doomguy. Now, Quake was a different matter, as was Quake 2, neither of which referenced Doom, Wolf or anything outside of their adventures. Quake 3 was the first Quake to do that, and was more of its own thing anyhow. Interestingly though, Quake 4 has a reference to some base near or around Deimos that's left kind of dark, IIRC... Anyhow, I don't really mind, and I think it would be kind of cool to have the Wolf series remain in the Doom timeline at least, as their worlds aren't really contradictory to each other. Quake maybe ought to remain as it is, since there's too much overlap between the legions of Quake and the hordes of Hell. Not that it couldn't work at all, just not sure what the point would be.

Sgt_Mark is making his own game, "Brutal Fate".

Like what I see so far. Brutal Doom has always been fun, and was already on its way to basically being it's own thing when I last played, so this is a natural enough next step. Congrats on the gig, and good luck! Feature request; keep the kick (loved kicking imps and blasting them mid-air. The little things in life...), and if you're doing melee weapons in depth (and especially if you have a sword), please....block key. It's always so disappointing for me when there's an array of melee weapons, but no scope to do anything besides bolt in whack, especially when the rest of the combat system is so cinematic.

End of the Doom Slayer's arc?

Where the souls of those who are rejected from the Hell Energy/ Argent process are cast into, yeah. I admit, I am curious.

End of the Doom Slayer's arc?

I think it was established that this is an alternate dimension, wasn't it? Khan Mayker's promises of restoring what was lost to the marine suggested as much already, and then there's the cut dialogue in which she explicitly suggests returning him to "his world in the seventh dimension" , or some such.

End of the Doom Slayer's arc?

Not that I think they'll kill off the character or anything, but to the question of "Is Doom without the Doomguy a future possibility", I'm going to point out that we've already had that multiple times over the years. Doom 2 RPG springs to mind first and foremost (several different characters, one of whom may or may not be the same guy). Doom 3 arguably counts too, as he seems to not be the same as the original guy. Ditto for the marine in Resurrection of Evil. And then of course, for the bad examples, the two Doom movies. But I suspect no one wants to talk about those.... ( *absolutely lights a match and chucks it into the gasoline tank!* ) Like I said, I doubt we'll see him get killed off or anything, but future Doom's starring someone else entirely has been done before, so it could happen again.
  19. Was listening to some of his stuff again earlier today. In general, I'm pretty psyched. Gordon was good, but here's the thing; there are a lot of Doom 2016/ Eternal tracks I like just listening to, but there's also stuff that's just.... there. The earlier accusation about Hulshult's stuff being insane "Chugga chugga chugga" is also a bit misplaced, as there are tons of Doom 2016/ Eternal tracks that can be accused of much the same (more so of the former than the latter). I expect the stuff coming will certainly have callbacks to Micks' tunes. After all, much of Eternal and 2016 has callbacks to the classic Doom, Doom 3 and Doom 64, so going forward will likely continue that trend. In any case, the IDKFA album, Quake Champions stuff and Dusk all indicate that we're in for a treat. The one thing that does surprise me a tad; no Sonic Mayhem. Surprised because I was almost certain that their appearance alongside Gordon during a performance some years back meant that something was coming.
  20. As much as I liked the 2016 and Eternal OST's, I .... think you might be giving Gordon a little too much credit by comparing his part in its development to that of Romero in early iD. The OST added tons to the game, yes... but the game itself is still perfectly playable without it/ by playing ones own playlist. The soundtracks were ultimately a brilliant icing on the cake, yes, but I'd hardly call it as key an ingredient as the game design itself (which is what the Romero/ ID comparison kind of implies). This is not, after all, Thief, in which the sound was absolutely necessary to the game play. This is not to take away from how the OST does add to the overall feeling, just that I don't think there's any need to read that much into it here. Certainly Gordon is not the "creator" of the "Nu-Doom brand", or anywhere near that core group of developers. Should also note that the entire Doom franchise has enjoyed numerous musicians takes on the world, so this is not the first time we'll be seeing a change. As for Hulshult; I wouldn't worry much. He's been putting out some kickass stuff for a long while now, and really was the next logical choice in many peoples minds. What we've heard is barely worth calling a sample either; for all we know, the trailer OST was composed off of various samples still hanging around post Eternal's development. I'd wait a bit more before getting all down and bothered about the implications. IMO; Ancient Gods is in good hands audio wise.

    So about the sword...

Preface; as many have likely gathered by now, I -love- Eternal. It's pretty much everything I was looking for, with only a couple of niggling issues. One of those issues though; the sword. I suppose it was too much to expect an actual melee system in which parries and directional swings would be a thing, but the way it is kind of ended up in the complete other direction. All those early shots of the Slayer's crucible and the Marauders axe filled me with images of a dramatic, violent melee duel leading up to release.... only to find that you can't even use the crucible on Marauders at all. Oh, and their axe is , for some reason, a ....ranged weapon? Not helping matters is the fact that the crucible is little more than a "get out of jail free" card. Three charges to one shot a single enemy. It packs none of the excitement or visceral thrill of a melee weapon that I was honestly expecting. Honestly, in a way I think it would have been better if it occupied the place of the chainsaw, if nothing else (though I'd have preferred the aforementioned melee system for actual sword fights). Was anyone else a bit bummed out by the crucibles execution?

Doom 2: Sequel or Expansion Pak?

By today's standards (or by the standards of 1996 onward really), it falls into the category of an expansion IMO. A really, really solid expansion, mind. The kind has so much content that it becomes standalone... but it's the same game, mostly the same weapons, enemies and mechanics, with most changes being some new resources and, a couple of enemies, and -one- new weapon. Now, back then, this was enough to qualify as a full blown sequel, but if done today, it really wouldn't cut it. Especially when we've had expansions like Storm of Zehir and Mask of the Betrayer (Neverwinter Nights 2; huge modding resources added, on top of the campaigns), the Quake 2 expansions, the Half Life expansions, and a whole slew of other packs/ DLC's for games that honestly added way more to their predecessors than Doom 2 does for Doom 1. Again; IMO, it would count as a super solid expansion, the way War of the Chosen for XCOM 2 does, so super vital nonetheless.

    So about the sword...

More responses to everyones points tomorrow (it's late here), but uh... clarification; I didn't mean to imply it takes three shots. I meant it's a three use item (recharges aside).

    So about the sword...

I mean, Shadow Warrior 2, Dark Messiah and, to a lesser extent, Vermintide 2 got them pretty well. Heck, even the older Jedi Knight games weren't so bad (though to be fair, Outcast was better in 3rd person, which is hardly desirable here...).
