    Heaven in Doom Eternal

...sanitized? In what reality is Quake 2, the game about fighting brute-forcefully augmented cyborgs, whose surgical wounds still look fresh, and in which you trudge through a literal human meat factory, sanitized? For that matter, Quake 3 had a lot of pretty curious imagery too. And lest we forget...DOOM 3. Really not seeing where iD went squeaky clean, other than maybe Rage, on account of my not having played it.

Tell Me This is A Joke...

Not to mention that taking a jab at Call of Duty's mere existence would be kind of nasty on the devs part. There's nothing iconic enough in COD for them to have any innocent ribbing like what happened in the 90's between iD and 3D Realms, so... yeah, not a lot to go on besides "Haha, look at that other game series.". iD today seems to be the furthest thing from outright nasty and disrespectful of other peoples work, so yeah... doubt they'd go there.

Eternal takes place in id multiverse?

Wasn't the lineage more or less canonized in the Wolf and Doom RPG series? I mean, I know that those are off-shoots and all, but the point still stands that iD was really only half-joking about this stuff. Again though; it ultimately doesn't matter much more than for background flavor, if you're looking for it. Suffice to say that Doom never lost its tone in favor of conforming to Wolf or Keen, nor the other way(s) around, so it's ultimately a moot point. @whatup876 I've always wondered about a Hexen/ Heretic to Doom connection. To the point where I thought a reference to the The Serpent and Corax Tablets in Doom 2016 might be some kind of a hint.

Caco or Pain Elemental, which is the more adorable monster?

Cacodemon. He's just more iconic, and he doesn't spit out god damn lost souls...

    No Traditional Multiplayer

They did, and honestly... I highly doubt it's absence will have any real effect on anything. Years later, I have yet to see anything of note coming out of that feature. Yes, I know there is that one city level that was demo'd in a YouTube video, but that's one of comparatively few examples of real, detailed custom levels. It doesn't help that the search UI for SnapMap maps is horrid beyond any use. It was a nice idea on paper, but in practice, it never lived up to what it was meant to, so I can totally get why they don't want to bother this time. As for how there are more Doomers than Quakers, perhaps this is true, but that absolutely won't push Bethesda publishing to encourage active competition between two of its own releases. Unfortunate (or not, depending on where you're coming from), the best way we're likely to get "Doom Eternal Multiplayer" is a QC deathmatch in which everyone is playing Doom Slayer. Mind, I personally wish Eternal did have a DM mode, but yeah, I can understand why it is the way it is. Wolfenstien TNO, TNC and Rage 2 are waving frantically in your general direction! Joke aside, I personally don't think MP is as critical, depending on the game being made. Heck, for most of the shooters I ever bought, I never touched their online components (partially because living on the other side of the world means nightmarish ping). In fact, there's a good number of shooters that either didn't have online play at all, or had really, really bog-standard-to-the-point-of-irrelevance multiplayer. - Half Life 1 and 2 both have deathmatch and team death match.... that maybe all of 100 people in the world actually played for more than ten minutes. In fact, as I recall, Half Life 2 didn't even ship with traditional multiplayer; Counter Strike: Source was pushed as it's online component. Which is a curious thing to consider, as it would mean that essentially, Quake Champions will be to Doom Eternal what CS: Source was to HL 2.... - Aforementioned Wolfenstien games - Does Dishonored count? - S.T.A.L.K.E.R games (to be fair, I think they do have some kind of multiplayer, but again... is that even remotely what's keeping those games alive?) - Within the Doom series (Doom 64 didn't have an online component, and yet it seems to be firmly entrenched as a fan favorite).

    No Traditional Multiplayer

As has been said in multiple threads... this comes as no surprise except to the very most hopeful of us. Quake Champions is the most obvious reason for this. Simply put; Doom deathmatch would invalidate the entire point of Quake Champions. Minor mechanical differences here and there notwithstanding, there are way too many similarities between Doom multiplayer done right and Quake: - Traditional, map control based gameplay - Combat based around speed and movement over cover and defensive strategy - Techno-gothic visual style to the maps and characters - Many weapons and powerups are common between both series (arsenals are virtually identical). Add to this the overall cold reception of Doom 2016's multiplayer and the community demand for a focus on single player... yeah, most saw this coming a mile away.

Tell Me This is A Joke...

Don't see what's so wrong with it. It's the devs having fun over a joke most of the community is laughing along with... heck, every single mainline Doom game has had little fun gags in them at this point. Ultimate Doom: The horror! The apocalypse! The world is ending, and...and...BUNNIES ARE DYING! BUNNIES! And of course...Rip 'n' Tear!!! Doom 2: German soldiers from world war 2 all got sent to hell, Castle Wolfenstien with them. Commander Keen was hung by the gallows four times simultaneously. John Romero is a living head on a stick inside a demon lords head. Doom 3: SUUUPER TURBO TURKEY PUNCHER.....3!!! Doom 2016: Collectible Doomguy toys and retro-secret levels. That other arcade game in Olivia's office (What does Olivia, the evil master mind and dark acolyte of hell, do in her past time? Apparently she plays this...). Also remember the chibi-style merchandise for Doom 2016. All in all, this is hardly the first time iD has just let loose a little. Really not the end of the world...

    Cyberdemon is back!

While I certainly appreciate that some people have specific tastes and preferences, the issue here is that an overwhelming majority kept screaming that they wanted over the top, silly and ludicrous action with a kaleidoscope of color, yet when Eternal does just that, the call goes to the opposite. (Note; I'm not just counting this forum, I'm talking about gamers in general, both personally known and on other sites). Personally, I do normally prefer an element of seriousness at the least (Love the aesthetic of Doom 64 and Doom 3), but there is definitely room for the more bombastic style of Eternal. I suspect I'll enjoy it a ton, especially if the story doesn't try to wink and nudge every five seconds.

    Cyberdemon is back!

It's the same story with the color. I remember Doom 2016's getting criticised on its first showing for being "too drab" and having "not enough color". Then when Doom Eternal is first revealed, people got mad and said it was "too cartoony". Can't please everyone.

Zenimax shilling Doom Eternal in other companies' games?

What @banjipixel said. Given that we've seen The Punisher in Archies and other kid friendly things, it's not -that- much of a stretch for Doom Slayer to show up in other things. Heck, he already practically has a chibi form (the collectible figures). All in all, it's just silly fun, no harm done and nothing to read into. Also, he does kind of fit into MK. Berzerker death punch / chain saw and now a sword? Sure, why not...

    E3 2019 Impressions

While I agree that his new form looks a bit slim/not bulky enough, I have to say; I completely, 100% disagree about the D3 Cyberdemon. I personally always hated that design, and I even put it bellow the Doom 2016 ChubbyMoose. For me, the Tyrant (as they're calling the new cybie, apparently) is the best "new" design, though of course, the original is still the best. I have mixed feelings about the lack of goat legs. Initially I was a bit thrown off, but my guess is they did it to separate him from the Barons. Overall, I am happy with the new look, nitpicks aside. The stretching skin, and even the bony look to his face is almost adding a bit of a creep factor. His eyes could stand to get a little bit of a flare though. Maybe that would make him look "meaner" ...

well I guess Hayden isn't gonna be the villain after all

Something occured to me while re-watching the story trailer. We're all assuming that the spoken words are from the same scene, context or time. However, recall that the Doom 2016 story trailer began with a bunch of Hayden's lines, all of which were actually drawn from different scenes, not the one point of dialogue. Which is to say; the voice chastising any interference may not even be aimed at Doom Slayer, but at Hayden himself (assuming the voice isn't a re-formed Hayden). In particular, "They are no longer your people to save" could in fact be someone scolding Hayden, who thinks he's the savior of mankind. Same goes for "you will bring down the wrath of the heavens". Just a thought.

    Heaven in Doom Eternal

I do agree about switching out the teleportation lore bit. However, in all fairness, everything we've seen of Hell in 2016 suggests that this is not simply an alien dimension, but in fact, Hell itself as we know it. Also, here's a really, really interesting quote... So I guess we're about to get all those head-cannon thoughts and theories answered...

Eternal takes place in id multiverse?

Look at it this way.... it would mean that this wretched son of Keen WENT TO HELL WHERE HE BELONGS AND LEARNT A THING OR TWO.

Eternal takes place in id multiverse?

Ugh... you know, it's not like I even have a personal association with the Keen series or anything, but good grief, the art style in that is just painful. Those do not look like interesting or even remotely appealing characters, they look like the type that are meant to be annoying in a show....

Eternal takes place in id multiverse?

Well, the connection between Wolf, Doom and Quake (3) has always been somewhat consistent. Tonally, Wolf and Doom aren't -that- far apart, and there are even some subtle nods to each other in the current games (my personal favorite being how the AR in Wolf has the modular rocket launcher, akin to a bulkier version of the HAR's missile pod). The only real odd-ball in this whole thing is Keen, which was always more of a Saturday morning kids adventure kind of deal. It's a little pointless IMO to try to force it in, but not inconceivable depending on what angle you want to take. Personally, I always thought of Keen as being Billy's daydreaming and nothing more. Of course, at the end of the day, the "connection" matters only as an incidental detail that you may hold as important or completely irrelevant, depending on your taste. Ultimately, I'd chalk it up to how people insist that Conan and Lovecraft's stuff are in the same world; it's a cool prospect that can be fleshed out, but ultimately is just food for thought if you want it.

    The Soundtrack!

Loving what I hear so far! I like that they have now embraced the heavy metal, rather than dancing around it leading up to 2016's entry.

    Battle mode Trailer

Battle Mode looks interesting, but I fear that it may land in the same boat that F.E.A.R 3 did; interesting and experimental multiplayer mode that's fun, but doesn't replace the old classic DM/ TDM setup. I remember a lot of us in the office used to lament the absence of straight up deathmatch, as much fun as it's strange modes were. It would also be odd for Battle Mode to be the only competitive online aspect, as the community seemed to mostly suggest that the only change they wanted to Doom 2016's online play was to nix load outs. Still ,there is one really big and hard to ignore justification for not having a traditional DM mode; Quake Champions. Yes, I'm sure we can all argue to the ends of the earth how QC's shooting and movement are different, but at the end of the day, it does occupy a similar space as any classic Doom multiplayer would. If Doom Eternal ends up having a solid enough deathmatch mode, there is an undeniable risk of it competing with (and possibly overshadowing) the Quake Champions death match scene.

Very, VERY worried about the final product.

Nothing about Doom Eternal or Bethesda/ Id's plans for it so far have even remotely suggested that "extra lives" are going to be a paid for feature. In fact, given the primarily single player nature of the campaign (Invasion being 100% optional), it wouldn't even make sense for them to build an entire system around that. The only "pay for more" thing they have mentioned was plans for future single player DLC (mission packs), which was in direct response to people being annoyed at Doom 2016's DLC's being multiplayer focused. I'll grant that Keen looked stupid as hell (I didn't even know about it till now...), but it's hardly indicative of iD's plans at the moment. I will say this about Keen (and this comes from someone who only played it a tad bit growing up, didn't spend much time with it); the visuals and general attitude are cringe-worthy for sure, but it being on mobile honestly makes sense.

    Heaven in Doom Eternal

I really hope they don't go down the "Heaven is run by assholes too" road. As @Pegg said, that would be super lazy, and it's been done to death in literally every single other setting that deals with demonic invasions. I said before on another thread that I feel like it invalidates the whole purpose of opposing Hell, or even Hayden. If the "Good guys" are just as bad no matter which way you look, then why bother fighting the forces of Hell to begin with? In this case, Earth is super corrupt, Hell is evil, and then...Heaven is full of assholes? Seems like the best thing to do in that case is just grab popcorn and watch everyone go at it, as no one is worth fighting for anymore... Having said that, rogue angel going way too far in the war would be fine. That would at least not say everyone on the other side deserves as solid an ass kicking...

well I guess Hayden isn't gonna be the villain after all

Most likely... Demonic activity continues after Hayden banishes the Doom Slayer to another place, after Doom 2016. As the UAC gazes in horror upon the incoming army, Hayden stands atop the rubble, dramatically, wielding the Crucible. "Just as I kept the lights on for humanity before, so too shall I now-" And then Hayden and the rest of Mars was BFG'd from the Phobos BFG gun.

    Doom Eternal E3 - Sunday 5:30 PDT

Just a way of saying that you'll tick off Heaven into giving you and everyone else a major ass kicking. Of course, how accurate that statement even is depends entirely on whose delivering the line. If it is , in fact, an angel heaven-sent, then the apocalypse can be assumed to be divine retribution, Revalation like. If it's a fallen angel (Lucifer?), well, that's them being them. If it's a Sentinel gone mad, insanity and nebulous claims. If it's Hayden, FUCK THAT GUY EAT MY DOOMBLADE YOU F*****G A****** I'LL KILL YOU YOU SON OF A ****** !!!!!!!
