    Doom 3 didn't need a USE key

    Doom 3's screen UI thing was good for Doom 3. It....felt clunky in Quake 4 though, so I'm guessing it would be just as weird in Doom 2016.

    Doom In Build Engine

    After having played Ion Maiden Fury, and a bit of Duke Nukem 3d: World Tour, I can't see what advantage the Build Engine would bring that Zdoom and other major mods have not done better. Graphically, I've seen far more impressive Doom mods in recent years than anything the Build Engine has going. At most, it would be a small novelty IMO, but really... the Doom community has gone far past Build at this point.

    More like it's a beefed up plasma rifle whose projectiles LOOK like the BFG. It is not an area of effect weapon, it hits single targets (unless the projectile was occasionally burning through a target railgun style, which I do not recall). side notes ,but a couple of fun easter eggs that were a little more subtle IMO: - The dead marine Blazkowitz is decapitated. New Colossus reference? - The guy that everyone thought was supposed to be Doomguy gets killed by Former Humans. People cited this as a reason for why he is not Doomguy, but.... E1 ends wit OG Doomguy getting ripped apart by former humans primarily. It may be a stretch, but I wonder if this wasn't a callback of its own.

    Just watched it. I don't understand how anyone can say it was worse than the original Doom movie. It was WAY better, and actually had something to fucking do with DOOM. I wouldn't rank it as an amazing movie by any means, but it also was nowhere near as terrible as it could have been. And there was obvious , sincere effort despite the budget. - Lots of callbacks to pretty much every entry in the Doom series except Doom 2016. I noticed even a visual callback to the Doom PSX cover at one point. - Most of the actors did decent job. No one was cringe worthy except for this one scientist extra. - Most of the issues with the movie had to do with the low budget, but I've seen worse. - Much more action than the 2005 movie. - GOod job conveying the superior strength and speed of the monsters compared to humans. Lots of movies like this do a bad job at that. - Female actress was not a huge deal. No woke- issues with the way the movie plays out, she's just incidentally a she. - First person perspective shots felt much less forced than the 2005 movie. Things I did dislike: - That one scientist lady was really, really annoying. - BFG was more like a plasma rifle in function. It's form looked plastic like. The projectile was more like the classic BFG though. - SSG and BFG are the only iconic weapons. The rest are generic, passable sci fi military stuff. - Again, obvious issues from being low budget, but some attempt to work with it was obvious. - Final "boss" was....odd. Not sure what it was supposed to be. - The movie didn't have a solid tone. It was neither horror, nor pure action, nor super B grade. But again... this is because of the budget. If they focused on either tone, I can't help but think it would have required even more of a budget. Overall: good effort. Not a great movie, but absolutely not wretchidly terrible either. It's worth a watch if you're a Doom fan, or just looking for a chill evening. I kind of wish/ hope that the guy helming this project might get another stab with a higher budget, because I honestly think he'd do a good job with more to work with.

    In all fairness, the UAC has always been a bit naive on this front. They almost always keep trying to tell themselves that the demons are some aliens they can just science their way around, up until Doom 2016...at which point someone just went " I see no heaven, clearly this means we've been praying to the wrong god!".

    I more or less had the same reaction when I first played Doom 2016. The blaster, the possessed soldiers, heck, even the Cyberdemon/ Baalgar's overall look just oozes Quake 2. I also could have sworn I heard some Quake 2 call-backs in the OST, but maybe that's just me looking for it. Though there is something to be said about Mick Gordon performing live with Sonic Mayhem, and playing Descent into Cerberon :D

    I don't know. I could be wrong too, but it looked like convenient framing to hide a things from the shot, and I'm not sure why a trailer for a film being distributed directly to DVD (and maybe streaming) would need to be so careful. Doesn't that only apply for theatrical releases? Either way, I'm no guru with anything to do with film, so it's just my uneducated two cents so far.

    I mean, it still counts, being very firmly a Batman thing. All that aside, I mostly just contest the idea that Doom Guy/ Doom Slayer is really that central to Doom in the first place. We've had many stories in which THE Doom Guy/ Slayer is not the focus, or even a character. The big marker for Doom, IMO, is "Portals to Hell, Cybernetic Demons and Space Marines". The main character in the classic games, Doom 3 and even 2016 all have too little "character" for them to be so key to anything, for my two cents.

    Am I the only one who thinks the game is a bit over-detailed?

    I like the look of Eternal so far. If anything, I think Doom 3 was going into the "over-designed" side of things with its monsters, as cool as they were. I also tend to associate Doom with a very busy, Geiger-esque world anyhow, which is exactly what I'm seeing from Eternal thus far.

    Continuing in the tradition of people just complaining on a bandwagon, I noticed that a good number of comments on the twitter page for the BFG reveal were about how small it is. It's funny, because I remember not too long ago, everyone was complaining at how -big- it looked on our heroine. It reminds me of how people complained about Doom 2016 not being colorful enough, only to rail on Eternal for being too colorful. I will say that yes, the BFG looks amazingly...like plastic. Though this is not something we didn't already see in the previous trailer, so I'm not exactly surprised. Bonus points for green plasma though, which makes it closer to the actual BFG than the original Doom movie already. I'm not a huge fan of the cinematography, if the chainsaw clip is anything to go by, but again; I was more or less expecting those kinds of cuts. Main takeaway; needs more blood. Another thing occurred to me; while I understand why our heroes faces are not obscured, they should have at least had some kind of respirators on. It would have helped make them at least somewhat closer to the original marines. All in all; the clips do nothing to convince me that my stance on the film so far has been off the mark. Not likely to break much ground, but past all of it, there is a strange...sincerity? Again, I just can't help but feel a little bad for the people actually doing the work on it. I remain convinced that the studio pushing it out is perhaps acting out of cynicism, as has been accused, but the actual production people are trying. I think a lot of people jumping on every single post that's released about the film are being exceptionally unfair, and needlessly cruel in their vitriol to people who are obviously working hard with what they've got. It's kind of telling actually, that the film is still being accused of not being about Hell, even when the makers have clarified that it is, in fact, about hell. Heck, at this point, even if they do for some reason roll out "Doom Slayer", I bet everyone will just scoff and go "Lol , #NotMySlayer!" . Bottom line; people have decided that since the movie will not be Hardcore Henry, John Whick or Fury Road, it will suck and so everyone working on the film is truly the spawn of the Icon of Sin. Bad movie coming or not, this is a horribly disingenuous, and unnecessarily vindictive stance IMO.

    A free to play project I'm working on using Doom 3 engine.

    I'm getting some System Shock 2 vibes here! My next couple of months are going to be pretty busy, but please let me know if you'd like some assistance. I'm not familiar with the Doom 3 editors, but I am familiar with: - 3d Modelling (props and evnironmental mostly) - Texturing - Concept Art - 2d sprite work - work in Unity a lot.

    Playtester for Doom Eternal leaks

    I just hope that the UAC does not end up being the sole source of cybernetics for Hell. Something I always loved about Doom's Hell was that they were not stuck in the ancient times; they had the kind of weapons that would make humans quake in fear. I liked that demons were armed with the most nightmarish technology that people would take seriously. The Revenant Program I can dig. The UAC would absolutely be experimenting with demon-tech or cyborg undead. I just want Hell to not end up relying on them, rather than the other way around.

    1) Doom (with mods. I cannot actually enjoy base Doom as much without the visual updates and free look). 2) Doom 2016 3) Doom 64 (PC ports or conversions) 4) Doom 2 5) Doom 3. I feel bad about putting it so far down the list, because it was -very- inspirational for me, but the game play just never held up. 4) Final Doom (Did not like...)

    Ion Fury, a new Build Engine game out now.

    My thoughts on the game: I've been playing it since its early access phase. It's nice, I love the atmosphere, the soundtrack kicks ass, and the guns sound nice and punchy. I'm also a huge fan of the protagonist's design, being a female who looks ready to kick ass without needing to be overly-sexy or trying to hard to NOT be distinctly female. ... however.... I really dislike the enemy roster. I don't mind hitscanners per say, but the fact that near everything is a hitscanner capable of SNIPING you from dark sections halfway across the map, at times when you don't really have a suitable sniping weapon of your own (much less as cope), makes an already annoying horde downright irritating. what is with placing already hard to see enemies off in super distant, pitch black crevices, from which they can somehow land accurate shots using -shotguns- and -smg's- ? This is made even more infuriating by the whole "enemies teleporting in". It is incredibly frustrating to hit a switch, only to turn around and suddenly be ambushed by a room full of enemies that had no logical way of getting there (not even a teleportation effect... ). They really just appear out of thin air, in places you already cleared. Worse still is when you suddenly get jumped by a couple of those rocket spamming flying things in a super tight space. We're talking Warhammer 40,000 bolter gun rate of fire here, not the Revenant's rockets from Doom. In fact, flying enemies in general are a huge pain, virtually impossible to hit without the pistols auto-aim secondary fire. Enemy design also falls a bit short. During the Early Access period, it was fine, as I assumed we were just facing the basic level mooks. Thing is; those are about 90% of what you'll face. There is almost nothing distinctive about them, and meanwhile the spider bots and one of the flying things look obviously like kitbashes of each other's sprites. This is made a little worse by the shockingly dull, place-holder looking tracer visuals for all gunfire. It mostly looks like just bland dotted lines, rather than even trying to look like a blazing projectile the way literally every other FPS handles it. Which is to say; enemies themselves neither look distinctive, nor does their weapon fire bring energy to the fight. The projectile VFX issue sort of extends to the graphics in general. I understand that they were going for a full retro feel, but at this point, I've seen Doom mods that look visually more distinctive and awe inspiring without sacrificing the overall aesthetic. Especially considering Duke Nukem 3D World Tour's lighting tweaks, I can't help but wonder why Ion Fury chooses to look as rough as it does in some places. I love the aesthetic, and some of the rooms do look pretty neat, but in most cases I can't shake the feeling that we've seen better uses of both Build, and even Doom engines. Finally; the weapon set. I like how punchy the guns are, and I like the look of them. However, there are too few weapons, and there is a bit of overlap among the ones that are there. The Bowling Bomb and Cluster Puck functionally do a similar thing (grenade toss), as do the SMG and Chain gun, both of which have too little ammo. The fact that the SMG's burning effect does not stun enemies makes it fairly useless as well. Gee, great, enemy is on fire. Too bad he doesn't seem to care and just keeps shooting anyhow.... I don't know, I think I'd have liked to see more weapons that catered to a wider range of tactical situations. A rocket launcher would be welcome, maybe an actual flamethrower too. And seriously; ammo is way too limited for each weapon. The thing is; I really enjoyed the Early Access build. I loved the atmosphere, and I liked how punchy the guns felt. But the end result does not seem much improved over that build, and honestly feels incomplete in a lot of ways. Maybe I was expecting something that was never promised, but this just fell short for me after playing years of superior Doom mods and other retro FPS titles. I expected more out of the final game.

(New) Commander Keen The Ultimate Doom/ Doom 3 (both can possibly be taking place simultaneously, as Doom 3 is on Mars, and Ultimate Doom is on Phobos, then Deimos) Doom 2: Hell on Earth Final Doom Doom 64 Quake 1? Slipgate project might have been the military trying to get a handle on the Hell gate threat. POSSIBLE PLUG: Rage and Rage 2? Date's don't line up though... Doom 2016 Doom Eternal

    To be fair, there's not much reason to show Hell. We already had a good look at it in 2016, so we know what we're in for in some sense. As for Heaven, well... we've seen something that either is in Heaven, or is a heavenly battleship at least, so it's something to go by.

    Except Doomguy never even went so far as to throw one liners in any iteration outside of the comic. And just about every iteration of Doom has been a reboot on some level at this point, except for the classic Doom engine games. So far, the continuaties/ styles cover: Doom 1, 2, Final Doom and 64. Doom Comic? Does this one even count? Doom Novels (classic) Doom 3 Doom 3 Novels (Technically same universe as Doom 3, but different) Doom Movie #1 Doom RPG 1 and 2 Doom 2016/ Eternal All of the above have radically changed who Doomguy is, and some even put in a Doom Girl (female marines in command positions and generally key roles). In general, almost no Doom after the classics really tried to adhere to to the original Doom Guy too much (argument can be made for Doom RPG though), because again, there's not a lot to work with beyond "space marine". Which is all to say; if all the other Doom's out there get a free pass for not clinging to the original, why are we slamming Annihilation on this count in particular? On the subject of green suit and the general complaints of "Swat in space", I keep thinking of the PSX cover, in which he neither has power armor, nor even a green suit (though maybe there are versions in which he's green). Either way, he looks like he's come directly from a tour in 'Nam. Yet I've never seen anyone complain about that... Likewise, the Doom 64 marine suit is drastically different, with his "armor" being grey/ black, except for the clothing proper.

    THIS. I am honestly a bit baffled by any claim that Doomguy/ Doom Slayer is "iconic". What exactly is iconic about him? The dramatic, emotional way he emotes "URNF!" when he tries to dry hump a wall, hoping it'll open up for him? Or the fact that he does what every action hero does (pick up guns and kick ass) ?
