    Doom's charm...

So, I've noticed over the years there's a distinct correlation between Doom players and metal... I first played Doom in 1994, when I was 8 and I fell in love with it immediately... particularly the soundtrack. When I was 13 and picked up the guitar, I gravitated towards metal and have played metal and been a metalhead ever since. Over the years I discovered that a lot of my favourite metal songs and bands were sampled by Bobby Prince in the Doom soundtrack (which is still my no.1 game soundtrack of ALL TIME closely followed by Final Fantasy VIII) and I've always wondered if Doom in some way or another had a part in my lifepath of a musician and metalhead because I was so entranced by Doom's atmosphere as a child? Doom has certain charm that no other game has EVER been able to replicate (which is the whole reason why after 26 years we're all still here) and it's the ONLY game that has EVER made me flinch or dodge in my chair... (except for Doom '16 which blew my fucking mind (and nutsack) all over again like the second cumming of... whatever you people believe in...). What is it about Doom that makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside even after all these years? The sprites? The sounds? Music? Gameplay? Art style? Nostalgia? The game's engine with all it's beautiful advantages and flaws? Why are you forever Doomed?

what are you working on? I wanna see your wads.

Wow. Wait... let me get a grasp on what I'm seeing here... you're basicaly replicating the actions of idTech3 (Quake III Arena engine) within idTech1, and to the extreme of bunny-strafe-hopping? FUCK!!!!

Doom map tropes you love & hate

Likes: - New concepts I've never seen before. Mappers pushing UMDF and ACS/Zscript to their limits. "Extermination Day" is a good example of a lot of new things I'd never seen or even thought possible in idTech1. I really love mappers pushing the limits of the engine. - Infighting. Maps setup in a way that allow the player to take full advantage of monster infighting. I love being stuck in the middle of a massive cross-fire of hellspawn, slowly picking off the stragglers while the big bastards duke it out around me. The more chaos the better. - Attention to detail. GZDoomBuilder can grid-scale down to 0.125mu... TAKE ADVANTAGE!! Dislikes: - Monster spawns that don't use the "SpawnNoFog" string. If youre trying to surprise me with spawning monsters but I can hear the teleport sound going off, you failed and might as well have just placed the monsters normally and not even bothered with spawning them. Do it properly or don't do it at all. - 'Dead Simple' clones. 'Nuff said. - Revenant spamming. Fastest way for me turn your WAD off, delete it from my hard drive and never play or speak of it again.

    Your Favourite Doom title ?

Me too. Hence my post. For all it's flaws and departure from the core of what is Doom, it's still a great and enjoyable game <3

    Your Favourite Doom title ?

Doom3 for me is like the retarded child of the bunch... Just, something not right with him... still adorable, part of the family and loved as much as all the others... but slightly retarded... a bit "challenged"... LOL Visually Doom3 broke new ground just as Doom did, and them Quake, then Quake III Arena etc. and still to this day is absolutely stunning (to the point where the visual gap between Doom3 to Doom16 is smaller than Doom/2 to Doom3... which says a LOT for idtech4 and how it still holds up so well today against idtech6). What leaves it short for me is the feel... it simply doesn't feel like Doom. It's more like a first-person Resident Evil (nothing wrong with that at all by the way) with the "Doom" name attached to it and unfortunately, when you attach the name "Doom" to something... fans expect Doom. And it wasn't. BUT, I do love it, it is a unique experience unto itself and I enjoyed playing it... but yeah, the retarded child LOL I DESPISE the Doom movie for this same reason. It completely misrepresents the Doom franchise and gets it completely wrong in a way that Doom3 doesn't even compete with. The Doom movie was an embarressment and I was ashamed to admit to people I loved Doom after it released... it made the whole franchise look ridiculous. Thankfully shit movies like that are quickly forgotten :) Great (and slightly retarded) games are remembered fondly forever <3

ZDaemon's new update has a virus?

Yeah, as I mentioned above Norton, AVG and Avast have all in the past flagged 'Builder.exe' when I've downloaded a new version and unpacked the zip... they'd throw up a message saying "yada yada yada this file is dangerous blah blah blah file has been quarantined..." and it would remove it from the Builder folder so I couldn't click it or run it from my desktop shortcut. TOTAL FUCKING PAIN IN THE ARSE!!! I'd have to remember to switch my anti-V's off before unpacking zip files and then turn them back on (which strangely never "retro-flagged" anything... it would only do it during the unzipping process, never after... oddly...). After a while I just fucked all my antivirus software off. Got sick of having to babysit it and reassure it "no, that's file is ok... so is that one... AAAAND that one... and that one too you muthafucker!! STOP IT!!!".

YakworldDoom... 1994... good times. Still to this day one of the most bizarre WAD's ever... "Goatman vs. Mr. Green!"

WIP screenshots of Doom: Dissension's map08 "Experiment 666". Build pretty much complete, working on scripts and custom sound effects at the moment. Will be ready to populate with items and monsters soon. Couple of the screenshots were taken using the 'fly' console command so I could get clearer shots of the reactor room. Rather proud of how this map has turned out :)

    Hello everyone! :)

I haven't introduced myself either, I've been here since May. My name is Tait, I'm from Australia and im 34. Been playing Doom since my family got our first PC in 1994. Was a 486sx33 with 4MB RAM and 210MB hard drive (which was a monster at the time). It didn't even have a soundcard so my earliest memories of Doom are with the beeps and bops of the internal PC speaker (which was as downright terrifying as the proper recorded sound effects!). Eventually I got a Soundblaster16 card and got to hear the game in all it's heartstopping glory. Was hooked instantly and been playing ever since. Got into Heretic soon afterwards too and while I do love it, it just never struck the nerve like Doom did. Same with Quake, loved it but there was just something missing... Kinda lurked in the background of the Doom community since my early teens (1998-1999ish) and played around with WadAuthor quite a lot when it was the go-to mapping tool back in the day and pumped out a lot of basic maps but nothing I ever released (nothing I still have either after they were lost in a massive harddrive failure nearly 20 years ago). Doom 3 came out, loved it but again it didn't strike the nerve like Doom/2 did. Moved to Doomsday Engine when it came out because I really loved the lighting effects but migrated to GZDoom several years ago and discovered a beautiful little gem called Brutal Doom which basically sealed my fate lol Continued mapping over all the years with DoomBuilder and then eventually to GZDoomBuilder. Doom 2016 blew me away (currently playing through it again on PS4 in preparation for Doom Eternal) and tickles my naughty bits just like Doom/2 does but in a different way. In February I decided after all these years I wanted to actually REALLY make a serious WAD and go all out with my mapping and finally make something worth showing to others so I began work on my Doom: Dissension project and for the first time started to involve and immerse myself in the community, forums, etc. and get amongst the other fans who share the same love and passion for Doom that I do. When I play WADs like Hell Revealed, Scythe, Eviternity etc. I see so much time, dedication and love for Doom and I wanted to finally after 25 years, be a part of that too. Belated hello everyone! :)

Tim Willits to Leave id Software

While it's always sad to see an iD alumni depart, Tim Willits was a bit of a dick so I'm not losing any sleep over it like I did when John Carmack departed.

Quake III Arena is still incredible today. Best arena deathmatch shooter ever.

ZDaemon's new update has a virus?

I haven't used an antivirus for years. All they do is slow your CPU and chew up your RAM in the background which hampers the performance of everything else. They aren't really essential unless you deliberately lurk areas of the internet where you really shouldn't. The built-in windows firewall/defender is all 99% of computer users will ever need for defence. Some people even pay monthly or yearly fees for "antivirus protection"... it's unbelievable what sort of useless crap people will throw their money at...

ZDaemon's new update has a virus?

Norton is straight fucking garbage (like most antivirus software). It used to quarantine Builder.exe after unpacking the zip file claiming it was a virus. Do yourself a favour and stop using it.

    Labyrinth Doom Wad

What you see is only half of it. That pyramid to the right in the first shot is only the halfway point of the Labyrinth Full of collapsing floors, spike and lava pits and ambush points... ;) There is also a marked path through it that prevents you getting lost... if you're observant enough to notice it ;)
