    800x600/AA or 1600x1200?

That's not one hundred percent true. That leak had a really odd threading configuration because I guess everything was amalgamated into one sub-tasking serial output thread, which in turn made things get choppy when a lot of things happened at once. Good example: Bathroom scene. In that, the demon is making noise and the lights are nutty, and the perspective switches. The sound goes goofy and the framerate goes down like a lead brick. So it is a lot different. They also seem to have fixed the bumpmapping to make it a little more smooth since the demo, which at the time made it look like even stucco-ish and rusty surfaces had brass polish on the edges. Is the technology the same? Yes. Are the dependencies 100% consistent? No. If you don't believe me, try comparing the dependencies (run depends.exe on Microsoft Visual C++ 6 or .NET) from the E3 Leak build to the retail... A lot of things will have changed by then. Not to mention, I don't think it had support for 6.1 surround then even!

Well atleast it comes in a cd case

Get Slysoft CloneCD 4 (ELBY got shut down I guess and changed names), and copy your Doom 3 Play disc (if there IS a play CD) and use "protected PC game" mode, create an ISO, and mount it in a Virtual Clone Drive... Problem solved. :)

  6. Doom 3 will be available to those who pre-ordered on August 1st for most people at Best Buy. That is, 8/01/04 (Sunday). Don't ask where I heard this, just rest assured I am one hundred percent positive. No questions. I saw it. GG

Emulated surround sound good enough for Doom 3?

Is it an NForce/2/3 SoundStorm setup? I think for that you need to plug your speakers into the other input ports like the mic and stuff for 5.1 setup... That's how mine works!

I don't think the sound engine in Doom 3 is vendor-specific, so you should be alright with or without a Creative Labs card. To the best of my knowledge, EAX Advanced HD(TM) [CAN'T FORGET TRADEMARK THEY MAY SUE ME FOR COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT!] is NOT in Doom 3. It will only be in the future engine license products for 3rd party development.

    AF??

It's basically a gigantic improvement over trilinear mipmapping and it incorporates a new process for rendering the far and near mip. It's pretty intensive on the GPU though... Trilinear filtering and maybe 2 pass Anti-aliasing are fine for me.

Things to consider when mapping for Doom3

I am still wondering how you are so positive of this. And also, if textures cannot carry their own luminosity settings, how come the fluorescent light bulbs stay illuminated on all faces? I mean, I don't think there's a light entity that can target a specific face and illuminate it.

Chances are there will be plugins for the map scripting, but it probably wouldn't go beyond the scope of your basic boolean algebra and math skills.

Things to consider when mapping for Doom3

Anyways, my blurb about that first post aside, I guess I'll toss in a few contributions: Don't be afraid to use repetitive textures this time around. The main reason being the combination of the bumpmapping, and specular lighting in conjunction with the standard diffuse maps. Thanks to the lack of pre-rendered lightmaps in Doom 3 the textures will not seem to be as dull and boring, and the bumpmapping adds a great amount of detail as well. That doesn't mean you should put all your faith into the miracle that is DOT3 and not put any static meshes into your maps, but use a more even balance and you also don't have to build 50 million elbow joints into every bezier patch to create a pipe now either. Monsters - I know it was mentioned above but I feel that it is worth elaborating on that you CAN probably put 15 or 20 monsters in one room and have it run like greased cow shit on your rig, but that doesn't mean poor Joe Blow with his Ti4600 and 512 megs of DDR266 will be able to play it at even low quality. I'd say try to keep monsters from amalgamating into one huge blob like the things from those Critters movies, unless you're really a sadistic fucker and you like the physics interactions between the bodies. Basically, try to keep your maps fun and playable to a wide variety of audiences. This doesn't mean go underkill and place only 15 monsters total in a map and seperate them with NPC Clip brushes, but try to compromise a way to keep them from all clustering together in one room. Maybe scripting an area that is impassable until the monsters are killed is a good way, or making geometry that certain monsters cannot traverse to seperate different areas would help too. Linearity! Big one! Try to keep the player interested in pursuing alternative goals or objectives in your maps. This applies to DM as much as single player. I cannot stress how much the linearity of E1M1 bothered me, even with the secret opening wall to the courtyard. However, as a rule of thumb, don't put an extremely powerful weapon somewhere where it can only be accessed by one spot, like the chaingun in E1M1 of the Ultimate Doom was. And I don't want to hate on E1M1, it was a fun map, but GOD DAMMIT that annoyed me getting mowed down by a chaingun (and Doom95 has crap for mouse support which is what me and my friend still LAN on) when I had a rocket launcher and berserk pack. Don't allow your DM opponents to go into a room with a plasma rifle that has a billion plasma cells (if that's what they are in Doom 3) and 4 medkits or a berserker pack and only one way in and out. Put a more discrete entrance into the area where the player can be whacked for camping and whoring/hogging a power weapon. I'd say a grate or hidden door or maybe even the good old illusionary wall trick (I loved that in E1M1 above all though, being able to hide up in that little alcove with a one-way visible wall). "The flow" of the map: Wolfenstein 3D has come and gone, man. We can use architecture that isn't entirely comprised of long, boring hallways and 90 degree angles. Get used to rotating your prefabricated objects to fit flush with a hallway at an odd angle which cuts into a central chamber at the corners. There are mathematical computations and algorithms you can (mentally) calculate and apply to make yours fit flush in a rotated hallway. Playability: Please take extra care and be observant of your geometry and brush work when you make your maps. Nobody wants a 96 unit wide hallway to run down when being pursued by an irate group of fatsos unless it ties in to the environment and adds more the adrenaline rush factor thanks to the spooky aspect of the new game. PLAYTEST YOUR MAPS DOWN TO THE LAST CLIP BRUSH AND COLLISION BEFORE YOU RELEASE THEM! Custom textures and models: I can only say this: Learn how to do specular and bump mapping techniques on textures for skins and architecture, unless you want to have those bland looking textures fit combine with the bumpmapped specular surfaces (which would look kind of gay, quite frankly). Light sources: This isn't Quake 3 and the light sources are dynamic and cast stencil shadows. There will be NO COMPILING OF LIGHTMAPS IN DOOM 3 SO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE REAL TIME PREVIEWS YOU GET TO TWEAK YOUR LIGHT SOURCES! Thankfully, the light sources will be a little more aesthetically pleasing and easy to fix, but make sure to do some exception control and place them in a rational fashion. Themes and objectives: Don't create a map with 500 billion mile-long hallways and monsters scattered randomly about. Make a map that at least looks like there's a point to playing it besides murdering things (even though it's the pinnacle of Id's new game). A good example of this would be TeamTNT's Daedalus. That mod for ZDoom is probably the BEST I've ever played for a Doom source port and it has a lot of story and theme to it. I'd suggest playing it if you're unsure what guidelines to follow for theming a map. That's all I can think of. Good luck guys! Also, don't forget to read the post I made for Linux users if you are running Linux and want to map for Doom 3.

Uh, where does it say that there aren't luminescent textures? I would think that the light hanging off the ceiling flopping around on the cable would be a fair indication of a texture-based lightsource, unless they can add keyframes to the non-game entities...

    The "City" in Doom III

Uh, Id software licensed the engine to Raven and are only assisting them on a technical basis with newer engine technology. Raven now owns the rights to Quake 4, so Id software is NOT developing the game. The same way Id helped create Heretic? Id offered a small degree of technical assistance - enough just so that they were competent enough to map for it and understand how BSP worked. Id didn't develop one thing for Raven other than an engine hull. Also, speaking of Raven, I wonder how much it will set them back to have to use the D3 engine and re-code the game for EAX audio now that Creative went demonic on Id?

Well, the shipping information I saw on that PC (yes, I saw this) showed Doom 3 as having been shipped for redistribution and the date the publisher set for that was to be 08/01/04, and apparently it's en route so... Wrong or not, that is something that would have to be taken up with the store specialists and Activision for writing a date in stone. But, I have faith in them and I am assuming that it will be there at that time. Well, not TOO many people are probably aware of it since I guess Minnesota isn't one of the states that appeal to the key demographics for Doom games (although it still fared well here before). I don't know how many people have inquired about it myself, but I asked the other day about it and he took me over to the computer and dropped down the list which said that the first batch of SKUs had apparently shipped from the replication factory and were en route to the Baxter store. I was right behind the guy's shoulder when he was checking the availability and the publisher's arrival date had indicated the 1st of August. But then again... We all know what COULD happen. Right? RIGHT?!

How absurd, sir. If I were a female I'd be wondering why I have a large penis hanging out of my pelvic region as opposed to having a snatch, and I'd also wonder why I haven't made it past the second tanner stage yet. I am a male, in other words. :)

Yes, yes. I am trolling the Doom 3 boards to get people to go to Best Buy so they can get angry when they don't find it. God, you are truly a fucking moron, and if anybody here is a troll, it is YOU. Quit acting like you fucking know everything and I won't have a problem with you. In the meantime, here is the proverbial humorous irony statement: "Hey pot? Teakettle here. You're black."

my copy of doom 3 shipped today

Andrew, you're contradicting yourself by making an ambiguous message about your stance on Doom 3. Doom 3 sucks, remember? There's no "the game's not out yet so play it first" side to you, it's "this game is a piece of shit and though I don't say it I could probably do better." So why are you posting in such an ambiguous manner? Doom 3 uses a "bloated and inefficient" engine and you "could do better." We would all love to see your brand new multi-million dollar invested game. Otherwise, quit being such a god damn miserable, pathetic excuse for a forum butter troll. Okay? Thanks.

lol Clearly you also don't understand that this "midnight release" is old news either, and it doesn't mean every Best Buy in the country will use it. It's coming on the 1st to the one in Baxter and will most likely be doing it on others too. You shouldn't condescend to the forum members here just because you think you know something they don't. It's a good way to get banned and you don't make many friends.

Yet another waste of DW's bandwidth in my post here... Just for clarity's sake, the first of August is a Sunday. [EDIT AGAIN FUCKING ESPRESSO STILL COURSING THROUGH VEINS ARGHAHFADFADFASDGAFGAFADS]: Said media specialists and store manager advised me to be THERE on August 1st, since they said the game would be there then. Not, the game would ship then. According to them and the incoming shipping manifest the first batch of retail copies have already shipped and are being sorted somewhere probably in another state or maybe the planet Jupiter.

Sorry for double-reply here, but don't waste your gas money going all the way from Pillager to Brainerd to get a fucking game that isn't even available yet. They said the earliest it will be there is ONLY on the first of August. I did inquire if it was there yet and they said that apparently the publisher (Activision) had discretely shipped out the first batch of pre-order copies (10) to be received in tandem with the retail, shelf-copies (200 SKUs on the first delivery truck!). The former will be there on the first. They advised me to be there at a time like, BEFORE the store opens of which I think a safe time would be roughly - [EDIT: Store hours on Sunday for the Best Buy in Crow Wing County (14555 Edgewood Drive, Baxter MN, 56425) start from 11 AM and go to 7 PM. To all west central MN cavedwellers like myself: Be there by 10:30 and no later or it's possible you'll be stuck in line. Also, store hours should be consistent throughout the country, but I could be wrong. Check with your local retailer.] ...I'll have to see when store hours are open for business on Sundays... In any case, I don't know what the deal is for people WITHOUT pre-orders, so be prepared to bring your $60 (tax too). I'll have my pre-order box and receipt in my car, so I should be good to go. This is for real, not like the lame DOOM 3 GONE GOLD!!111one prank which actually turned out to be true (even though I was oblivious to the fact, forged, phony email notwithstanding). Cross your fingers eh? [Second Edit:] I'll be sure to post up my impressions and a brief review under the spoiler-filled section if I get it first.

Hell, maybe I'll even see you there. If you want to have a chance of even getting it then, you'll have to be there RIGHT when the store opens. You going to the one on Edgewood drive in Baxter?
