  5. dsda-doom You'll need to grab dsda-doom, which can be found; If you're coming from prboom+ 2.5.1.5 onwards, you'll need to convert your sensitivity following; https://www.doomworld.com/forum/post/2274943 Some notable settings to look at; Under general options; Demos - Overwrite Existing: Change to 'no', and if you try using the same demo name twice, it'll automatically increment it. dsda-doom settings - Use extended hud: Change to 'yes', and you'll get stats displayed in the bottom left corner of your hud. Under setup; Status Bar / Hud - Report Revealed Secrets: Change to 'yes' and you'll get a message when you enter a secret sector. Key Bindings - Restart Current Map: This keybind will restart the map and start a new demo recording, if you die you'll want to use this instead of pressing the 'use' key to respawn. You'll additionally need a copy of the iwad for what you're running (doom.wad, doom2.wad, etc) which can be found from any official release of the game. Put them in the same folder, along with any pwads you'll want to be running. Pwads are custom mapsets, such as Eviternity, Valiant, Ancient Aliens, Sunlust, etc. Parameters and how to record .bat files are an easy way to load doom and pass it the parameters required to record a demo. I've wrote a script for this guide, demo script.zip, which is relatively easy to edit, and will create a subfolder for each demo name. Extract this into the same folder with everything else. To make changes to this, right click 'demo script.bat' and select edit. When you've got everything setup, save your changes, and double click 'demo script.bat' to run it. The script itself is broken up into variables to edit, that all get passed to the final line at the bottom. Anything prefaced with a :: is a comment talking about what the following block does. Should be pretty self-explanatory. From top to bottom; set iwad= to specify the name of the iwad set skill= to specify the skill set warp= to specify a map to start on set pwad= to specify a mapset set complevel= to specify a compatability level for what the engine should emulate set name= to set the name of the demo set additional= for adding any additional parameters. The script defaults to adding -nomusic to avoid crashes. If you do casual playthroughs, you should also be aware of the -shorttics parameter, which changes your turning resolution to match how it works while recording a demo. There are a lot of tricks that require specifc angles that you can only consistently achieve with -shorttics, and it's good to get into the habit of using it everywhere. Demo naming and submitting When you're ready to submit a demo, you'll want to make sure you name it appropriately. This post by ZeroMaster010 has all the information you'll need: The tl;dr is your filename should be (shortname for wad)(level)(category)(time).lmp. Such as evi32m2828.lmp. You'll also want to take the demo file, write up a text file with the same name, and put them in a .zip file and upload them directly to the forum. Here is a sample text file you can fill out: sampletextfile.zip Virtually every mapset has a thread already created for posting demos into, so make sure you post demos in their appropriate thread instead of creating a new one. If you're submitting a non-world record demo, there's a stickied thread for personal bests. On being sucky at Doom

A pretty notorious fight for how rough it can be. I gave it a few attempts first then watched both Decino's run through it and your attempts. As a whole I get the feeling you're trying to too rigidly stick to the strategy you're copying from Decino. You also struggle a bit with vile management. On the first demo, you run straight back into the wall where the Vile that's targeting you from behind the megasphere has LoS. You could easily dodge this by just continuing to stay along the left wall. On the second attempt, you charge both viles as they start targeting you and I feel there may be enough time to backpedal to the corner as soon as you see them both start attacking. You also steal aggro from one of the viles mid attack by spamming plasma (fyi if you're not aware but Viles are always aggressive to the last thing that damages them, and will even switch targets mid attack, so if you see one attacking and it's not facing you, just let it finish attacking before you start shooting). After you make it to the corner after getting the SSG, you can see one of the two stuck viles start targeting you, but you pop back out before it's had enough time to finish attacking and die to it. On the third demo, getting zapped sort of throws you off entirely and you're slow to kill most of the threats before you get overwhelmed. Try and be a bit more fluid with a strategy, once you're at the SSG you should be mostly set to freeform it from there, you don't necessarily have to continue sticking to a route. More importantly though, try and dedicate more of your mental stack to tracking Viles, where they are, where they're attacking, where they have LoS to you, and try and play around them accordingly. Rewatch your own three attempts and pay attention to when you're getting zapped each time, use third person camera and rewinds to really understand what's happening, because they seem to be the biggest contributor to your deaths.

    On being sucky at Doom

If you'd like some actual advice with this one scenario, post both the video you watched and a recording/demo of your own gameplay. Saveless isn't the end all of getting good. There's some merit to using it as a way to build consistency over longer periods of gameplay but it just as easily can make someone defer to safe easy strats/cheesing encounters outright. I think a better avenue to improve is only using saves before difficult segments and then repeating those segments until it feels like you have a solid understanding of it.

Plasma gun's purpose when having a BFG

Sorry, more accurately, an average bfg shot is 3120~ damage for 40 cells, plasma is 900~ damage for the same amount of ammo. So, about 3.5x the damage. It gets even worse when you look at their average dps, 2730~ and 262.5~ respectively, which is an actually relevant metric. You could shoot the plasma for 10 seconds and still not do as much damage as a single bfg shot, which definitely doesn't take 10 seconds. But sure, lets pretend that how long it takes to "recover" from shooting one shot is ever the determining factor in what weapon you want to use.

Plasma gun's purpose when having a BFG

This isn't a fighting game, your nonsense about frame data and recovery time is meaningless because you're not locked out of moving while you're shooting like you would be in a fighting game. BFG deals more than double the damage of the plasma gun for the same amount of ammo spent.

    On abusing saving in doom

I use saves quite often in casual playthroughs, most often before starting a new encounter, granted I tend to play maps where encounters are more defined and there's less incidental exploration > filler combat. Repeating the same segment over and over doesn't really make you improve, it's more time efficient to analyze the mistakes you're making in difficult fights and fixing them. You're not alone in thinking this, and there's some truth to it imo. People use it way to liberally to rewind when they eat a max damage rev missile and the like.

  15. What is there to even discuss? For every possible facet of the game, there are going to be things some people like and others don’t like. Anyone is capable of downloading the map making tools and creating the kind of content they enjoy, so it’s almost always wasted effort to complain about other peoples works not being tailored to what you enjoy when you can just do it yourself. By posting “I don’t like x” there’s not much to say other than “haha yeah x sucks” or “actually here’s why x is fine”. The former response leads to nothing of substance, and the latter almost always turns into people shouting past one another until the thread is locked because very few people ever post with the intent of having their mind changed.

    Speedrunning

Peripherals/Hardware do not matter at all until you're trying to go from being the top .2% to the top .1%, until you're at that level they're not likely to have any impact on your ability to play, and you'll be infinitely better served by spending time actually improving your fundamentals as a player. Proper movement and decision making (which both strictly reside in the mental space) are what allow you to actually conquer difficult scenarios, not a mouse that lets you aim marginally better, not a keyboard that feels slightly more premium. I'd also actively advise against playing entirely saveless, as there's very little to be gained by repeating segments of a map over and over from an improvement perspective. Most people will be better served by only repeating difficult parts of a level and tearing down what's not working and fixing it directly. Repeating entire levels is just going through repetitive already solved encounters which leads to tedium which leads to playing lazily which leads to building and reinforcing bad habits.
  20. I think it's fine to leave it as is. It's an interesting concession to have to route the invuln for the death exit instead of using it to save time in a fight, or trivialize a difficult one, and a carry over bfg can be absurdly powerful for shaving time off levels. Movie demos also aren't really that hyper optimized, there's always going to be tradeoffs in doing slower strategies that are more consistent, and it's cool to be able to control how much risk you're able to handle. also surprised you guys didn't bother to look if it was possible after "I'm sure you can find a way around it if you can't live without your stuff" :^)

    dsda-doom endoom support [split]

It's amusing that it's mostly non-speedrunners shitting on the direction dsda-doom goes in constantly. The port was started to improve things for speedrunners, why should widespread adoption force Kraflab shift that goal? More importantly what's stopping you from forking it and fixing it yourself? What makes you think your opinion matters on a port that wasn't designed for you? It's ridiculously entitled to expect someone's free work to bow to the whims of random people.

    Question about infighting.

    Question about infighting.

Actually, MBF which may be what they're playing on attempted to fix infighting by; Making monsters, when woken up, act like the player has shot them, requiring them to take enough steps to reset their targeting. Even if infighting another monster, will randomly forget their target and go back to focusing the player. @Shikamaze Make sure you're passing a -complevel parameter, appropriate for the mapset you're playing on.
