    Doom 1-3 on the Switch?!

Yeah, the online requirement has been gone for quite some time now.

    Doom 1 or 2?

Aside from the Super Shotgun, for me DOOM 1 is superior in every way. Especially the levels.
  3. This is a little thing I've noticed which I don't really see people talk about, I thought I might make a thread on it. I'm obviously very fond of the DOOM series, otherwise I wouldn't be on here. I'm also partial to a bit of Quake, but as a single-player guy, the series drifted away from me after Quake 2 (It peeked back in to say hello for Quake 4 but it was barely worth it). I did enjoy Quake 3's single player, it was set up in a way that still felt like a campaign, but I always thought how much I'd have liked to have had a traditional campaign with that engine and those controls (Return to Castle Wolfenstein was pretty great, to be fair). With the original Quake, its single player was something of a technological showcase, but really it was the multiplayer that was the breakout feature, and with Quake 3 they decided to move forward focusing on that and drop the traditional single player campaign. In a lot of ways, I don't blame them really. As cool as Quake's gameplay is, it really never had an identity of its own in terms of world, story, etc. The first game really was far too similar to DOOM in terms of theme and world-building. Space marines going through portals to a hellish dimension of monsters and pentagrams etc. Sure the aesthetic was a bit more 'dark fantasy', with a bit of Lovecraft and a whole lot of Dungeons & Dragons, and the action was focused on fewer, stronger monsters, but it's about as similar to DOOM as DOOM 3 was. Quake 2 took itself much further away from DOOM but also had absolutely nothing in common with the first game, the Strogg were a strong idea and the Strogg world meshed with the space-marine idea much better (I still feel Quake 1 would have been thematically much stronger if the player character hadn't been a marine, maybe something closer to the early ideas for the game, something more old-timey), but it meant there was no 'identity' for the franchise, especially with Quake 3 taking on a completely different form, and 4's revisitation of 2 being so brief and unremarkable. Even though the Quake franchise's single player never really had much of an identity, I do find that I miss it sometimes. It had a lot of cool features, and that famously 'chunky' feel to the controls and movement. It went on to inspire a lot of games, a couple of note would be the Gears of War series, which is, aesthetically speaking, Quake 2 all over, and later DOOM games. Of course, DOOM 3 borrowed quite a lot from Quake 1 and 2, and I don't think it's any co-incidence that DOOM 3's enemies look so Quake-ish. The Pinky is some kind of Strogg-hound, the Hell Knight looks a lot like a Shambler, and so forth, one of the reasons Quake 4 felt so underwhelming was because building a Quake game in the Doom 3 engine mostly just came out feeling like more Doom 3 with less atmosphere... But these are all just small things. What I found really cool was noticing how much DOOM 2016 (and DOOM Eternal from what we've seen) brought back from Quake. A lot of the things I loved about the Quake franchise have been incorporated into it and I think that's super cool. Several of DOOM 2016's powerups are directly taken from the Quake series, including Quad Damage (Quake 1, 2, 3) and Haste (Quake 3), and the way they are all presented reflects Quake's use of them too, the same colour coding, even down to the sounds & effects when they are running out. Quake 2 used an infinite ammo laser pistol as the 'out of ammo' weapon, so unlike in the DOOM series, if the player ran out of bullets they could fall back on the pistol instead of having to resort to melee attacks, so the action never stops. DOOM 2016 carried this over and really benefited from it. Battle arenas take a lot from Quake 3 Arena, the jump pads, level layouts and more look and feel a hell of a lot like it, and these have never featured in a DOOM game before it. They definitely designed the battle sections after the Quake series. The gauss cannon is definitely the railgun. The Doom Slayer's general agility and movement style is extremely Quake-ish. You could argue that id Software FPS games maybe went in that direction anyway but DOOM 3 didn't go anywhere near Quake's style of mobility. The whole of DOOM 2016 just has a heavy Quake 2 feel to it. Maybe this is me grasping at straws, but out of all the games id have made in the past (and other First Person Shooters too), there's so much Quake 2 in it, the look, feel, controls, sounds. If you showed the original DOOM to a new fan of the DOOM series who started with 2016, there'd be quite a disparity there, even moreso if you showed them DOOM 3... But show them Quake 2 and they'd feel right at home. DOOM Eternal has the Marauder, wielding an axe, looking very medieval, and it looks like some worlds have quite gothic architecture, extremely Quake 1. As a big id Software fan, I had often thought "Wolfenstein and DOOM have both come back, rebooted and strong as ever, where's Quake?". Knowing full well that Quake Champions exists, that Quake hasn't been a single player experience for a long time, that returning to Quake 1 would be too similar to DOOM, and Quake 2 would just feel like Gears of War/Resistance/other rusty space FPS games. But the answer seems to be that Quake's single player has been assimilated into DOOM. DOOM 2016 isn't just a reboot of the DOOM franchise. It also assimilated its sister franchise, Quake. While the multiplayer aspect of Quake lives on in Quake Champions (as much as it has failed to go anywhere with Fortnite and Overwatch being so overwhelmingly popular and all... though give it time, maybe a console release...), the single player now lives on in DOOM. Some missed opportunities/things I'd love to see: It would have been cool to have seen maybe a Shambler, Fiend or Vore. They'd fit right in and their behaviours would mix nicely with DOOM's other enemies. With DOOM Eternal visiting multiple worlds/dimensions it'd be cool to see them. DOOM Eternal's worlds show some super gothic castles and the like. It'd be cool to get some Quake references in there. Why not put a nail gun and/or lightning gun in there? Looking at DOOM Eternal, we are at a point where if they did bring back a single player Quake, it'd be so similar to this that there'd barely be any point, so why not just throw in a bunch of Quake fan service, even if it's just a secret level or two? I'm a big nerd and maybe I didn't need to write all this. Scratch that, I definitely didn't need to write all this. But we're all big nerds here, right? And I'd be interested to see if anybody has any thoughts on this, or anything they'd like to see happen. Are you happy about this? Do you like the idea of Quake's single player living vicariously through DOOM, or do you think it's a waste not bringing Quake itself back? Or maybe you think I'm talking nonsense?

Quake single player lives on in DOOM (An observation)

I guess it's kinda like a sort of Warhammer style space marine. Because all the other marines in the tech bases all have the same getup as you and stuff. But yeah, you're brandishing a bloody axe and a pump-action shotgun to begin with. I kinda think of maybe Chaos marines from Warhammer (Don't quote me on that, I know very little about Warhammer, I never played it, I just like some of the art).

    Doom 1-3 on the Switch?!

Oh no no nonono, I hate when they put that in the games, the turning has gotta always be the same sensitivity for me. As for the people saying this wasn't a thing, it was present in the PS360 version and on the PS360 port of Wolfenstein as well (though Wolfenstein's default turn speed was so slow that it was really hard to play without holding the trigger to run at all times. If they were to add this back in I would certainly hope they made it optional.

    Doom 1-3 on the Switch?!

A quick select would be nice actually, yeah. Cycling weapons is a drag. As for the lighting, turn your TV brightness up? It shouldn't be too dark to see, the lighting is correct now.

    Doom: Annihilation update

Who do people keep mentioning Hardcore Henry? Hardcore Henry with Doom Slayer? Just play the friggin' game if you want that. Or watch somebody else playing if all the button pressing was bothering you so much.

^ Not that I disagree but let's not get into that. That's a sure fire way to derail a thread.

    Doom 1-3 on the Switch?!

Yeah, I know. What I mean is, this isn't the first version of DOOM to use 'square pixels' and personally I like that as the 16:10 aspect ratio gives me a bigger picture to look at. Ideally I'd like to see it re-framed to widescreen while keeping the tall pixels of the original DOS version, like a lot of PC source ports do, but I prefer the 16:10 to having the game all thin in the middle of the screen at 4:3. That's just a personal preference and I understand that many prefer full letterboxing. Look further up the thread to see my explanation/justification. I can't check out any Doom 2 demos yet as I only have Doom 1 on my Switch, I bought all three on my PS4 but I can't get on my PS4 until later.

    Doom 1-3 on the Switch?!

Yep, update is out. Can confirm: Music sounds better and is at full speed. It's a new soundfont, it's definitely Roland SC-55, which is ideal. I did a comparison and it sounds identical. Lighting is now perfect. All rooms are the correct brightness. Tested up to E1M3 for the room where the lights go out, it now blacks out as it should. Retains the DOS color palette; combined with the fixed lighting it means it really looks like it should in the hell levels now, with that 'effervescent' effect where the colours on textures change as they get further away. It's still 16:10 aspect ratio (1:1 pixels), not 4:3 (original DOS aspect ratio). IMO this is fine, your mileage may vary. Appears to still run at 35fps but perhaps frame pacing is a little better? I could be wrong. Currently testing on my Switch in handheld mode, I'll be able to tell this better when I can fire it up on the 4K TV later (where I'll be testing the PS4 version). Bethesda.net login no longer happens automatically, it appears as an option in the menu instead, so startup is much quicker as it goes immediately to the menu instead of trying to log in. There's now a 'News' option on the title menu. Selecting it currently tells you about the update. I expect this will be used for Slayers Club stuff. IMO this is now the best console port of DOOM as it fixes the issues it inherited from the PS360/D3BFG ports. It's still not on par with any of the fan-made PC source ports of course, but as of this patch it's the best console version we've had. The fact that the music is now SC-55 based is great as that's what Robert Prince composed the music with, so it's now exactly as the composer intended. The aspect ratio may bother you (I've explained further up in this thread why it doesn't bother me, it's not the first official version of DOOM to do it and I kinda like having more of my TV taken up), but other than that there are no disadvantages to this version compared to DOS, and it's now far superior to the port from last gen. Nice!

He's not wrong. I don't defend my decision to download it but I have pre-ordered the Blu-Ray already.

    Doom: Annihilation update

Yeah, I don't think it would be considered a spoiler to confirm that Joan Dark is Doomgirl in this movie. So if you don't like the idea of female Doomguy, then you won't like the movie. For the people I've seen worried not about gender as much as the fact that it's a 'little girl' (their words, not mine), well, she's a total badass in the film. Kicks a whole lot of ass. The butt-kicking is way above and beyond the 2005 film, regardless of budget. I really like what they did with her. The director has said several times that Doom is his all-time favourite game.

    Doom: Annihilation update

The theory that Hector Savage is really Doomguy for example. Incorrect. This movie has “Doomgirl”, complete with Doomguy’s backstory. It’s a gender swap of the character. She’s awesome though.

What would be your ideal doom movie?

James Wan directs. Sam Raimi produces. Add film grain, make it look like a drive-in flick. Grindhouse style. Use a ridiculous amount of blood, on the level of the Evil Dead remake. Needs to be corny and know it. Go full-on "Demons from hell" but own how stupid it is. Cacodemons! PRACTICAL cacodemons. Think of the beholder from Big Trouble in Little China. Junkie XL does the soundtrack. Get some metal songs in there. License some of the songs Robert Prince copied for the game. Adapt Doom 1993. 2016 wouldn't work as a film but there could be elements of it.

    Doom: Annihilation update

Yep, it leaked. I've seen it. Of course I intend to buy the Blu-Ray to atone for my downloading sins (I was gonna do it this way anyway since it comes out a month late here in the UK). I liked it. I mean you have to go in knowing it's low budget, obviously, but I had a lot of fun with this. Also a lot of the theories on here are wrong :P Don't get your hopes up about the whole Hector Savage thing.

Doom Annihilation positives and negatives (no spoilers)

Not out. Leaked. I'm not about to share any links or anything like that though, obviously. I intend to buy a copy when it's available. I've seen it also. Enjoyed it a lot. If you consider the budget, it's well done, but it's not about to change the mind of anybody who hated the trailers. It was way better than the 2005 film IMO, but in a lot of ways, quite similar to it! Way more action, the guns aren't wasted, and you get a good look at the monsters as this movie isn't impossibly dark like the previous one. Don't get your hopes up for many things we didn't already see in the 2005 one. Just a few things are done a bit better. Don't expect 'proper' hell... Despite a lot of people's theories, Joan Dark IS gender-swapped Doomguy. She has his backstory from the original game manual and she's a total badass. I don't have a problem with this at all, but if you d0, especially if you're one of the people who had the theory that it was Hector Savage, then you are going to be disappointed. Of course, do not expect 'Doom Slayer' at all, this is not a movie of the 2016 game. I don't think that game even existed when this was written. This is the teleportation storyline, not the Argent Energy one. They did a lot with the budget they had. Apart from a couple of slightly cringey moments (just in terms of low budget, it can't be helped) it was a pretty damn competent sci-fi film and it's more loyal to the games than the previous movie was. Don't expect any demons you didn't see in trailers, but the ones that are there are way better than they appeared in the trailers, they do some cool shit and the action is really nicely done. I had fun with it, I'll be picking up the Blu-Ray and will watch it again. A lot of fun to be had. Far from perfect but if you were expecting that from a straight-to-video movie by Universal 1440 then you don't understand movies :P

Slip of the tongue. No Rest For The Wicked is the original phrase it's playing off of :P

    baron of hell dislike?

You kidding me? I think the 2016 one looks fantastic. Those renders you shared are a good representation of the classic one but they're pretty goofy.

    Doom 1-3 on the Switch?!

Also the Doom 3 Xbox version has the Knee Deep in the Dead skybox for the whole game, ruining the atmosphere for the hell stages especially. As for Final Doom, I can't say I care much. I find Evilution to be mostly garbage and Plutonia to be a complete cluster fuck (A million chain gunners and revenants = better level design, right guys? :P). Of course it'd be nice if people could play them but really I'm not too bothered about them not being included and I wouldn't call it a 'fuck up' in that regard. It is a bit weird that we get Master Levels though. Perhaps they're planning to release Final Doom at a later date. As for PSX Doom remaster - While that would be cool I'm not going to lose any sleep over it not happening. I've played the Total Conversion and it's weird how barren all the levels look in high resolution, and the coloured sectors don't do much to alleviate that (they look kinda goofy once it's in HD in all honesty)... But Doom 64 is coming out and that has all the Aubrey Hodges sounds and music and a much improved version of the coloured sector lighting. So it's cool that we will have a representation of that vision of the franchise available on modern hardware. I'm still looking forward to seeing these fixes they talked about. I feel like since they were 'shadow dropped' (launched without buildup) on the anniversary of the game, some stuff was rushed a little. I think this could be a great port with a few minor fixes.

    Doom 1-3 on the Switch?!

A bit weird that No Rest For The Wicked didn't show up after it was in the previous release that this was based on, definitely. Perhaps there was a legal reason for that? Final Doom though? Can't say I'm particularly bothered by it not being included. If I remember correctly the only console port (aside from the PS1 one back in the day) was on PS3 in 'Doom Classic Complete'. I dunno if I feel like taking on Plutonia Chaingunner and Revenant spam without a mouse, though...

Is E4 in Ultimate Doom optional?

I gotta say, going through the bowels of hell, Spider Mastermind as the final boss, that awesome camera pan and the "THE END" text, perfect ending. Spider Mastermind AGAIN and then the "Daisy, your pet rabbit" gag, it's funny but it's clearly an amusing epilogue, not the ending. There's no shame in passing it. I play through it sometimes sure, and it has a few great levels in there, but if you don't get along with it, that doesn't mean you didn't get along with Doom.

Is E4 in Ultimate Doom optional?

For years I hadn’t beaten Thy Flesh Consumed, but I maintain that I had beaten DOOM, just not Ultimate DOOM. I went back to it later and got my revenge though. You can say you beat DOOM 3 without beating Resurrection of Evil, or, say, Oblivion without The Shivering Isles. You can beat Dark Souls without doing Artorias of the Abyss. I’d recommend giving it a shot sometime though. If you’re trying to get through the series as a whole to see it all, skip E4 and come back later when you’re done and want more. For me the mainline series is DOOM (not ultimate), DOOM 2, DOOM 64, DOOM 3, DOOM 2016. Thy Flesh Consumed, Final Doom and Resurrection of Evil are all expansions for if you want more.
