  1. Need some help from you network gurus out there,

As some of you already know, my laptop has died. It's going back to the factory to be fixed/binned, but in the meantime I'm taking my desktop from home back down to university with me.

In my room at uni I have a LAN connection to the university's resnet. My laptop was configured to use it, and my subscription included the laptop's physical address.

My desktop, on the other hand, is currently configured to use my cable modem at home. It plugs in via USB.

Now I know I will need to update my resnet subscription with my desktop's physical address, I can do that OK. Thing is, under ipconfig /all it's showing the address as my cable modem, under Ethernet Adapter local area connection 3. I thought it would be the LAN port? Surely that won't be the right address to update my subscription with?

If I insert the network cable when i get it back to uni, will it switch to that automagically? Do I need to do anything to get it to work, and for that matter, to get it to work on my cable modem when I bring it back home again?
