    Romero And Carmack Live Stream

Carmack is entirely uninteresting to me in 2023. He hasn't done anything worthwhile since 1999.
  3. The CD32 is basically an Amiga 1200. It's not even on the level of the 32X and Jaguar, and both of those ports got aborted. Also it never actually hit the US -- just Europe and Canada as far as I know.

Is DOOM 64 the best looking N64 game?

Some contenders: Star Wars Rogue Squadron Star Wars: Battle for Naboo Perfect Dark Paper Mario Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards Conker's Bad Fur Day 1080 Snowboarding F-Zero X (basic textures but super fast gameplay and consistent 60fps) The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask Sin and Punishment I do love how Doom 64 looks and feels, though.
  5. The 3DO was the only console in the US that could actually run it in 1994. The PS1 and Saturn were out in Japan in late 1994, but they didn't hit the US until 1995. There was going to be a Jaguar CD port but it was canceled due to the failure of the platform. And the game was beyond the capabilities of the SEGA CD, Turbografx CD, CD-i, or CD32.

    What is your favorite book?

Dune. It's the defining work in the science fiction genre in any medium.
  7. None of the Turok games were ever good. I felt that way in the 90s playing them on my Nintendo 64 and I feel that way now playing the modern ports.

    Doom 3 in 2023

It wasn't good when it came out either. It had impressive visuals and sound design but the gunplay is and always has been horrible, the story is horrible and unskippable, they try to make it a horror game but supplies are too plentiful and the difficulty is too low, they rely entirely too much on jumpscares, etc. If it didn't have "Doom" in the title I'm convinced it would be forgotten as it deserves to be.

    What Was Your Last Purchase?

65" LG 4K OLED TV Dolby Vision capable Sony 4K Blu Ray player Yamaha receiver Klipsch reference 5.1 home theater speakers Can't wait to watch some 4K Blu Rays on this setup. I already had a 4K player and a 4K LED TV, but this new setup should be a massive upgrade. Going to watch these on 4K Blu: Lord of the Rings Extended Edition trilogy Dune (the good Denis Villeneuve version, not the hot garbage David Lynch version) Blade Runner 2049 Arrival Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse The Batman Dredd The Fifth Element Atomic Blonde Those are some of the best-rated 4K discs as far as picture quality goes. Should be enough to put the new equipment to good use. Just waiting for it all to arrive.

How do you launch your favorite source port?

I use GZDoom on Linux. I have the .wad and .pk3 file types set to automatically open GZDoom when I double click on them, so I just click whatever I feel like playing. Then the GZDoom menu asks what IWAD I want to use with whatever I clicked on, I select the right one, and it launches.

What are some WADs you don't think get enough respect/recognition?

The Golden Souls .WADs are all incredibly well crafted.

Do you destroy all the explosive barrels or leave them?

I save the ammo unless I can use them to damage enemies or trigger something else (such as the secret map in Doom 64).

    Patch The Doom 64 Re-releases

So I still have to sit through 500 years of logos every time I boot up the Switch version. Saw there was an update but nobody thought to fix that nonsense? Would rather play the N64 version at this point.

    unpopular retro opinions

David Lynch's Dune is the worst big budget movie ever made. It's an insult to the novel it's based on and the entire medium of film on the whole. Toto's soundtrack is awesome but everything else about the movie is horrible. Lynch took a book about politics, economics, philosophy, sociology, coming of age, dealing with trauma, religion, war, psychology, bigotry, existentialism, and power dynamics and he turned it into a cheesy parody of Star Wars starring White Space Jesus. He loves to say that the reason the movie sucked was because he didn't have final cut, but the real problem is he decided to make a pretentious monument to his own ego instead of making the slightest effort to understand the point of the novel he was adapting. The changes that the producers vetoed were things like him wanting to film the whole thing in black and white and having all the characters carry around live aardvarks (they convinced him to settle for pugs, which was still ridiculously dumb). The movie was more expensive than any Star Wars film to date but the costumes looked like Hefty bags and the sets were barren and cheesy like an episode of 1966 Batman. All they were missing were gigantic labels in all capital letters. They hired plenty of good actors but the performances are ridiculously wooden and lifeless. For an inexplicable reason Lynch decided to have the characters dub internal whispering monologues over close up shots of the actors making constipation faces. Rather than, you know, conveying the information visually as one does when making a film, he decided to simply have the characters announce things directly to the audience. David Lynch tried to turn Dune into Star Wars, but the problem is that George Lucas already turned Dune into Star Wars. He called it "Star Wars" and unlike Lynch's Dune, it didn't suck.

XP was the last Windows OS I used daily. I hated Vista which is what made me install Linux permanently. I had tried Linux back when Windows ME released and sucked, but desktop Linux was too primitive back then and I was in the 5th grade so I wasn't willing to put in the effort to learn. But I was in high school by the time Vista came out and Linux was much easier to install and use by that time. Had a dual boot, Linux for day to day stuff and Windows 7 for gaming, but eventually abandoned the Windows partition altogether because I simply didn't use it. Been a Linux Mint guy for several years but have also used Fedora, OpenSUSE, Mageia, Puppy Linux, Ubuntu, Lubuntu, Xubuntu, Kubuntu, Sabayon, MX Linux, Antix, and several others. Settled on Mint because it requires the least configuration and is binary compatible with the majority of Debian and Ubuntu software (which makes sense considering Mint is based on Ubuntu and Ubuntu is based on Debian). I will never go back to Windows.

    I didn't really like Doom 3

I would have thought from the tone of my posts that people would get I was kidding. Of course my dad isn't going to fight anyone over a video game. Lighten up.

    I didn't really like Doom 3

Not liking Doom 3 means all your senses are working correctly. It's an awful excuse for a video game, and not just "a bad Doom game" like some people claim. It was impressive when it came out from an audiovisual perspective, but that's it. It sucks as a shooter, it sucks as a horror game, the story sucks, the level design sucks.

    nostalgic console port

You seem pretty invested in defending horrible games. I'm sorry for whatever happened to you that made you this way.

    nostalgic console port

Which circles me back to the battered spouse metaphor. Sorry man, but SNES, 3DO, 32X, and Saturn ports are ridiculously, ludicrously bad.

    nostalgic console port

You play the game. You don't grade on a scale for technical limitations. Either it's fun or it ain't, and it ain't. It could be the most technically impressive thing in the history of the world and it wouldn't matter one bit because it sucks major ass to play.

    nostalgic console port

I'm sorry you had to play SNES Doom as a kid and I'm sorry you've convinced yourself it wasn't that bad, like a battered woman telling the police, "He doesn't really mean it!"
