This week we're having an earlier ECS than usual on Friday, because Sunday is Christmas Eve, on which most of us will be busy celebrating the holidays! This week in ECS we are playing Co-op in the maps of H2H X-mas and with the holiday themed DoomXmas.wad graphics mod! The session commences tomorrow on Friday, December 22nd 2023, at 8PM CET / 2PM EST! H2H X-mas is a Christmas themed Doom II megawad released in December 1995 by the Head-2-Head Gaming Network. It features 32 merry maps, Christmas songs as music, and new holiday-themed textures. According to the authors, the "experience is so real... you'll get cold just playing it."     thoughts on The Doom Awards™

    I haven't been that long in the Zandronum community to know the entire history of those bad actors in multiplayer, but yes, I know which certain butthead you're talking about, and yes, some people are that petty. That butthead has proved that some people indeed spend that much time and energy in trying to find ways of attacking or corrupting a system. A voting system like the one the Doom Awards had is vulnerable to that behavior, especially if it can't be moderated well enough without spending more than half of your own staff's time and energy on it.

  6. Euroboros Community Sessions - Week #73: Skulltag Fortress Wadazine CTF Hello everyone! This week in ECS we are playing the latest public beta version 0.93 of Skulltag Fortress by yours truly, Kaapeli47, in the maps of Wadazine CTF by the Wadazine community! The session commences tomorrow on Sunday, December 17th 2023, at 8PM CET / 2PM EST! Skulltag Fortress is a class-based team gameplay mod, inspired by QuakeWorld Team Fortress and Team Fortress Classic! The mod is still work-in-progress, runs under Skulltag content and utilizes its weapons, and soon also its items! At the moment the mod features 10 playable classes with their own unique arsenal, health + armor stats and movement speed. When spawning, the game will tell the class you're using, as well as its statistics, arsenal and possible Alt-Fire actions! Play as the Infantry for a classic-Doomy and versatile approach, or as the Scout for faster movement speed but with a weaker Shotgun, a Nailgun that slows down enemies, and throwable grenades. The Rocketeer and Gunner can apply pressure to the front, and the Demolitioner and Pioneer can establish firm defenses with remote detonated pipe bombs and a sentry gun in your team's base. Depending on the map and the amount of players, you can also use the Scorcher, Marksman, Medic, or Ghost as utility for covering the battlefield with fire, sniping from a far, supporting your team with extra health, or doing stealth attacks. We will be using Skulltag Fortress with Wadazine CTF maps. Skulltag Fortress is especially fun with a lot of players, and we hope to get as much for this session! So many great multiplayer projects this year, such as Alphatius by @hiimaura, Lover's Quarrel by @Peccatum Mihzamiz, @myolden & the rest of the PUSS community, and Foxy Deathmatch by @Major Arlene were left without a mention which would've been nice, but then again the jury for multiplayer this year was once again just one person, which was @dew. He does amazing work towards researching multiplayer every year, but I don't blame him if this year was simply too big for multiplayer. You can have only so much time and energy with one person to try and make a myriad of writeups, whether they're awards or mentions, for half a dozen great multiplayer projects released in a year, which compared to even the last five years is a spectacular amount. With that said, it was amazing for Dew to feature the first ever silver Cacoward for a multiplayer project this year, and if the amount of multiplayer releases next year is consistent with this one (if not higher) I hope we get to see even more of those in addition to the golden ones and sidebar mentions. One amazing gameplay mod I also would've liked to see at least a mention of is GZChaos by @kevansevans. This is a mod which you use to see the world of Doom burn, for better or (probably) worse for yourself. With its 200+ different mutators that by default roll every 30 seconds, it can make the game ridiculously easy, absolutely unfair, both, or simply bonkers. It's not at all meant for a serious 100% playthrough of a mapset. Literally anything can happen, which is what makes it a fun mod, and it should be treated as such. I personally think this should have been out there with the other mentions, but given that this year was also big for gameplay mods - so much so to feature four golden gameplay awards in a year for the first time - and given that they are probably the second most produced projects in the community right after mapsets, even with a team of two gameplay award writers, @Kinsie and @Cardboard Marty, it's possible to cover only so many amazing gameplay mods when the input is so big every year. Huge respect for both of you for going through a grand list of mods this year! Here's links to the fantastic projects I mentioned above:

  10. Euroboros Community Session - Week #72: Broadsword Jim Eviternity Co-op (Pt. 2) Hello everyone! This week in ECS (and indeed for Doom's 30th birthday!) we are continuing our Co-op playthrough of Eviternity with the Broadsword Jim mod! There's a new update to Broadsword Jim based on the feedback from our last session, including a multitude of bug fixes! The session commences tomorrow on Sunday, December 10th 2023, at 7PM CET / 1PM EST! Disclaimer: We're starting earlier than usual because I have to partake in John Romero's livestream moderation when he does his talk with John Carmack for Doom's 30th birthday! That starts at 9PM CET, so we'll have 2 hours of continuing Eviternity, but we likely wont finish it this time either so we'll continue again later. Broadsword Jim is a gameplay mod created by Marian Paddock and Skelegant, featuring cartoony melee-heavy combat with unique firearms which are scarce in ammunition, encouraging the use of the players' heads - literally! - to slice the enemies in half! All weapons have alt-fires, including the player's sword-for-head, adding to the already multiple ways of killing monsters! The official website of Broadsword Jim can be found here! We combine this fun and unique mod with the brilliant maps of Eviternity, map project lead by Dragonfly which released on Doom's 25th birthday in 2018 and received a 2019 Cacoward! Eviternity's maps are detailed with the beautiful OTEX texture pack by Ukiro, which has influenced a few dozen projects more still to this day to use the same textures!   12. Euroboros Community Session - Week #71: Freon Deathmatch Hello everyone! This week in ECS we are playing Deathmatch in the maps of the latest beta version 4 of Freon Deathmatch! We're also combining the maps with the Eon Weapons deathmatch mod, which FreonDM is primarily built for! The session commences tomorrow on Sunday, December 3rd 2023, at 8PM CET / 2PM EST! Freon Deathmatch is a work-in-progress deathmatch mapset for Zandronum by members of the Ru5ty Sh4ck group Ru5tK1ng, Razgriz, Hatedaddy, and guest mappers Rivi and MajorArlene! The set currently consists of 19 cold and snowy modern deathmatch layouts fitting for the winter season. The maps are primarily built around Ru5tK1ng's Eon Weapons deathmatch mod, featuring amped-up versions of most classic Doom weapons, such as a faster chaingun, more accurate and deadlier shotgun, and faster moving rockets and plasma; three weapons that bring the spirit of arena-FPS games like Quake to classic Doom: the grenade launcher, railgun and lightning gun; and three new gimmicky weapons that make their debut in FreonDM: the flamethrower, laser chaingun, and freeze rifle! Stats for all the Eon Weapons can be found here! The mod also revamps the armor system to match the style of certain arena-FPS games, such as Quake and Quake 2. There are now four armor types, from weakest to strongest: Green, Blue, Yellow and Red. Stronger armor can also be replenished with weaker armor, but still gives less armor than what the same type would give. This week in ECS we are playing Deathmatch in the maps of the recently released Culling Strike deathmatch mapset, created by the Hellforge community! The session commences tomorrow on Sunday, November 12th 2023, at 8PM CET / 2PM EST! Your Zandronum is required to be on hardware (OpenGL) mode for this session! A lot of models and skyboxes are used, which don't render in software mode. Culling Strike is a Zandronum deathmatch map project lead by Xenaero and maps made by a lot of talented mappers in the Hellforge community! The mapset uses Supercharge as its choice for weapons and items, and consists of 31 of the most modern and beautiful Zandronum UDMF deathmatch layouts, decorated with the astonishing Makkon textures. This includes the brilliant work of Bridgeburner, Exl, Chester, Cyano, Guardsoul, Insane Gazebo Jark, Kaapeli47, LordZergeant, Luca, MajorArlene, NotTyrone, Remmirath, RiviTheWarlock, Shakar-a'tar, SkeletronMK666, StormCatcher.77, Thanatos13, The Proverbial Gamer, and Volasaurus! Culling Strike was released on November 4th 2023, just a week ago from the release of this post! With its release, modern deathmatch layouts just got even more modern, to the point of lots models and skyboxes used, so Culling Strike isn't compatible with ye olde software mode!     Insanity Deathmatch version 1.21

    @XoumanI also want to add that the mod doesn't have any maps of its own. I use a myriad of mapsets that I think work the best not only for the mod, but for deathmatching in general today. Huge shoutouts to the mappers who made the maps for all the sets used!
  18. Insanity Deathmatch version 1.21 is available! This update is hopefully the last one for Zandronum 3.1! I will develop the next version on the 3.2 betas to support the Zandronum developers in finishing the 3.2 update! This update mainly features a whole bunch of balance changes and fixes made in Deathmatch and other different gamemodes. Additionally, the Heat Seeker spawns again in every mode except Duel and LMS. It was meant to be removed from Duel, but accidentally got removed from all gamemodes. Oops. The Skinnable Edition's Skin Packs have a lot of new skins once again! And as always, there are tons of more gibbing sounds, death explosions, and naturally insanity! Full changes in IDMChangelog.txt in the downloadable zip files! Insanity Deathmatch is a multiplayer PK3 mod for Zandronum 3.1 or newer, featuring: 53 new and heavily improved weapons for frantic deathmatch massacre! 12 different starting weapons! 21 total big weapons which randomly spawn on the BFG9000 spot! 8 new special armor types and 17 different whacky powerups! Random spawns for each thing mentioned above, making each game of deathmatch unique even on the same map! Tons of fun chaos and ridiculousness in the form of over 1100 random gibbing sounds and 35 different player death explosions! Compatible on any Doom II multiplayer map on Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Duel, Last Man Standing, Team Last Man Standing, and even Capture the Flag! Also compatible with the Instagib and Buckshot modifiers! Comes with 12 additional gameplay modifiers, which by default have a rare chance to activate at the start of each match! These modifiers include several weapon-only modifiers, but also modifiers that change gameplay behavior! Insanity Deathmatch is not supposed to be anything competitive (although I invite those people to try it, too, and also give opinions on its eligibility for competitive play!), but more of a deathmatch carnage type mod meant for an InsaneTM amount of fun!     Insanity Deathmatch version 1.21

    Hey, thanks for playing! I'm glad to hear you've enjoyed it! Most of the assets such as sounds and sprites are by other people and from other games or Doom projects, which are all properly credited under IDMCredits.txt; but the programming is very much mostly done by one person, which would be me! :D So this has been majorly a solo-developed multiplayer project, and I've very much enjoyed working on it myself! Next update of Insanity Deathmatch, which would be version 1.3, will focus on the features of Zandronum's next version 3.2 and will only be playable on that version. I've already had test versions of it running on Zandronum 3.2-alpha servers, which I assume you've also very likely played! One of the new features includes a slightly customized scoreboard with an additional frag-death-ratio column, a new big weapon, a few additional death explosions, tons of more gibbing sounds, and much more! Stay tuned for that one when Zandronum 3.2 releases!

  22. Euroboros Community Sessions - Week #68: Insanity Survival SF2012 Co-op Greetings! This week in ECS we are playing Co-op and testing the latest beta of Insanity Survival v0.92 in the maps of Slaughterfest 2012! The session commences tomorrow on Sunday, November 5th 2023, at 8PM CET / 2PM EST! Insanity Survival is a work-in-progress gameplay mod for the co-op modes of Zandronum! Based on Insanity Deathmatch and developed by the same author, @Kaapeli47, Insanity Survival shares most of its weaponry, armor, and powerups and randomizes them in a similar fashion. Additionally, Insanity Survival adds several battalions of new monsters, and categorically randomizes them so the difficulty is tipped sometimes slightly, and sometimes Insanely, by different monster variants of the Doom II bestiary! Monsters have a chance to drop ammo to compensate for the high health of stronger monster variants. Certain monsters can also gib, and when they do, they have a rare chance to spawn a monster smaller than them, or a Resurrector, a resurrect-only Archvile! Additionally, some classic Doom II monsters can be Doppelgangers in disguise! Doppelgangers can transform into most Doom II monsters, and will only die in their original form! We will play the latest beta of Insanity Survival v0.92 in the frantic and challenging maps of Slaughterfest 2012, the second megawad in the community slaughtermap series created by General Rainbow Bacon! The Boom-compatible SF2012 is a magnificent and very popular choice for some fun co-op slaughter.   25. Euroboros Community Sessions - Week #67: Dynamite Deathmatch Hello everyone! This week in ECS we are playing Skulltag Deathmatch in the maps of Dynamite Deathmatch! The session commences tomorrow on Sunday, October 29th 2023, at 8PM CET / 3PM EST! Dynamite Deathmatch is a Skulltag deathmatch mapset created by RottKing in 2006, consisting of 12 medium sized maps. Although designed for Skulltag, most of the maps have a very vanilla Doom styled gameplay. Standard Doom 2 weapons like the shotguns and the chaingun still dominate the playfield, but there are a couple miniguns, grenade launchers and railguns on all 12 maps, as well as a new sword melee weapon! DynamiteDM achieved a Cacoward for the best Deathmatch mapset of 2006!
