I first played Doom at some point in the mid 90s, with god mode on and frequent use of IDKFA. Teenage me just wanted to blast demons and enjoy the "realistic 3D world" without worrying about health or locked doors.

About 20 years later, I started playing "for real", slowly making my way through Doom 1&2 on UV, finally appreciating the weapon balance and monster design. I was ready to dive into the world of pwads just as Sigil was released, so that was my first non-commercial wad. From there, I have been exploring wads both old and new, always looking for something to challenge my slowly improving skills. I prefer to play one wad repeatedly until I know all of its nooks and crannies rather than blast through several of them just so I can say I played through them. I'll never catch up with the huge backlog of "must play" wads anyway.
