  1. Going Down

       2019

I don't have anything new to say that hasn't been said already about this wad, it's simply muah *chef's kiss ok hand* perfection. It blends great environments with sadistic, almost nerve-racking combat encounters. A beautiful, whimsical & twisted good time.

  2. Doom 2 Redux

       2356

A fun recreation of Doom II's OG levels. Most maps are pretty decent, steps up more in the challenge, and gives a feeling of deja-vu in these reimagined yet familiar maps. I would dare say this is an underrated release that came out of 2017, a year that was really popping off in Doom content.

However, my praise of this megawad ends there. The reason why I didn't give it a higher rating is b/c even though the author of the wad says it's a boom megawad in the thread, some maps seem like they've been tested only in zdoom-based ports b/c some have some softlocks in certain areas of maps if you're not playing in a ZDoom port. The midis are awful, I went into SLADE myself to take em out b/c I couldn't stand em anymore.

Otherwise, it's an okie-dokie wad. Play it in GZDoom as a word of caution, maybe load in some mods if you wish to spice things up a bit, too.

  3. The Rebirth

On second thought, this wad is kinda mid if you ask me. After playing through all of it on pistol-start I wasn't really blown away by it. The midi pack that was made for this in 2020 was very nice if you ask me, but why this wad ever deserves a midi pack when it's so bland is what makes me scratch my head. Idk man, I didn't like this one as much as others do :/.

  4. After clearing out DTWiD you already know I had to cap it off by going after it's lil bro, D2TWiD. To sum it up: this is a solid 7/10, it's an alright megawad that improves upon DTWiD. Less mazey and confusing, more open areas ripe for exploring and a good sense of progression. I never felt like I got lost a lot or levels tended to drag on and overstay their welcome. Coupled with the fact that I paired it up w/ Mid the way id did (honestly for those who haven't checked it out I highly recommend it) b/c it lacks a proper midi soundtrack, it was a fun time. Just like I said about DTWiD, this won't go on my "must play" recommendation list b/c it didn't really blow my mind, but it was nice little time killer. It's essentially, "hey you liked DOOM II's maps? Well here's some more of where that came from" and I feel like it got the job done right.

Map 28 sucked tho, did not like that map. Regardless, the whole megawad is neat if you're curious about playing it :).

  5. Zone 300

Bite sized review for a bite sized wad: if you're ever feeling tired of exploration type wads, crank this baby out to sit back and relax. Even on pistol-starting, it's a fun romp of 33 levels that you can ask for. Music is cool, too.

  6. Upon the release of The Ultimate Midi Pack for Doom 1 that replaces all midi slots w/ original compositions, I thought to myself "Hell Yeah, now I have an excuse to play DTWiD!". Besides the shameless plug, I would recommend everyone to give that pack a listen and perhaps a spin w/ this wad b/c god damn does it go together like peanut butter and nutella.

Onto DTWiD: Well, the people behind this wad accomplished the goal of mimicking the style of John Romero, Sandy Petersen, and last but not least Tom Hall. Every level breathes like it was made by any of the three gentlemen, and god damn I had a blast w/ this one. While certainly not as hard as your Plutonia, Rowdy Rudy 1+2, Hell To Pay, or even Good Morning Phobos, it has its own moments where it doesn't pull its punches. However, one of my main gripes w/ this wad is that there's a lot of secrets to find if you're a completionist like I am, as some of them are a bit tricky to hunt down. The maps are way bigger than the OG John, Sandy, and Tom Hall levels, and while it's great to mesh some good fights here and there, it at times felt like a slog to go through b/c of the size of some of these maps. E1 was the weakest in terms of fights here, as expected that you won't be fighting anything tougher than hitscan, imps, and pinkies. While the design was great, I admittedly got lost a few times trying to get my bearings and know just where the hell I need to go. E2 was a bigger improvement upon E1, and had a few moments where it was spooky, like things are really beginning to hit the fan. E3 (which unironically in the OG UD was my least fav episode that I couldn't even bring myself to finish) was probably the best episode of the bunch, everything was oppressive and coming for you, luckily there was an abundance of ammo to help you out in messy situations, more traps and better set ups than what E2 had and a way better episode than E1. The secret levels of all 3 episodes are the highlight of the wad.

While I wouldn't say that this wad is a "must play" b/c over time I started to get a bit exhausted on the size of some of the levels and figuring out where I need to go, and especially since I binged E1, E2, and E3 3 days each respectively, I had my moments where I was like "Please God let this be over". Overall, I would say this is more of a wad that if you really wanna check out, go for it, or a good recommendation for people who are just beginning their journey of playing community wads and want something ez to play.

  7. Revolution!

As it's been said before, a pretty damn ez wad. Even on pistol-start, it's not that challenging, and it's a great wad for beginners. I liked the environment of some of the levels, and the midi pack that accompanies this slaps. Give this a try, won't take you longer than 5 hours to complete it.
