How do you think you improved at mapping over time?

I have been mapping on and off for a long time, though took a very long break and only lately been getting back into it. I used to level for quake 2, quake 3, quake 4, doom 3, half life, godot and unreal, At first,I always was too ambitious with my ideas. I learned to scale back my ideas and start simple then expand out. The point of the map is fun game play not looks. I would get so caught up in making it look perfect, that I would neglect how it plays. I find figuring out mapping programs easy, but what is hard, is the artist talent and being able to make quick decisions on map flow and direction and being able to make something with a certain feel, or style. It is so much easier designing levels the more gaming experience you have. when making them you think, if I was gaming, what direction would I expect to go in, what feels comfortable, what kind of flow is needed. From playing years of online shooters I am very thoughtful of corners, lines of sight, kill corridors, player flow and movement methods players use. Some times I over detail places in trying to flex my artistic talent, but then I have to remove detail as the room or scene becomes too cluttered and busy. gotta find that fine line between wow that looks awesome and "damn, there is just too much to look at". Some times less is more.

    Need playtesters

Trim = Border Trim textures means border textures. so instead of a flat one texture wall make a beam of wood or something looking at each end, and in the middle, and set the top and bottom of the line to be border textures, then you will have a much much better wall.

ya, texture work is pretty basic. Good starting of something, but needs polish. Small amounts of detail go A LONG way in breaking up square rooms. change floor height in rooms more. even if only by a small amount, make a few steps down, an area, few steps up, create borders to things that are very slightly raised off the wall. at texture seems that look ugly, or don't quite line up, use detail to cover it up. the walls seem extremely plain. You need more subtle details like borders, or sunk in hole with screens, or lighting decorations, something to break up the large area of one single texture. It is not pleasing to many people to look at the same texture covering a large area.. need to at least have some beams and colloums here and there to break up things. Monster placement and item placement I am only going to touch on, because it can take months of fine tuning to get those right, but need more low end monsters at the start. to much of no fighting at the start. I get it, you want to build atmosphere, but even one or 2 random dudes to break it up would have been nice... started feeling like doom3 with so long before first fight :P over all (not totally done wad yet, got a small taste) from what I see, the areas you most need to work on, are fine simple details. Break up large walls. Try not to have anywhere large areas of the same texture... you got the ideas, you got the art direction and theme choices.

I am down for a group project. any themes ideas on it? medieval, sci fi, hell, city? I am starting up a bunch of maps, (I hate working on the same map for too long, like to have many on the go) and my plan is to make 1 nice room for each map, then post screenshots and what ever once gets voted is what I will work on next, so I want to know if there is any styles to add to the list right now im working on a prison map, then im working on an outdoor cave and mountain path map, then a science lab, then a volcano area, then im making a snes game in doom (not full thing, just some deathmatch levels, some areas from chrono trigger)

I just finished my first map, working on my second one, check it out, im getting into wadding, mapping, going to learn everything I can, right now im focusing on just mapping, but soon will focus on custom weapons and monsters. What kind of project are you thinking of? Ive been thinking of a few random ideas 1) basic project with magic weapons, (fire earth water and wind) and corresponding secrets, monsters, levels that can be re played once you get magic weapons and can unlock further areas to go. Simple ending you can get with a quick run through, and a secret ending level when you unlock all magic weapons. Monsters would drop monster bits and magic shards, which can be used to make ammo, armor and powerups. This project would work on custom monsters, weapons, textures, tiered levels, a center hub town level 2) I randomly want to create a few death match levels from SNES games, could create custom snes characters to play as, snes enemies and make it a project 3) re create chrono trigger in Doom? 4) joke wad 5) other??

    up coming maps and projects

Hey, just listing of my intended projects I am going to work on. I just finished the first map of my first WAD project. It is going to be a 4, to 6 map wad pack. Nothing custom, as it is my first project, want to get comfortable with base assets. The story of my first pack, the Fall of Taras Nabad, is about how the sentinels betrayed the doom slayer to make a pact with the demons, who in turn where betrayed, forcing the DOOM slayer to have to kill everyone. Level 1 will be escape from prison / exile, - will be extremely old school doom in level design and thought process. level 2 is the level I have released Taras Nabad level 3 will be pathway from Taras Nabad temple, to a volcano. -Jungle, swamp, cave, pathway areas. Will be a very linear map, about moving forward in one direction and not really about exploring. I want to use many different textures as possible and get a good feeling of best locations and situations to use each texture. level 4 will be a volcano, which will have a entrance to a base inside it- going to learn custom sky boxes, how to make fire balls fall from the sky. Level 5 will be the Base in that Volcano where the Maykers first gave sentinels Technology, and a naturally occurring portal to hell, which is why the base was built there. This level is large scale tech facility. It is going to focus on all the tech style assets, and have lots of moving floors, rooms that move and open up revealing new places to go, and will have a few puzzles to figure out. Level 6 Hell on the other side of the portal. I will create a custom enemy called The Hell Priest, and a powered up version of it called the Hell Arch Bishop. The Hell Arch Bishop will teleport the player during his death in an attempt to slow him down from reaching his goal of killing the Hell Royal elite. The level will end in a copy of the starting area of the first level of doom 1. My second wad I am planning right now, will have custom everything, and will be a large scale project one of which I will be asking for help for in the future. Right now the best way I can explain the idea for this wad is this kinda like Mega man X games, where when you beat a boss and get its power, you can go back to old levels and get secrets and stuff.... The way im going to make my maps, is I am going to make 1 room from each, and make and post screenshots. I will make the room in the style I want to make the level in, and what ever people want to see more of, Ill make :D I have been considering just making the map I have a part of this second project... this second project is actually why I am mapping, my first one is just something small to get to know mapping.... was meant to be the earth temple, and I was going to have earth magic monsters in it... I started making this game a while a go in GODOT, but after discovering how easy it is to make doom wads, I felt it easier to make the game in DOOM then make it in Godot after... Godot is not the easiest thing to learn while working on a project....
  13. someone who only has ideas, no skills, nothing to back em, no prior experience, no knowledge, no patients, no class, no social skills, but they do have ideas I am not trying to insult, or be mean, but from the very first post, this Jason guy has been hostile and negative "I will ignore anyone who tells me I should learn" - ok, when making a post, as a new member to a community, you should not start off by telling them how you will ignore them if give the WRONG help. Then people point out his flaws, and reasons this project will have issues, not to be mean or insulting, but because it is the truth, and he gets defensive and says everyone is insulting him. He obviously does not want to work WITH others, but DOMINIATE others and use HIS ideas, and take GLORY AND CREDIT for the work, while all he did was tell someone some ideas. I have helped many people start companies and I have dealt the IDEA people a lot. One time I helped my friend start a delivery company. He then lost his license and had me do ALL the work for a year under the understanding it was both our company %50 / %50. But the moment he got his license back, no it was ALL his, and he was the main idea guy. so the company was his. Even though I made the logo, I made the web site, I made the car logo designs, I made the price lists for the stores, I made the business cards, I designed the outfits, and the food bags, no, none of that mattered, the original ideas where his, so EVERYTHING was his. He refused to learn any of the software needed to do that. I learnt it all even though I didn't know. The whole time all he did was get drunk and party. I have been tricked into starting up a few different companies with this same story... IDEA guy does nothing, but wants FULL CONTROL, then someone DOES EVERYTHING and in the end gets nothing, not even proper credit. No Jason, what you seek, is you want to be an apprentice to a mapper. You want to help make maps, but know nothing of it. You think you got some great ideas that would make good levels, but instead of follow the path you should, which is seek mapping help, and o be a HELPER of a mapper and work with someone learning wadding, and bringing your ideas to life, you approach it as if you are superior, you have the answers, and you need people to answer to you. You make a postion of being in control and in change, when in fact, you cant even make a simple door. How dare you demand people with skills you don't have do things for you, then accuse them of insulting you when they don't like being treated like a fool to be used. Had you made this a post asking for an experienced mapper to spend time with you, and work with you, I would have took you up on it, as I am right now thinking of making a WADDING GROUP and working on a larger project as I am now confident in my mapping abilites, but when you spend more time telling people how you will ignore them if they do not do exactly what you want... meh ill pass
