  1. After playing my same peice of crap geetar for 3 years now, I finally put a down payment on a new guitar. About a week ago, my roommates and I were browsing a pawn shop, doing things like buying Glocks and Trumpets, when I saw a pretty Jackson Randy Rhoads V on the wall. However, the $600 price tag made the $239 white Flying V sitting next to it a whole lot prettier.
I took it down, plugged it in, and was greeted with a tone that a generic guitar found in a pawn shop does not deserve. I played a few metallica songs while the guy behind the counter told me how much they sucked at a show in Cincinatti this year, played some random Ozzy riffs (which no one recognized), and played a few doom-ey riffs (d_shawn, and e1m1, which was recognized by another guy browsing stuff \m/), and fell in love.
I took it back to the counter, sad and broke. 3 days passed, I got paid, and the guitar was still hanging in the shop when I went back yesterday. I took it down, played 'Sad But True', and asked if I could put a down payment on it. The guy behind the counter took $39 off of the asking price of the guitar, giving me an even $200 to pay, before tax. I gave hime $30 for a down payment, leaving me about $200 to pay, including tax.
If I didn't have to lend some dough to my roommates to help cover bills, I'd be in the garage right now with the guitar until my fingers bled :) Ah well. When they pay me back, I get my guitar :D

I assume you started on an acoustic? No offense, but if you start out playing an electric guitar, that's all you'll ever be able to play. I never got what was so cool about flying V design, by the way. I've always been about plain black or sunburst. ~$200, though, is pretty good. My Ovation acou/elec set me back over $400, even after trading my crappy generic guitar. Fortunately, I got a payment plan on Guitar Center's credit card, so I don't have to make payments until... OH CRAP!!!

      1) I started on an electric, but I play an acoustic all the time! Actually, I've got my roommate's red acoustic (a 'SoundPort') sitting in the corner of my room right now... I've been practicing a few songs on it since we moved all the 'lectric stuff out to the garage.

      2) Although it was the sound of the guitar more than anything that made me want to buy it, twas probably Kirk Hammett that made me like the body design :P

      3) My old neighbor used to have a similar, if not exact, Ovation acoustic guitar. The only difference I can spot is that his was blue instead of red. Brand new, he only paid $220 for it!

  4. I'm listening to the CD I got by The Martian a while back right now. It's in the style of Detroit Techno, which is extremely hard to come by. One thing I'm noticing is how complex this music is, while also being quite beautiful. The song I'm listening to now specifically (Sex in Zero Gravity) has some rather complex layered polyrhythmic parts. We have the traditional 4-on-the-floor kick drum with a slight frill here and there, standard high-hat pattern for techno, snare hits on 2 and 4, 808 toms, a background arpeggio part, another background countermelody, bass part, pad, an odd rhythmic part, a melodic xylophone part, an odd thin synth, and a xylophone-like part that's almost soloing over this. Each of these parts has a different rhythm, yet all of them fit together seamlessly and perfectly. At the same time, the song is presenting itself in a light mood, one that is upbeat and lively, while still retaining its techno roots.

These dichotomies are apparent all through the genre. The more I listen to it, the more I realize how important it was to the development of electronica. Another interesting dichotomy I noticed straight away on the first track, which has no percussion track, is the combination of nature meets technology. It reminds me alot of Turok (or at least what I played of the original). These dichotomies are something I think I would like to look into as I write music more. I'd also like to look more into polyrhythms.

Given that I just started a new song in Reason, perhaps I can flesh it out with these...I hate to have to use a software synth, but since all my hardware's back home I have no other choice.

Anyone else have any ideas on this?

Kinda irrelevant reply here, but I beleive that the most thoughtful description of techno ANYTHING that I've ever read. Before, I pretty much considered techno to be about as deep as my roommate seems when she listens to it... "omg THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP UP! AND DOWN! AND UP! AND DOWN!"

      Or something.

Point being, I'm kinda inspired to download the music now, if I get a free chance today.

  7. Well, MAP04 of Intent2, the first I'm working on since the year-and-a-half hiatus, is comin g on nicely. Did anybody every use the Boom "translucent flats" trick that I helped to discover? I have, and there are some real purrrty looking ceiling windows done with it; it's a real nice decorative trick that works well with ceilings and, to a lesser extent, floors (I've experimented).

MAP04 is, as yet, very light on theme, since I'm working most on layout, although there is a central area that looks like a parade ground, maybe I'll call it a barracks or something.

Some nice Q2-inspired details in places, and already a secret area (Easy to figure).

I'll probably use some of the new textures I recently did in this level, too... already used a couple of new flats.

Should I put a cybie in this map, or wait till MAP07?...? There's the space, but maybe I should have the player pummel a legion of Cacos or somrthing. I should write music for this map, too. None of what I've got suits it... actually I might rewrite the lot, save for the MAP02 and MAP03 tunes... they're cool enough.

Non-Doom wise, I just got SOnic Advance 3. Completed it in a day :|. Sonic Advance 2 still rox my sox... maybe I should do something Sonic-inspired... ;)

The funny part is-- if Tobe actually committed suicide, we would all interpret this as a "cry for help", we'd see these responses as a "failure to reach out to him", and we'd all try to "honor his memory" somehow.

I'm not so sure. The idea is that none of that WOULD happen.

But let's face it, he's right. Not only him, but I could think of at least a hundred people I've talked to online whose death wouldn't affect me in the least.

I think part of what bothers me is that there would probably be more online people I know that would give a shit if I croaked than people IRL that I know.

      • Survived on AOL for nine months until I got DSL (and downloaded 46 gigs of porn in two weeks, only 28 of which ive actually beaten off to)
      • Saw my rich grandmother from California for the first time in 13 years or so
      • Gotten my hair cut properly for the first time in 3 years or so
      • Joined and lost a drunken footrace against a Navy seaman on leave
      • Gotten a boat
      • Gotten $10 for free from my bank in a mix-up while withdrawing
