Didn't I suggest this on Doomworld a few months ago? I got to RIT, home of NTID, the National Technical Institute for the Deaf. I had always thought that closed captions in video games were for deaf people already. Anyway this is a very good thing, but iD should be scolded severely for not originally including subtitles. Same with the makers of other games when non-trivial voice is used.

In the 50/60's it wasn't uncommon for actors appearing in bad scifis to commit suicide. That's right, your favorite MST3K episode has blood on its hands. Actually I think the whole thing is pretty funny.

If someone invented a technology which unleashed monsters on the Earth, we would call those monsters demons, and we would call where they are from "Hell". This is human nature by default. Also "Hell" and "devils" are literary devices. The fact that they made "Hell" look like some of the fan-fiction based off the bible although not like others (Dante's Inferno, anyone?) doesn't make it a religiously binding experience. As mentioned the only symbol is the pentagram which is hardly binding either. It has had many different meaning throughout history. The Babylionians used it as a compass (showing fowards, backwords, left, right, and up). The corners mean Jupiter, Mercury, Mars, Saturn and Venus according to astrology, Mars being the upper point (hint?). As for the Christian relationship it was originally tied to the crucifixion, marking each wound. Later on the chruch (I don't know which, probably catholisism) decided to turn it into a "satanic symbol". However the most prevailent use was in ancient Greece where each point stood for things in a mix of philosophy and mythology. If you want to convince me that this is Christian Hell (hehe) I'm going to need to see something other than a pentagram. Unless there is any specific reference to Christ, this cannot be the case. Does a single voice over state that you cannot be saved? As for the threat to owning the player's soul forever, that's simply the transformation into a "demon". The Borg do that :) Addition: If you want to decide it's Christian Hell, fine. I have no reason to decide that and I enjoyed my experience with the game just fine. If deciding that this game is Biblical ruins your experience, just remember it's your call, whether you want to admit it or not. :-)

The problem with genres is you can only have one. For genres that are commonly bridged, a new genre is formed (a la Action-Adventure). On Underdogs, Doom3 would probably be classified as "Horror, Science Fiction" with a genre of FPS. What I was trying to say was to refute what I perceived as claims that the addition of any RPG element to the game would turn it into an RPG. I fully appreciate having choices to make and I don't believe it affects the genre at all. I just suck at talking, that's all.

Any decent amount of non-linearity WILL add to the RPGness, but that isn't a bad thing. Say between levels you can buy/sell/barter ammos and weapons for other ammos and weapons. Is it now an RPG? What if you can hold your items instead of using them right away and use them later. Is it now an RPG? Say you have scripted conversations.. now an RPG? Unscriptected conversations.. now an RPG? To me RPG isn't really a genre in itself, but a rating. How RPG-like is a given game. Technically I'd say every genre is a fraud. http://www.the-underdogs.org/ refuse to use genres because they just don't make sense. Instead they apply any number of "Themes" to a game.

Gah! Just remember this isn't necessarily HELL hell. It's another dimension (read: planet far away) that is hellish (read: lots of fire and big scary monsters). This game is only as religious and YOU make it. For me this game has no religious context whatsoever.

By removing all guns before and after hell, you've effectively created a separate level. They could have made hell anything they wanted because of this. Heck, they could have done the whole game then thrown hell together at the last moment. OR they could have done hell before anything else. OR they could have done hell based on predetermined plans. I don't have any complaints because you get your weapons, and it's not overly difficult. Actually it's too easy. You could keep your guns and they could quadruple the monsters but I rather like my computer not being a pile of goo. Can you pile goo?

I don't want to be in hell naked. I can't imagine getting an imp fireball in the wiener.

What about that scream/yell at the academy in Starcraft? That's in movies all the time. Still the most stolen sound ever (well I'm sure doom stole it first) is the icon of sin spit. There must be literally a hundred movies with that sound in it now. Also TV shows. Someone somewhere apparently things it sounds like an explosion. There are plenty of other stolen sounds from games-- but I just don't know if the game stole it first. In Warcraft the cry from the dragon and griffin have been in movies. Not that any of this is a bad thing. It's pretty cool. We were watching some movie and I said "Hey, they stole that sound from the academy in Starcraft.". My roommate was disgusted that I recognized it. Then another one of my roommates came in, the sound played and he said "Hey, they stole that sound from the academy in Starcraft." It was my finest moment. Yeah I'm pathetic ;)

Just wait until you have a flashlight in RTS games.
