    Starting gear

What if the player doesn't know where to find the chainsaw or dies trying to get it? Note that you are not required to start with it either, it's an option ;-P

    Starting gear

I like the idea but I think it should be kept as simple as possible. On skills 1-3, if you die, you should have the option to "Restart with pistol" or "Start with extra gear". It should then proceed to give you a chainsaw, shotgun and chaingun with almost full ammunition (only on E#M8s would you get a RL or in Doom II, any level above Dead Simple). You should also spawn with blue armor but set at 100% durability. Perhaps the extra gear option should also bestow the full automap (including secrets) so that a novice player can have access to the full layout to better plan their route or remember where stuff like health and armor can be found. EDIT : to simplify the dialogue on death, it should merely prompt you : "Need some help?" and you can answer yes or no.

    Doom Builder 2 Released

I think CodeImp rocks and all, and Doombuilder is great, but it still boggles my mind that Doombuilder 2 requires such relatively powerful hardware compared to the game it is editing. In fact, the requirements are close to the requirements for Doom 3.

I like it using the pistol sound, as it basically is a super-pistol and eats the same ammo. As an aside, I had a non-suppressed TMP model for Counter-Strike back in the day and I used the Doom pistol sound for it, it was pretty damn good.

  9. I've had that thing sitting in a drawer for a few years, a few days ago I decided to mess with it. Well, it was acting like some keys were stuck, so I figured "I'll just hook up an external keyboard." Well, it was still acting like a whore, so I decided to just tear out the offending keys. That did not work.

I decided to try and take it apart and took all the screws out. Turns out there's two screws UNDERNEATH THE KEYBOARD HOLDING IT TOGETHER. Arg. So, finally, I grab the nearest tools and get to work. A screwdriver and an AK bayonet. Pried that bastard right off and now it works great.

At first it wasn't running with accelerated graphics, but a quick trip to Google supplied me with the drivers directly from HP, turns out it's a 64mb ATI card. Anyway, it's a decent gaming rig, but it has shut down randomly twice while playing Opposing Force (I have a CD copy from the Half-Life Platinum pack). Anyway, I manually installed XP Service Packs 2 and 3 from CDs due to no intrawebs on that, yet. My cable ISP offers dial-up access numbers, so I may take advantage of that and use dial-up upstairs during non-phone hours.

Games I have on it so far :

Action Doom 2 (FUCK YEAH, SCUBA!!)
All the Doom games w/ GZDoom
ZSNES and a bunch of ROMS
    GBA emu and roms
Half-Life, Blue Shift and Opposing Force
    Starcraft + Expansion
    WCII : BNE
    Quake 1-3
    Duke Nukem 3d
    Shadow Warrior

What's wrong with that? I always use a pad. I hate moving mice across plastic, wood, or pretty much anything that isn't cloth-covered rubber foam.

    3. Danarchy

Yeah, I ended up using an old notebook as a mousepad after my cursor kept freaking out while going over small divots in my wooden desk.

Don't worry, us Americans get the same when trying to view BBC videos.

  11. It came in a sealed tin inside the crate, got that sucker opened up and took the boxes out. 40 boxes of 20 7.62x54r cartridges. They were made in 1986, the same year I was born! Cost me $150 + $27 S&H. That beast in the pic is a Mosin Nagant rifle.

      Very happy ammo added!

I just need to finish up 1 tiny detail. There's small differences between Saiga and AK magazines, to rectify this, I must install a feed ramp and shave down some metal on the mag catch to use AK magazines. So basically, just imagine the above with this on it :

This is a Saiga 7.62x39 rifle, made in Russia. With the complete of this conversion, it's technically US-made now, so it's a Russian-American AK rifle. Can't beat that.

    1. Naked Snake

I got some NY legal 30 round mags on the way, soon the rifle will be complete.

    3. Naked Snake

      Naked Snake

It was a long and hard road, but it's done :

It now will feed properly from standard AK magazines instead of the Saiga-specific magazines. I got 420 rounds on the way, can't wait to get all these mags loaded up and go off shooting :-D

  20. A couple weeks ago, I dropped $99 for an AR-15 lower receiver. Note, this isn't the one I ordered, just a visual representation of what it is :

I called yesterday and it turns out that they oversold their stock, so I have to wait until they get their next batch in. This is a big pain in the ass, because this is the critical part and the only part of the gun that can't be shipped directly to my door, so I may get the rest of the rifle (upper receiver assembly, lower parts kit and a buttstock) before the actual firearm itself (under Federal law, since it is the serial #ed part, it is the firearm).

You can't fucking compare Bush to any of those monsters.

I'd only start to compare him to Adolf, mostly because the other two were evidently individuals with more intelligence and initiative (or balls). Morally it's hard to compare them, as their contexts are so different. Put Bush in a country in true turmoil (such as during the US civil war), especially in a real war-time situation (and no, Afghanistan and Iraq don't count; those were just one-sided skirmishes compared to wars where powers smash each other to pieces), and we'd have to see.

If the US would really have gone to shit somehow I get the impression Bush would have been set aside even more visibly than he was during his presidency, perhaps with Cheney saying the equivalent of "step aside boy, it's time for real men to get the guns crackin'!"

      Creaphis said:
What I was trying to say is that I don't think somebody who does justify armed revolution will ever manage to take power in the USA, at this point. Despite all stereotypes, the average American IS smart enough not to elect Hitler. There are enough educated Americans for their knowledge to permeate society; it would take centuries of enforced ignorance before we could forget the basic lessons learned in WW2, the Civil War, etc. In case someone somehow slips through the cracks, or only shows his true colours later on, there are enough levels of government full of people with enough good sense to oust someone especially dangerous.

Again, before you can judge that as a comparison, the US would have to be in a similar situation to Germany after the Great War, plus suffer a pretty bad economic crisis. We might be having the latter, but that's only half (or less) of the problem*. I assure you, sense in a society can go out the window in the blink of an eye in the same way an apparently sane person can "snap" in an ugly situation. I'd say that if there's something keeping bloody tyranny away in the US, it's a certain lack of conflict or imbalance, more than any sort of spiritual guarantee due to the "uprightness" or "education" of the people.

      * Hopefully, at least. Economic crises are known to often lead to pretty ugly climaxes.

I think to tide myself over, I will get an antique Finnish Mosin-Nagant M39 rifle. It can be shipped right to my door because the receiver was made before 1899. Despite this, they are just as strong, reliable and accurate as my Russian Mosin-Nagant M91/30 made in 1927, or a Polish Mosin M44 carbine made in 1952.

This specific rifle, which I hope to get (or one like it) was acquired by Finland through various means (capture in warfare, purchased / trade with other countries that had Mosins). They got heaps and heaps of Mosins and ravaged them, replacing the sights, stock and barrels to their specifications, as well as other modifications. The receiver is this part :

The pic is pretty big in terms of image size so I am URLing to it

They did not make their own receivers, they only used salvaged ones. These rifles more than likely saw use during Finland's defense against Russia during the Winter War / Continuation War.

You have to admit, that is awesome, a piece of history that can be shipped to my door and can be used to harvest game.

The 12 gauge shotguns should be able to drop moose, elk, and blackbear at close range. The Mosin should be able to do the same at greater distance, although it will end up limited by the inherently poor accuracy.

Actually, Mosins are fairly accurate shooters.

Nope. Apparently, you've chalked up a rifle or a few rifles with poor bores to all Mosins being inaccurate. From the factory, Mosins were required to hit 3 out of 5 shots in a 1" group at 100 meters in order to be deemed fit for service, which is about as accurate as the K98k and M1 Garand.
