7.62x39 is smaller, therefore you can carry more.

7.62x39 is made for the ranges common in military engagements, .308 Winchester / 7.62x51 NATO is slightly over-powered for said role.

I can shoot it all day long without any problems, but if you shoot a lot of .308 you'll be feeling it tomorrow :-P

All that aside, I sure wouldn't mind a .308 rifle of some kind, probably another Saiga AK :-P

None said it ain't (with a southern accent), but even in non-communist USA it's getting harder to legally own a full-auto weapon "just for plinking" nowadays (at least in big cities). Don't you have the Patriot Act and ever-more restrictive gun control laws being passed everyday?

Besides, a good ole' pump shotgun with magnum buckshot is still the best home defense choice, IMO.

My rifle is semi-automatic only. The trigger has to be pulled for each shot.

      Also, I have a 20 gauge pump-action shotgun for home defense, I wouldn't use a rifle.

No. Let's do the math. I have 4 30 round magazines. That means, fully loaded, I have 120 rounds at the ready.

      120 x 5 = 600

So yeah, you can see that a trip to the range eats up ammunition like a bastard.

BTW, there's 760 rounds in that picture.

  4. My cousin has a coworker / friend named MM. Two weeks ago, my cousin and I hung out with MM 3 times in one week. Then MM found me on Myspace and asked me to hang out with her alone. So I did, everything was exactly the same as it would be with my cousin around. We talked, watched movies and I sat on the oposite side of the couch as MM. There was 4 feet of space between us. When I left, I gave her a hug, because I hug my friends.

Then the suggestive texts and myspace messages came from her. They were lines like, "If I get scared watching a movie, can I snuggle up with you?" Clearly she likes me, but I ignored those sort of statements completely, because I don't want to be more than friends.

She asked me over again the next day and I went with. I gave MM 20 minutes of warning I was bringing my cousin, because I was hanging out with my cousin already. On the way home I told my cousin MM likes me. My cousin asked if I like MM. I gave my cousin a non answer, but in reality, I like MM better as a friend.

All of MM's stories and tales are negative. I don't want to get between MM and my cousin's friendship / working relationship. MM and I might both be single, but being friends is just better.

MM asked me over the next day (Memorial Day), and I said "No, I'm hanging with my family." My family / cousin live 20 minutes away from MM. I live 60 minutes from MM. MM guilted me into seeing her. She said I was a jerk for teasing her that I was 20 minutes away and not coming over. I felt guilted into seeing her again. So I agreed to see her, and again I brought my cousin, because my cousin said she wanted to go to MM's anyway even if I wasn't going.

Yesterday I didn't see MM (thankfully), she told me she wants to be more than a friend. Yep, that's obvious. MM said she asked for my cousin's permission to persue me and if it would be weird or anything. My cousin gave permission (oh goody). I told MM that in life I'm very indescisive, so I'd just rather be friends.

I elaborated that indescisive means I'm never sure 100% what I want to do and it changes constantly. So the bottom line is that she may be an adorable blonde, but I only want to be friends with her and nothing more. MM wants to be more than friends, she wants to give "us" a try. I don't want to give "us" a try. I spent the entire day via text telling her that she'll just get hurt.

She would rather get hurt than not try. I gave her heaps of reasons. Reasons that put me in a negative light. I lie, I cheat and I half ass relationships. They're all facts. After I got used by one of my exes two years ago, I really don't care. When you're into someone you'd find any reason to be with them for a moment in your life. MM is no different.

The girl asked for me to at least give it a try before I shoot her down. She's never been attracted to someone in years, but I'm the one person that perked her interest. Maybe its because with my cousin around I've been a great guy instead of a jerk. Not that I'm a jerk, but I'm just on my best behavior.

I still said no. I'd rather say no than maybe, cause NO doesn't lead her on like maybe would.

Then MM said I lead her on. I hugged her and hung out with her 3 days in a row! That's a little silly I think. Leading her on would have been groping her and saying you're the only girl for me, I love you MM! Then say... just kidding!

I caved, I'm going to give her a try on a date that is in another day. I have a feeling that it will either end messy now or messy later. I'd like to pick the end messy now, but she's not going to let me.

This morning I woke up to a myspace message full of dumb web photos that say things like: I'd rather have loved and lost than never loved. I lost my life playing your game, but I have two left. If you were ever stung by a jellyfish, I'd pee on you.

I had to reply to her: Pick your spots. Fools rush in where wise men never tread.

I told my cousin all of this stuff, and my cousin says I should still go for MM and give it a try. My cousin knows all about going for guys that just want to be friends.

This forum has been very helpful in the past. This forum also lets me vent, cause she knows myspace. Any suggestions on what I should do?

  5. My birthday was the 21st, and it was definitely one of the better birthdays I have had. Got to go out to lunch with three good friends, and had a nice dinner with my parents. I also was able to link up with a guy to buy a rifle I have been actively seeking for six months (and desired for years), an FAL. The particular rifle I bought is built on a Brazilian IMBEL receiver with a mixture of British, Belgian, and Austrian parts (of the ones I was able to identify) and has Rhodesian markings on the trigger-housing assembly and bolt.

However, the best part of the day was receiving a letter accepting me as a doctoral student in Entomology at Iowa State University, with a concentration in Systematics. I start there January 2010 (I finish up my undergraduate degree in December).

Hell of a birthday present, that is.

  6. Ever since my car accident, I've been dreading inclement weather. And now it's spring, which I hated already but this is just about unbearable. They tell you that it's like arthritis; well, I hope I die before I get old. It's not a dull ache or even a discomfort. It's a sharp, stabbing pain. The same kind of irritating, throbbing pangs I dealt with when my ribs were mending. Ugh.

  7. I've had that thing sitting in a drawer for a few years, a few days ago I decided to mess with it. Well, it was acting like some keys were stuck, so I figured "I'll just hook up an external keyboard." Well, it was still acting like a whore, so I decided to just tear out the offending keys. That did not work.

I decided to try and take it apart and took all the screws out. Turns out there's two screws UNDERNEATH THE KEYBOARD HOLDING IT TOGETHER. Arg. So, finally, I grab the nearest tools and get to work. A screwdriver and an AK bayonet. Pried that bastard right off and now it works great.

At first it wasn't running with accelerated graphics, but a quick trip to Google supplied me with the drivers directly from HP, turns out it's a 64mb ATI card. Anyway, it's a decent gaming rig, but it has shut down randomly twice while playing Opposing Force (I have a CD copy from the Half-Life Platinum pack). Anyway, I manually installed XP Service Packs 2 and 3 from CDs due to no intrawebs on that, yet. My cable ISP offers dial-up access numbers, so I may take advantage of that and use dial-up upstairs during non-phone hours.

Games I have on it so far :

Action Doom 2 (FUCK YEAH, SCUBA!!)
All the Doom games w/ GZDoom
ZSNES and a bunch of ROMS
    GBA emu and roms
Half-Life, Blue Shift and Opposing Force
    Starcraft + Expansion

    Quake 1-3

I just need to finish up 1 tiny detail. There's small differences between Saiga and AK magazines, to rectify this, I must install a feed ramp and shave down some metal on the mag catch to use AK magazines. So basically, just imagine the above with this on it :

This is a Saiga 7.62x39 rifle, made in Russia. With the complete of this conversion, it's technically US-made now, so it's a Russian-American AK rifle. Can't beat that.

It was a long and hard road, but it's done :

It now will feed properly from standard AK magazines instead of the Saiga-specific magazines. I got 420 rounds on the way, can't wait to get all these mags loaded up and go off shooting :-D

You think you have what it takes to stand up to Unidoom in a game of Quake Live? Well I doubt it. We know you couldn't cut it in a game of Doom against us, so we're going to do you a favor and give you a shot in a fresh game. Here's the low down.

I have 10 Quake Live invites to pass out to whomever. If you want it, it's practically yours! There are a few things though:

    1) If you accept the invite you better use it and you better at least play a few games with the masters of the universe, Unidoom.

    2) Don't be lame.

With that said, if you want an invite let me know your email address and you are in the house.

  16. I was moved by BBG's latest thread to ask for some outside advice for my latest firearms purchase.

For reference, at this point I have a pair of .22 rifles, a pair of shotguns, plus .357mag and .22 handguns. I really enjoy shooting the handguns and the rifles. Right now I am looking for another gun that will run $500 or less. I want to get into centerfire rifle, particularly since it seems like the golden days of semi-auto rifles may be on the wane as surplus parts dry up and legislation is looming.

Ideally, I want an FAL rifle, but this doesn't look like it is going to happen. All of the affordable ones have been swept off the market by panic buying. I had a lead on a rifle, but the guy was looking for $800, which I simply don't have. Oh, and there is also the fact that I would never shoot it because .308 ammo is ridiculously expensive.

Anyway, here are my options as I see them:

    - My preferred shop has an Egyptian contract FN49 in 8mm for $500, and I could probably talk them down a bit in price. The FN49 was the predecessor of the FAL (the FAL can be thought of as an FN49 built to take detachable mags and use a pistol grip and stock attached to the trigger group). However, it is limited to a fixed 10 round magazine, and has quite a bit of finish wear (as you would expect to see on a 50 year old rifle that served in Egypt).

    Pros:
    *Cool looking, historical
    *Shoots full power cartridge
    *Surplus ammo is fairly cheap

    Cons:
    *Fixed magazine
*Cheap ammo is corrosive (thus major cleaning after every shoot)
    *Exterior of gun is worn

    - Greek return (but US made) M1 carbines are available from the Civilian Marksmanship program at $500 for a service grade example. They lack the power of a full power cartridge, but they are also the size of a .22 rifle. Fifteen round detachable magazines are reasonably inexpensive.

    Pros:
    *Cool looking, historical
    *Light and handy
*New production ammo is reasonably priced
    *Can accept detachable mags

    Cons:
*.30 carbine is basically a souped up pistol round, it does not compare will with true rifle rounds in range or power
*Condition can be iffy (a Service grade rifle rifle will be good mechanically, but some exterior wear is expected)
*Availability of inexpensive ammo can be off and on
*Have the price of mags on top of the price of the rifle

    - A local shop has AR-15 lowers in stock. I could build my own custom rifle. However, this would be the most expensive (minimum $600) of the options nad there are several issues I have with the platform.

    Pros:
    *A new custom gun
*.223 ammunition, while a light rifle caliber, is decidedly more powerful than .30 Carbine.
*Steel case .223 is reasonably priced
*I already have three 20 round magazines I bought as trade fodder

    Cons:
    *Expensive
*The AR-15 receiver is constucted of aluminum, and is pretty much only available with plastic furniture. It is not totally logical, but I want my guns to have steel receivers. I think they are more durable, look better, and wear better.
*Brass case .223 ammo is expensive, and some ARs have trouble digesting steel cases.
*The AR-15 blows propellant gasses back into the action, which means that cleaning needs to be more frequent and is a PITA.
*The Ar-15 Kit companies are running a 3-4 month waiting list for kits.

    - Lastly, there is the option of getting another pistol. I believe I made a post a year or two ago where I commented I wanted a Browning Hi-Power. Well, my preferred gun shop doesn't have a Browning HP, but they do have an Argentinean FM model. FM was licensed by FN (owners of the Browning brand, and makers of the FAL and FN49) to produce a clone of the HP. While it lack the finishing detail of the FN, it still is well made and is quite a bit cheaper at $325 (possibly with some wiggle room). Although I already have a .357, it is more expensive to shoot both .38s and .357s versus the 9x19, plus it does not have the capacity of the HP.

    Pros:
    *Looks classy
    *Ammo is comparatively cheap
    *Inexpensive
    *Cheap mags

    Cons:
*This is a pistol, and I already have two of them. I would like to start shooting some centerfire rifles, but I already like shooting pistols.
*Again, this is a pistol and is unlikely to be heavily hit by new legislation. I do want to own a semi-auto centerfire rifle.

    Anyone have any advice?

Oh, and to compare ammo prices:

9x19 Luger: 20c per shot (reloadable)
.223 Remington (Steel): 26c per shot (nonreloadable)
8x57 Mauser: 26c per shot (nonreloadable)
    .30 Carbine: 31c per shot(reloadable)
.223 Remington (Brass): 46c per shot (reloadable)

What exactly is invovled in the installation of a feed ramp into the Saiga? I kind of understand the rest, but is it a part you are adding or are you cutting feed ramps into the barrel extension?

      http://www.cross-conn.com/Saiga_Conversion/step_8.htm

You drill and tap the trunnion to install the feed ramp. Then there is a bit of metal on the mag catch assembly that needs to be filed down because AK mags have a thicker latch(the metal is not on the lever itself, but the metal that the magazine locks against).

That sucks. I am kind of tempted to get a lower myself, as a local store apparently has some in stock, but a lead on an FAL is holding me off.

I'd go with the FAL, it's not like they're gonna stop making AR-15 lowers any time soon, FALs are a little harder to come by :-P

Also, I can get steel 30 rounders for $20, the Surefire 30 rounders are about $40-50.

EDIT : just noticed your edit. Nope, I am waiting until I modify it to use AK magazines to fire it, which will be (hopefully) this week.

Shame you're in NY, as the aftermarket Surefire Saiga mags are pretty close in price to original AK mags now. Unfortunately they are current production.

Did you ever end up getting that AR lower?

Nope, it was gonna take so long I just cancelled the order. I'll get one another time.

That looks quite nice - I didn't know you could do that sort of modification on a rifle. Is there a limit on what you can do?

Yes. You cannot manufacture a machinegun, the barrel cannot be shorter than 16" and the over-all length must be such-and-such. In my particular state, I cannot add a flash hider or bayonet lug, and I can only have a fixed stock (like it has now). My magazines also must be made before 1994, the cut-off date "high capacity" magazines in New York. Any imported rifle (like mine) has to have a certain amount of parts replaced with US-made equivalents in order to have "non-sporting" features (which is what the current apperance is defined as, non-sporting).

What I did is basically removed the stupid rube-goldberg trigger mechanism that came with it, removed a metal plate that was blocking holes for the proper trigger and dropped in a US-made fire-control group (hammer, trigger, disconnector). If you saw the internals, you'd understand. Anyway, with the US made stock and the 3 fire-control group parts, I comply with the importation law and the rifle is considered "US made". This allows me to use foreign magazines, which are the only ones I can use, the only pre-ban mags are European military surplus.

  23. All right. DW is still here and advances in Doom technology are still being made. That's great to see. I just like to pop in every 11 months or so to see what's going on. Did anything exciting happen that can't be learned from a quick visit to the news section?

  24. So beautiful, like a retarded butterfly.

All my life, it's been good and bad in a row

I will have my times of uninterupted joy

Then I will get shot down

    Over and over

    Constantly

It breaks me, like I'm glass

Shattering on the marble floor of life

The pain and joy are one feeling to me now

For when I feel joy, I know pain is coming soon

And when the pain engulfs me, I know that joy is bound to rear itself again...

But what will I do when it doesn't?

Will I allow myself to live without joy?

Will I allow myself to live?

    Guess who?

For some reason darknation thinks I wrote this, but I had nothing to do with it. I don't write poetry.
