  1. A couple weeks ago, I dropped $99 for an AR-15 lower receiver. Note, this isn't the one I ordered, just a visual representation of what it is :

I called yesterday and it turns out that they oversold their stock, so I have to wait until they get their next batch in. This is a big pain in the ass, because this is the critical part and the only part of the gun that can't be shipped directly to my door, so I may get the rest of the rifle (upper receiver assembly, lower parts kit and a buttstock) before the actual firearm itself (under Federal law, since it is the serial #ed part, it is the firearm).

I think to tide myself over, I will get an antique Finnish Mosin-Nagant M39 rifle. It can be shipped right to my door because the receiver was made before 1899. Despite this, they are just as strong, reliable and accurate as my Russian Mosin-Nagant M91/30 made in 1927, or a Polish Mosin M44 carbine made in 1952.

This specific rifle, which I hope to get (or one like it) was acquired by Finland through various means (capture in warfare, purchased / trade with other countries that had Mosins). They got heaps and heaps of Mosins and ravaged them, replacing the sights, stock and barrels to their specifications, as well as other modifications. The receiver is this part :

The pic is pretty big in terms of image size so I am URLing to it

They did not make their own receivers, they only used salvaged ones. These rifles more than likely saw use during Finland's defense against Russia during the Winter War / Continuation War.

You have to admit, that is awesome, a piece of history that can be shipped to my door and can be used to harvest game.

Thanks for reading the first post, where I said "under Federal law, this is considered the firearm."

Only handguns are licensed and registered with the Government in New York state, to buy a long gun you gotta be at least 16 w/ parental permission or 18 to flat out buy it yourself. You say "I want this gun" and you give them the money. You fill out Form 4473, a documentation of sale that is protected from warrantless searches (supposedly) and they call your name into what is called NICS (said like "Nick's"), they say "name, from address, matching descrip with SSN wants to purchase a firearm" and if you pass the check (it should take less than 5 minutes, for me it has always been an instant proceed) you get your firearm. If you don't pass the check, you may very well get charged with a felony (lying on the 4473).

Also, you don't need a license or anything in almost every state to build a firearm from scratch, and you shouldn't. However, you cannot build it with the intent to sell it and if you DO sell it, you must mark it with a serial # and keep a documentation of sale. You cannot build guns to sell as a business without a license.

In NY they trust me not to get the stuff I need to fire my blackpowder revolver. Under the law, I can own a blackpowder handgun as long as I do not have the materials to load it (I don't), but the materials can be purchased over the Internet without any ID or in any gunshop and they won't bat an eye.

True. There is one good thing that has come of those brutal dictatorships - we've learned from our mistakes. As long as history remembers these figures, and as long as people are still educated about them, it's essentially impossible that someone even remotely so evil will once again rise to power (in a Western, educated society). This means that Bush is almost at the upper limit of how bad a US leader can be, which isn't yet extraordinarily bad in the grand scheme of things.

But, if Bush is as bad a president as will ever be brought to power, and if those who were armed did nothing to stop him, then an armed populace is an outmoded form of cultural defense.

We don't have to fight our leaders with guns anymore. We should start fighting them with referendums and impeachment. I'd like to see Republicans get riled up about unnecessary wars and horrible economic strategies instead of how many AK-47's their president lets them play with.

Wait, wait, you honestly believe that Bush was bad enough to justify an armed insurrection? And that because we did not do so, an armed populace is "outmoded"? What the fuck kind of crack are you smoking?

Interesting argument. Essentially, you're saying that the populace should be free to arm themselves so that they can dispose of malevolent dictators when they arise. In principle, I agree. In practice, the last eight years have shown that those Americans who own the most guns are those who most revere their tyrants and oppressors.

If the second amendment was employed equally by members of every political faction, then it might be useful.

      in B4 shitstorm

You can't fucking compare Bush to any of those monsters. Sure, he may have been a bad President, but did he round up citizens en-masse and murder them for being "impure" or because they were political dissidents? All of the bad shit Bush did can be fixed, you can't fix mass murder (and no, the Iraq war doesn't qualify)

Apparently nobody heard of the 1994 Assault Weapon Ban, which outlawed a class of firearms from being manufactured based only on cosmetic features. This Unconstitutional law was in effect for 10 years and is still in effect in New York and other states that have their own version. No, they won't "take our guns" but they will Unconstitutionally dictate which guns are "suitable" and which are not.

And I hate everyone equally, not just niggers :-D

  7. I recently moved to a fairly small town, and I was honestly hoping the driving would be better. Turns out it's worse, a LOT worse. I was driving my brother home yesterday and there was a dog standing in the middle of the road. I honked at it, trying to get it to move but it just stood there. Next I tried pulling forward a little bit, still nothing. Finally I just decided "fuck it" and decided to go around the dog. I was a little hesitant to do this at first because there was a blind corner up ahead, but I had to get the dog to move somehow, and considering the size of the dog I wasn't exactly willing to charge out of the car screaming profanity at the top of my lungs and waving my arms around like an idiot, or anything like that. So I started going around the dog and I was right beside the dog when someone in a truck came flying around the corner going 40 mph. The problem is, this guy doesn't stop. He doesn't even slow down or pull to the side of the road. He just keeps flying towards me. I managed to clear the dog quick enough to avoid something serious, but he did manage to scratch my car. Guess what the guy does next. He keeps going like nothing even happened. I had to get some touch up paint and something to buff out the damage, which ended up costing me around $200 bucks. To make matters worse, the touch up paint doesn't even match the car. I'm still trying to figure out what the fuck was going through that guy's head when he saw me trying to go around the dog.

  8. My girlfriend and I had a long phone conversation just a few minutes ago, and we both came to realize that we had the same viewpoint on our relationship: It needs to end, but not anytime soon. We know that it's not going to become anything permanent and has no real potential beyond what it already is. At the same time, though, there's no pressing need or want to break up preemptively.

From her perspective, there's no real future potential mainly because of a difference in personal interests. I'm interested in games, techy hobbies, living a wealthy lifestyle, and traditional pastimes like fancy dinner, movies, and alcohol here and there. She's interested in the outdoors, reading, celtic music, and environmentalism. The small amount of overlap in our interests includes a few TV shows and the occasional movie. That's about it.

From my perspective, there's no real future potential because of the reasons mentioned above and because of the fact that I know I can't live with her. The relationship is great when we see each other 2 to 3 times a week, spending the night here and there. Anything much more or less than that has proven to be a strain on the relationship. Another factor is that she's riddled with family problems and is struggling (financially) to make it through university. I don't really want her to be a burden on me financially, as she has no way to pay her fair share if she were to live with me. Her future prospects for earning money are pretty mediocre as well, as she's majoring in biology and she has said loud and clear that money isn't what she cares about in life. I can understand that but I also can't escape the fact that I would want a life partner to help free me up financially and work toward some more exciting life goals such as traveling, homebuilding and maybe getting involved in playing sports or games with other people.

As it stands today, neither of us want to ever have kids, but she wouldn't mind the idea of getting married some day. I'm dead set against marriage because of its religious stigma. This kind of explains why we're both OK with just riding out our relationship until it glides to some kind of stop. Neither of us feel any pressing need to have a relationship that's going to "lead to something." Essentially we're getting our jollies from food, sex, small talk, and some mindless TV entertainment. I also get along with her family really well, despite the fact that they're the major cause of her stress and worries.

Is our arrangement bizarre or is it more common than I think?

Nope. Apparently, you've chalked up a rifle or a few rifles with poor bores to all Mosins being inaccurate. From the factory, Mosins were required to hit 3 out of 5 shots in a 1" group at 100 meters in order to be deemed fit for service, which is about as accurate as the K98k and M1 Garand.

  18. This pic isn't of my individual rifle, but is a better representation of the type of rifle I have. Yes, the scratch on the receiver is supposed to be there, it's on every AK-style weapon ever.

Today, I got a new rifle, a Russian Saiga 7.62x39. It's a "sporterized" AK-47 made by Izmash. $378 after sales tax, $349.99 was the sticker price. Not bad for a brand new rifle. It comes with the sling studs imbedded in the stock, a cleaning rod, cleaning kit (jag, brush, some kind of weird poker and a screwdriver) and a little plastic bottle to keep cleaner in or something. It also has the "dovetail" side-mount, all I need to do is buy a base if I want to throw some optics on it, but I probably won't.

An interesting note, this rifle was made at the very same factory as my Mosin-Nagant M91/30 rifle that was made in 1927! They're brothers in arms, heh.

It uses a proprietary magazine design, making it incompatible with regular AK-47 magazines, they are, however, still double-stack. Since I live in New York, I can only legally own magazines that hold 10 rounds or less. Fucking things are expensive, like $30 apiece for a 10 round magazine! Oh well.

  20. I've noticed an increasing number of modern games that include team based combat, where if you, or someone on your team has to reload their firearm, the character obnoxiously shouts "RELOADING!!"

This bothered the hell out of me in Call of Duty 4, but also appears that Star Wars Republic Commando, Killzone, and now Left 4 Dead are using that idea too.

In games, I'd be surprised if reloading a regular gun took more than a full 2 seconds. What the hell is anyone going to do for you during that duration? Who the fuck cares whether your reloading or not? Save your own ass and reload when someone's not driving bullets down your throat.

Which essentially, that's what most people do. Shouting "RELOADING!!!" is completely unnecessary and gets old fast. I dont know why games are provoking this as a feature.

In real life, when reloading, a soldier will announce it to the troops around him so that they can provide him with covering fire while he reloads his weapon.

  21. So, I just found out the Mosin-Nagant M91/30 rifle I got for Christmas is rarer than I originally thought. It is an Izhevsk-made updated Dragoon (an older model updated to the M91/30 specs) dated 1927 with a second date of 1952 (the exact date reads "1927 r /52" (the r stands for the Russian word for God / year). Now, when I first got it, I thought that meant that was when it was refurbished, but it in fact means that it was removed from storage and re-issued, most likely due to rising tensions of the Cold War. Now, when rifles are double-dated, they are commonly marked MO (abbreviation for the Russian words for Ministry of Defense), but mine is NOT marked MO, meaning it was during the rare period when the MO did not exist as it did when it re-issued rifles and marked them.

Taking this into account, the webmaster of 7.62x54r.net]7.62x54r says that, according to his scale of rarity, my rifle rates a 7 or 8 out of 10, instead of the 4 a regular single date updated Izhevsk Dragoon would be or the 6 of an MO double-dated M91/30. Basically this means that the $99 I paid for it was a good deal, I should have been paying at least $150-180 for it. Pretty neat to discover more about the history of my rifle.

NOTE : if any of you US citizens are interested in owning a piece of history from WWII, classicarms.us has some very unique rifles, including K98ks, the rifles used by Nazi Germany.

no, you wouldn't. No one will play this. the Engine is too old, making the art look inconsistent, and the 256 colors would make people retch.

A lot of gamers don't know what an engine is or really give a fuck, they want cool bleeps, blops and blips and neat shit happening on their screen. AD2 delivers.
