  1. Don’t mean to necropost but I thought this could add to this, see for yourself around 0:48... Yes, that’s Wolfenstein 3D, but if it wasn’t true in ‘92, I don’t think it would’ve suddenly become true in ‘93. Also, I know this thread is old but I saw someone talking about Quake in the 3rd page I think and I don't know if anyone said this but... open console and type (without quotes) "+mlook" then press enter, close console, and it should turn mouselook on by default even on the DOS version of the game.

Doom 2: Sequel or Expansion Pak?

To me, Doom II is a sequel because it cannot be played without owning Doom II. You can’t own Doom/Ultimate Doom and say you have Doom II. So it being a standalone game is what I feel makes the argument that it’s an expansion null and void. Feeling like an expansion and being an expansion are two different things. ROE I’m pretty sure requires (or at least it did before BFG edition put them all together) that you have Doom 3 installed or at least own Doom 3 for it to work. So it is without any wiggle room - an expansion to Doom 3, and it even says so in its title. I think you may have misunderstood what seed was trying to say though. Doom 2 is a DIRECT sequel to Doom. You follow in the footsteps of the very same space marine that was in the first game, just seconds after he returns to Earth. Doom 3: ROE may continue the Doom 3 story, but you are not the same marine from the base game.

Doom 2: Sequel or Expansion Pak?

Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil says “DOOM 3: RESURRECTION OF EVIL”. So where’s the point in your response?

How does one get good at Doom?

I used to play keyboard only for a long time and that’s the controls I used too, though I generally just Alt strafed instead of using the dedicated strafe keys. I think it’s a great way to play the game, but I don’t think you have a fair chance against DM players that are using a mouse, but that doesn’t mean there hasn’t been good keyboard only DM players, they are just few and far between and most don’t play Doom online anymore. I have been playing lately with a “mouse only” approach. Of course, I still need the keyboard to navigate the menu, to switch the weapons without having the cycle through each one individually at a time, and for the speed/run key, but I use a 5 button mouse for all movement including strafe, opening doors, and shooting. I think a duel between a mouse-only vs a keyboard only would be fun to watch the demo.

Doom 2: Sequel or Expansion Pak?

It’s a sequel. That’s why it’s called “Doom II” and not “Doom: Expansion Pack”. They did a much better job at making it obvious that it was connected to a previous game than they did when they made Spear of Destiny (which is a prequel to Wolfenstein 3D) when they brought it to retail. SOD was meant to be the retail Wolfenstein 3D title but it didn’t sell nearly as well as Wolfenstein 3D, and while Doom was a huge success, Doom II was a massive success as well. They learned from their mistakes with SOD and did it right with Doom II. Doom II might look a lot like Doom, but it is not the same game. Spear of Destiny looks a lot like Wolfenstein 3D, but it’s a completely different game from Wolf 3D as well. Doom II might have a lot more similarities to Doom on the inside but I’m pretty sure that was done so deliberately because unlike with Wolfenstein, Id was actually very interested in making Doom user-friendly for modders (this is why Doom modders are scared of EXE flies while Wolf modders are use to needing to download separate EXEs). SOD required its own source code branch and files that were completely separate from Wolf 3D, but having Doom and Doom II be fairly compatible was a smart move on Id’s part because it ensured the games would have a lot of support that could be compatible for both games. I get where people are coming from when they say things like “Doom II and Spear of Destiny are just glorified expansion packs”, but just because the games share many of the same graphics, sounds, etc, that doesn’t make it an “expansion”. You still need Doom II in order to play Doom II. It won’t matter if you have Doom or the Ultimate Doom, or Final Doom, and for this reason alone it should throw this argument out the window, because this proves the game is a stand alone game. Here’s an example of this mindset outside of gaming, let’s talk Glocks... between the gen 1 to gen 2 to gen 3 to gen 4 and finally to gen 5, a lot of people say “there’s no difference” while Glock says “we have made significant changes from generation to generation”. Who’s right? Glock is. The guns might look mostly the same from one to the next on the outside, but the differences on the inside are what makes the big differences between having a gen5 and having a gen 1. You don’t have a gen5 if you have a gen 1-4, just like you don’t have Doom II just because you have Doom, they may look the same on the outside for the most part and share some of the same internal features just like the Glocks, but they are different and having one does not mean you have the other.

What do you think of mods like brutal Doom?

I’m not a fan, primarily when it revolves around the vanilla maps, but I’m not into BD in general and avoid servers that use BD online and prefer other mods or vanilla gameplay. I just don’t like any of the features. To me, it unbalances the hell out of the base games and maybe I’m just not into the “rip and tear” stuff like so many others are. I’m not interested in being told “it does balance” because it definitely does not balance well with the base IWADS and just like you, I have the right to an opinion and that opinion is that no, I do not like Brutal Doom, but I don’t care if other people like it, knock yourselves out! What I don’t like is when someone makes something (WAD, pk3, etc) and the only question is “does this support BD?” - no, now fuck off! - seems to always be the usual response to that question, but does it honestly need to be asked on every project? Does everything HAVE to support Brutal Doom? I don’t think the answer is yes to either of those questions.

How does one get good at Doom?

Neat info on the auto run working in vanilla. I didn’t know that. The trick back in the day was to rig the run key on the keyboard with a coin to keep it pressed in, essentially creating an “auto run”. If I had only known...

How does one get good at Doom?

I suggest moving to keyboard and mouse. Even without using free-look, meaning you keep that disabled so that there is no “mouselook” available, you will notice your turning and strafing get a lot better with this setup. Use the mouse to do all the turning and shooting, use the keyboard for directional moving/strafing and other important functions. Trust me, I was a keyboard only player too at one point, but believe me when I say it has its advantages in SP just as much as it does in DM. if you’re using a limit-removing source port you usually have a lot more freedom over the controls than you will with vanilla Doom, but you can configure the controls however you like. I think being able to control the game is the most important aspect to learning how to get good. This is my setup for Odamex, Zandronum, and GZDOOM. My vanilla/chocolate/crispy setup isn’t as user configurable, but it is still fairly similar: keyboard keys: W- move forward A - strafe left S - move backward D -strafe right E -Open/Use Q -chainsaw/fist (weapon slot 1) F - pistol (weapon slot 2) Spacebar -180 degree turn, but on Zandronum I use it as the strafe specific button instead since there isn’t a 180 degree turn option. Backspace - spectate \- Co-op spy note: another popular option, especially for vanilla Doom is instead of WASD, use ESDF instead. mouse controls: left button - fire/shoot right button -walk/run (this is more useful than some might realize, especially in DM) mid button (mousewheel being pushed in) - Rocket Launcher (weapon slot 5) mousewheel up - shotguns (weapon slot 3) mousewheel down -chaingun (weapon slot 4) mouse button 4 - Plasma Gun (weapon slot 6) mouse button 5 - BFG (weapon slot 7) note: vanilla doom does not give you as much freedom for the control scheme, but you would probably still want the mouse to switch between weapons and control the firing and walking/running. You could also use one of the buttons as a strafe button, and if you use the strafe button while moving the mouse to the same direction you are strafing with the keyboard strafe keys, you can strafe even faster than usual but cannot control turning. I personally find that to only be so useful myself, and find that being able to control your speed is far more important in combat be it between AI or real life opponents. also, some will say they’re outdated, but they are cheap as hell and they add something to your collection.... pick up some of those old Doom strategy books. Some people learn better from watching other people play, but I learned long before that was a common possibility with the “Doom Construction Kit” book, which gives a lot of information on the monsters and items, in very detailed ways that most videos tend to brush off as common knowledge. Some of the design tips for making WADS IS outdated from these books, but the combat info is far from obsolete. The Doom Wiki is also a great place to read up on how each monster behaves and what different items do. You should have that stuff drilled into your head so you’ll know how to conserve items and the best approaches on monsters. if you’re going to watch someone else play, you need to be sure they are playing by the same rules you will choose to play by. So don’t watch someone playing using free-look, crouching, jumping, etc. If you intend to not use those features, then watch videos of other people not using them as well. A user I recommend if you want a lot of the information found in text form put into a well made video would be Decino on YouTube. there’s a lot more I could say, but it seems you’ve got a lot of other advice already that I don’t feel like repeating myself! Just remember the whole point is to have FUN. Unless you’re playing for money, there’s no need to worry too much over your skills to where you make yourself feel bad, in the end you just have to restart or reload, and try again.

    Why is Plutonia good?

Doom and Doom II can become a simple walk in the park after repeatedly playing them again and again, learning skills along the way making the easier difficulties unnecessary, which I think all this was done by design. Id wanted you to play again and again, and they wanted you to get through Ultra-Violence, and maybe even nightmare if you were crazy enough. I think Plutonia and arguably TNT were not designed this way. Not that they don’t want you to play them over and over, but more so that they were not designed with a learning curve in mind. They expected you’ve played the other games a lot already, and the challenge reflects that viewpoint in Plutonia the most. So to me, the difficulties with Plutonia feel more like an enemy density filter and less of a true difficulty option like in the base games. For most people thought I’d say it just never feels as good to say you beat something on anything other than UV or for the sickos... nightmare.
  10. That’s a good idea actually. I have considered a deer finder/trail device as well. I think I’ll look into that. Thanks and I hope you solve your problem as well!
  11. Java with Greenfoot 2nd edition book (the software is free, and it’s the book with the crabs on it not the foot icon) if you’re wanting a more academic type experience. You will learn that it’s not so much about a programmer choosing a language as much as it’s about a language choosing a programmer, or the more controversial way of saying it: the employer or simply the task at hand will demand the language for you and it’s best to start somewhere than to bounce this question around longer, and to me with Greenfoot you learn all the essentials of game design and computer programming that you’ll be able to apply what you’ve learned from the book outside of Java, hell, you could forget all about java afterwards if you wanted to but the basics are still the basics.
  12. (is this meant as an off topic area?) Hi, in the past few weeks I’ve had a strange situation occur on my property several times now, with the most recent time being this morning. Not to the point that I’m afraid, but more on the line of being curious as to what is happening and wanting to get to the bottom of it once and for all because I’m through picking up someone else’s garbage. For the past few weeks I keep finding white towels in my driveway (they look like they are squared cut pieces of a larger towel to sort of form a mini washcloth like towel), nothing too sinister except the fact it can’t just be wind dragging it in since there’s been several placed on my driveway after I threw the one I found the day before away, and it’s happened quite a few times now. I’ve suspected it could possibly be a feral cat that I feed that might be finding these and leaving them here as gifts, but I’m not too convinced they’d bring the same thing so many times. I’ve also considered it could just be a neighbor messing with me, but I am a fairly private person so I don’t find this likely either. I’ve also assumed it could just be one big coincidence, but there’s no evidence to back that up. now before I get to my question, I am not in fear of my life so that’s why I am asking on Doomworld and not asking the 🐷, I am an American after all and the 2nd amendment is well regarded within my home, but on my driveway, that’s what property insurance is for if I’m not on it but I still would like to get to the bottom of this regardless of if it is criminal or not. I’m fairly sure there’s nothing criminal about it but I would still like to get to the bottom of it anyways. I’ve decided it might be a good idea to put a camera or something I can view from my PC or smartphone to record what’s going on at night... this is where I need the advice. Do any of you use anything like that for security of your home and have any suggestions on what program to use? I really only need a 1 camera set up as the rest of my yard is fenced in and there’s no way they’ll get through there without waking my rotty. thanks in advance and please don’t turn this into a political argument because I said I support the 2nd amendment. I don’t care what you think about firearm ownership, I asked about security cameras. Thanks again.

    Unpopular Doom Opinions

I have another one but it’s for Doom 3: Doom 3 wasn’t hated by everyone forever. It’s become more and more of a trend to hate that game in recent years. Yes, there have always been critics but I’m starting to feel like it’s just a trendy hate train and some of the complaints sound like they come from people who didn’t even play the game. I’m not saying it’s the best Doom or even one of the best, but it definitely wasn’t nearly as bad as some people try to pretend it was, and if you are old enough to remember... it was the first new Doom game in a long time for many of us long before Doom 2016.
  14. Idk if this is cheating or not, but I’d say any of the “boss” levels found in ports of Doom like on the GBA or Jaguar. Those levels were very underwhelming as a finale.
