I mean, Doom has a save feature and most "hard" wads have fights that rely on the player dying a few times and having to figure out a strategy. Think of Sunlust, Combat Shock 2 or even just the later third of Scythe 2 or even Ancient Aliens.

NaNoWADMo 2021 - The month-long mapping challenge (see you next year!)
Yumheart replied to scwiba's topic in WAD Releases & Development
What did I get done during NaNoWadMo? 1½ maps. Impressive, ik, but there's only so much you can do when you're simultaniously being smothered with class tests, homework and presentations. But hey, here are some screenshots from the WIP-map, I might just get it done over the christmas holidays '. w. -
Do you mean that in the context of 1996? Because there are plenty of wads out there harder than Plutonia, I wouldn't consider them complete bullshit whatsoever. I see why the lack of difficulty progression might be a turn-off to some though, personally I prefer it to the Scythe-ish way of the first half being a snooze and only the second half being fun or challenging.

Crypts of Eternity - released! [CL 2 - limit removing] -/idgames

Played with pistol starts. Very fun set of maps! Snappy and hectic combat (the soundtrack really helped with that), nicely oppressive revenant snipers and plentiful ammo and health. I definitely recognize your "fast and loose" mentality here, it's a great time. The continuity between the six maps was also a really nice touch. MAP06 was the best one in the set for me, not particularly hard, but I always enjoy some light-hearted slaughter fun. Thanks for making this :3 Minor critique: -

Right, I changed my Doom name from C3ntralPr0cessing. Sorry for the complications. -

REDROCK environments, but with lotsa green slime instead of the typical blood- or lavafalls. -
ZZZFACE looks great when you have it peeking through a little crack in the wall. Besides, it's just a cool-looking brown texture. Antaresian Requilary uses it in some maps as well iirc.

Aside from the BRNSMAL family, I don't care much for the midtextures. Those bars just look so cheaply made and don't fit Doom's artstyle well at all. Doom 2 has way more good textures than bad ones though, it's just about how you combine 'em. And, I hope this isn't a debate anymore, FIREBLU is amazing.

I've decided to actually make a, idk 12-map or smth wad. I wanna try to make colorful and unique-looking maps, that don't align with stereotypical themes (firery / bloody hell, tech bases, earthy tech bases, cities and so forth) that much. Don't think I'll get it done in one month cause I map pretty slow and have school breathing down my neck, but hopefully I'll have something to share at the end of the month anyways. Already worked a little bit ahead of time, confident I'm gonna finish the first map tomorrow, but until then here are some screenies. -
LZDoom cause purple looks better than blue.

Why is MAP29 usually the hardest map in most WADs?
Yumheart replied to xdude_gamer's topic in Doom General
When people still regularly made Icon of Sin maps as megawad closers, MAP29 was essentially the final big challenge, and it just makes sense to make your final "real" map your hardest one, doesn't it? Another factor might also be Plutonia, which put it's hardest, or at the very least, most memorable map in MAP29. Plutonia was of cause hugely influential, and this seems to be a tradition that carried on. -

No joke, I just wanted to ask for the same, just within the par time. That's slightly spooky, you sure you don't have any psychic powers? -
Be nice, don't backbite, try to stay positive, even though it's completely okay to talk about serious things with your friends from time to time. That might seem obvious, but it was quite the revelation for 14-year-old me. Oh, and remember that everything is gonna be okay! # ' w'#

Remake a map from The Ultimate Doom. You're allowed to take lots of creative liberty, just make sure it's vanilla-compatible. Also, no custom content, just standard Doom. And have fun, ofc . ^. -
The TNT midi pack has a pretty solid replacement, much more atmospheric.

"Steel Works" is probably my favorite. Not exactly challenging, but brisk and fun. The layout is creative but never confusing, and "Cold Subtleness" and "Introducing Mrs. Tier F" are both awesome accompaniments. Some other fun / interesting maps: "Pharao", "Carribean", "Wormhole", "Crater" and "Heck".

what are you working on? I wanna see your wads.

Played it. It's a fun map with some cool attention to detail. Was too dumb to find the yellow key, but I still had a good time.
