Two today! Map 5: Almighty Sweep UV | PrBoom+ "Oh, boy," I says to myself, I say, "now that this harmless Archvile is dead I don't have to worry about things being resurrected!" Beans. I thought I could leisurely take out that Cyber from down low before I started getting pelted with reborn chaingun pellets. That was mean. Good mean, though. Map 6: Fade UV | PrBoom+ Oh, good. Only one Archie. This one felt like a combat puzzle with many solutions and the one that worked best for me was zipping through that room with the up-high zombies so I could save them and some rockets for the end. Everything else got the chaingun or the SSG. Cathartic map. Loved it. Probably my favorite so far. Loved the music too.

    Favorite videogame soundtrack

Keiichi Suzuki and Hirokazu Tanaka had so much fun just dipping into so many different genres and that it all melds together as a wonderful whole is just a miracle unto itself. Huge serotonin injection.

Thank you so much for explaining that before I was so confused lol Map 04: Tutorials Work UV | PrBoom+ This one was a lot of fun! Really awesome just getting everything in-fighting and circling back around for health pick ups and stragglers. I managed to get this one done on my second try without saves, which is a minor miracle. That post-BFG trap got me good even though I was anticipating it. On a more personal note, I'm enjoying playing these quite a bit. I've been playing Doom since the mid-90s but only really delved into fan-made stuff the last two or so years. The difficulty bump from commercial WADs to stuff like BTSX or Ancient Aliens has been a lot to handle for me and stuff like Bourgeois has been great for warming up and just teaching me to play more aggressively.

Map 03: Solitary Refinement UV | PrBoom+ This one's a blast! Little easier than the first two for me, maybe if only because of the cold start. This one was really fun to learn and I actually spent a little bit of time trying to go through it as fast as I could and got it down to 40 seconds. I feel like these levels really encourage a lot of creative play and challenge setting. Can I beat this without grabbing the berserk? How fast can I do this? How much in-fighting can I set up? Fun stuff. I'd love to try these in deathmatch one of these days. EDIT! I went into Zandronum and played the first three maps with 3 bots just for fun's sake. That was an immense amount of fun even with just bots. Perfect for this. Oh and I feel dumb because I totally did not realize that the intended method for grabbing the BFG and key in Map 1 was hopping down from the next room. I just hopped onto that ledge from where the first key was lol

Map 02: Keepsake UV | PrBoom+ This one was cathartic! I found myself hanging back a lot more in this one than in the first map. At first I wanted to grab the berserk and go to town but that really didn't work well for me the first go round. What I ended up doing with both berserks on the map was saving them for emergencies. I found myself having a lot more fun rifling the zombies, ducking in to get the blue key, and then doing some circles around the window the Cyberdemon could shoot through. While the mid-tiers were in-fighting, I grabbed the berserk and punched out the pinkies. Grabbed the plasma, took out the Cyber with it and peaced out after getting the stragglers. All this to say was that a lot of the "hard work" in the map was taken care of on its own through in-fighting. Most of the time I was pulling the trigger I felt like I was just making some popcorn pop. I had to think about this one a lot less. Good, dumb (in the kindest sense of the word) fun. EDIT: Oh, and I found myself really preferring to get at these levels without any saves at all. It was really easy to just commit to starting the whole thing over again with the levels being so bite sized.

Must be. Tried it in GZDoom and Eternity and had no issues with it all.

It's after midnight, so might as well! Map 01: Darken UV | PrBoom+ Wow, that's a hot start! Immediately dashing around and trying the modified weapons. That rifle was nice while it lasted before grabbing the shotgun. Really good flow to everything. From the start to the SSG to the red key and then a little break to hop over and grab the yellow key. I was sad I wasted my second BFG shot on some skeletons before the Mastermind teleported in. I had to shotgun her, which wasn't too bad. I was hoping she'd in-fight more but oh well. Fun level. Really good use of space. Really efficient. I actually went through this again because when I was about to post this at first I saw the fixed version and then did it again! And yes! The exit was much nicer plus I was able to waste the Spider this time. Oh, but there was a problem! Map 2 on UV crashed with the error "Z_Free: Freed a pointer without ZONEID". I did the level just with cheats to get through on HMP and there was no issue. Did happen again on UV, and only on the quiet version.

I need to rewatch Interstella 5555. It's been a minute.
  12. As an English teacher, YES, English is an absolute mess. That said, it's probably one of the most versatile languages for expression, undoubtedly because it's such a mess.

a Dean of Doom series companion thread

Dean of Doom's been a great way for me to be more thoughtful of the WADs I'm playing.
  15. Yeah!! I did the same thing. Totally works really well. I was always a bit sad that D2tWiD didn't have it's own music.
  16. Man oh man oh MAN. I gotta see these MIDI projects have been my absolute favorite things to happen lately. AMAZING work, all.

    How are you playing DOOM?

On PC, my go-to source port lately has been PrBoom+ but I’ll dabble into Eternity should the WAD I’m playing benefit from that. Ancient Aliens, for example. I’ve got GZDoom ready to go, should the need arise. That said, I’m really digging the Unity port. It’s not perfect, PrBoom+ and Eternity sure look a lot cleaner, but I’m honestly just happy to see an official source port with community involvement. And boy oh boy, do I love playing that Switch port during breaks at work or in bed. I’m looking forward to the day I can safely go get a cup of coffee and enjoy that there.
  18. Could they? Sure. Should they? Maybe? Will they? Nah. I'd see it much more likely that they'd outsource to the community and do what SEGA did with Sonic Mania. I think that would be really neat, but it's essentially what's been happening on its own just without the commercial bit.
  19. Of the weirdly commercially released Doom things from that era, Perdition's Gate is the one I enjoyed the most. Definitely of that era, definitely very TNT. Hell 2 Pay I haven't played enough of to really give it a fair shake, but oh gosh those new sprites are horrible. Of what I've played it seems fine for the era. Both definitely leagues ahead of Lost Episodes.

Man, oh man. Sorry I don't have the same level of depth others do here, but gosh this is great. Everything feels so thematically cohesive so far. Really loving this.
