  1. Hi folks; it's been a while! I've finally gotten around to executing on an idea I had a few months ago: a short map designed around using the Berserk powerup as the player's primary weapon. I present to you: Factory Town, the latest in my series of industrial-themed maps (to go along with Dumping Ground and Production Line), this time set in the town that's grown around the factory itself. Turns out, it's not just the adjacent rubbish dump that the Demons have taken over! Armed with only a pistol and raw, unfiltered rage, can you survive the trickery and might of the monsters who dwell in this once-thriving community? (Yes, you can. I believe in you!) Download: FactoryTown_v1.1.7z WAD INFO: IWAD: Doom2.wad Map slot: MAP01 Compatibility: Vanilla, as always. Tested with Chocolate Doom and DOSBox. Difficulty: Plutonia-like; all settings implemented. Multiplayer: Not supported; no current plans to implement. Advanced controls (jumping, crouching &c.): Not supported; may cause sequence breaking. Vertical mouselook will make one secret easier than intended but shouldn't cause major problems More Screenshots: FactoryTown_v1.0.7z
  2. That fixed it, thanks! (download has been updated with fixed version) Yeah, I was pretty sure that's the one you meant. I did intend for the encounter to be "high threat; quickly resolved" rather than a protracted battle, so I think, in that regard at least, I succeeded. But to make what I'd consider to be an 'ideal' version of that fight would require a complete overhaul of the arena - which really isn't feasible, due to how connected it is to adjacent areas. Funny, I'd actually originally meant for the exit room to be a double-Archie fight, but when I actually built the arena, I thought it would be too open for an Archie encounter (and the arena has to be that shape, because I really wanted the exit sign to be visible from the starting area, as well as the gate leading to the Dumping Grounds). Maybe I'll try it with the two Archies; see how it feels.
  3. Yeah, I'm aware of the bumpy floor issue. I have no idea how to fix it - I know basically nothing about nodebuilder - but it's something I'm looking into. And I agree, the ending isn't the map's strongest point; I just wasn't sure what else to do there, however. Always glad to see your videos, dude! Nice work beating the map with only the Berserk - obviously I meant that to be the main weapon here but in all my playtesting I still used the pistol and shotgun. I won't complain about you using mouselook, since you still found that secret the "legit" way. Oh, and the monsters can open the doors in the "hotel" area - in theory, anyway; they're action 1 linedefs, but I guess the monsters are just dumb sometimes.

Dumping Ground: a small map made of actual trash.

Good catch! No idea how that happened, but that's definitely not supposed to be the exit! I've updated the file; it should be fixed now. Thank you for the kind words! Speedrunning isn't exactly my strong suit, but my fastest any% UV run was 1:09. Do let me know if you can beat that - or better yet, share a demo. I'd love to see it!
  5. Since I'm currently suffering from creative block with my Incursion project, I decided to make a small, standalone map. All I knew going into this was that I wanted it to be short and simple, with an average playtime under 10 minutes. When I started working on this, I happened to be listening to the song Krieger by Null Positiv (a metal song about pollution; it's good shit), and that gave me the idea to set the map in an industrial rubbish dump. I'm pretty happy with the result. It's definitely easier than Incursion. I could imagine this being map 2 or 3 of a megawad (and it might just become that, eventually). There's nothing fancy here - I probably spent nearly as much time making the sky texture as I did the map itself - but I figured I may as well publish it. Map Info: - Replaces MAP01 of DOOM II: Hell on Earth. - Tested with Chocolate Doom. Should work with just about any source port you like. - All difficulties are supported. This map is supposed to be on the easier side (comparable to the Starport levels of DOOM II). - Estimated play time: 5-7 minutes. Download: DUMPGRND_v1.03.7z Screenshots:
  6. Update: This Project is on Temporary Hiatus After careful consideration, I have decided to put this series on hold for a little while. As much as I love Doom, playing it weekly has dulled my passion for it. I know how my own mind works, and I know that the solution is to take a step back for a time. I don't know how long; it might be a couple weeks, it might be more than a month. I just need to recharge my Doom batteries, so to speak. I fully intend to return to this in the future. There are still so many WADs y'all have submitted that I want to play, but for now, I need to shift my focus to other things, for the sake of my own mental health, and for the sake of the quality of my work. I hope you all can understand, and I'll see you in a little while. ====================================================================================== For a little while now, I've been occasionally recording videos of my playthroughs of maps here on Doomworld. I've decided I'd like to make this a more structured thing, recording and posting videos on a regular schedule rather than just whenever. But, I need WADs to play! That's where you come in - if you have a WAD and would like to see me record it, please post it in this thread and I'll (probably) play it! You can either post the WAD directly in this thread or link to its own thread/post here on Doomworld if it has one. Now, I do need to lay down some guidelines for how this is going to work. I will upload a new video every Wednesday, starting July 14th. The video will be public on my YouTube channel, and linked in a post on this thread. When I have downloaded your map, I will Invulnerability your post, at which point any further updates you make will not be reflected in my playthrough. I will play WADS made for the Doom, Doom 2, TNT, Plutonia, or Heretic IWADs. I have a strong preference for Vanilla-style gameplay. Any WADs that are Chocolate/Crispy compatible will be treated as higher priority than WADs that require GZdoom /require jumping or mouselook / make changes to game function and balance. If you don't post screenshots, I won't play your WAD. If linking to a separate thread for your WAD, you don't need to post screenshots here, so long as the original thread has some. Due to the time it takes to record, edit, &c., single-level WADs will be treated as higher-priority than multi-level and megaWADs. WADs by authors of all skill/experience levels are welcome. I want to see your first-ever map as much as I want to see your magnum opus! That said, Finished maps only, please! This doesn't mean you can't continue to patch/update/refine your WAD after I've played it, of course - just don't post a rough draft or anything that can't be "won." And, as a sample of my recording/presentation style: here is a playthrough I did of a map by @Clippy I look forward to seeing what amazing WADs you've made!

@Astro X This was a lot of fun. Crucially, I think it was exactly the pace/style of Doom level I was in the mood for when I played it. I definitely intend to revisit it and play the rest at some point.

No video this week; sorry folks. I've had a bunch of stuff going on lately & I just haven't had the energy to record any videos of the level of quality I try to hold myself to. And it wouldn't be fair to y'all for me to play your maps when my heart isn't in it - I want to be able to judge the WADs I play on their own merits, not biased by my ill mood caused by unrelated stuff in my life.

@VisionThing This was a fun little map. Got some pretty strong Doom64 vibes from it. It's simple, but enjoyable; the atmosphere/visual theming was definitely the map's strongest suit. @Pistoolkip Since the "main" WAD in this video was on the shorter side, I also played the final level of Slith. That was a pretty solid boss fight; the whole way through I was constantly on my toes, but never feeling too much pressure. Only thing I didn't like was that the Spider Mastermind felt like a bit of an anticlimax (but when doesn't she?). Oh, and, since I don't think I mentioned it in this video: I loved the visual design here. The main basilica is absolutely gorgeous. Good stuff.

Right now this second? Vibin' with some Kero Kero Bonito.

That's reassuring. I was worried I had missed an incredibly-obvious switch or something, lol

@Pistoolkip (publishing this early because I might not have a chance to make this post tomorrow) Well, this was a really fun set of levels! I only had time for the first 3 maps, unfortunately, and I did have to cheat on map03. Sorry! I just couldn't find the way to progress at one point. Even so, these were a good time. I have also learnt that, in future, I should mute the music in WADs that use non-DOOM tracks. This vid got hit by a copyright claim, so there's probably gonna be ads on it. Nothing I can do about that, unfortunately.

Hey folks; no video this week, sorry! I think I strained my wrist with too much gaming, so I couldn't play Doom (well, I probably could've, but I want to give the injury a chance to heal while it's still mild, not make it worse). Normal schedule should resume next week.
  15. I completed all 5 episodes on Thou Art a Smite-Meister, and I gotta say, it was really fun! I love the colourful medieval-fantasy aesthetic, the enemy variety was pretty decent, and all the weapons were fun to use (except the Firemace; I never quite figured out what to do with that one).I especially liked how some of the early levels, in particular, were designed to make full use of the flying enemies. Having the level be interconnected by windows/ledges is cool enough, but when there are gargoyles roaming freely through the level using paths not available to the player... that made the maps feel so much more dynamic, and never knowing for sure if there wasn't some winged pest creeping up on me from behind added quite a bit to the experience. My only real complaints with the game were that the lack of textures meant that none of the levels really stood out visually from the rest and there wasn't as strong a sense of progression as compared to DOOM (each of DOOM's episodes has a very distinctive visual style, while Heretic looks pretty much the same through the whole game), and also that there was a little too much switch-hunting and unclear progression. The worst were the few parts where the way to progress was "shoot the bit of wall that looks exactly like the other bits of wall and has a texture which has never before been shootable." The Maulotaurs were a cool boss fight whenever they showed up. I liked that they had so many different moves/attacks (for an enemy in an idTech game, anyway). I kind of wish they had slightly less health, though. A few of the Maulotaur fights seemed to drag on a bit longer than they needed to. All in all, I rate my first experience with Heretic a solid 7/10. Anyone else who's played Heretic, what did you think of it? I'd be interested to hear other people's thoughts on this game.

Honestly I still don't fully understand DOOM difficulty settings. Intuitively, I used to assume HMP as the "default" with UV being for "extra challenge," but then I see 90% of WAD authors assuming UV as the "default" and HMP as "easy mode," so I never know what the author was thinking when they made the map. I might start playing on HMP going forward - if nothing else, I'd like to normalize that being the "default" option, so that there's room for an "extra challenge" option - but I also don't want to miss out on the "full" experience as intended by the WAD's author.

Depends what you mean by "complete." Wads should be in a playable state (functioning linedefs, monsters present, possible to reach the Exit, &c.) but it doesn't have to be fully polished. You can submit a wad that you intend to make further refinement to, but it should at least have the basics down already. For multi-level wads where some maps are complete and some aren't, just let me know which maps are complete and I'll play those.

@Esperpento So apparently I'm just going through a phase of being really bad at Doom for some reason. idk if I've not been playing enough or my mind's just not in the right space lately, but I've been having a much harder time with the last few maps I've played than is reasonable. So, please don't misread my frustration here as directed at your maps; I actually think they're really well put together, and are some seriously cool challenging combat puzzles. Mostly I was getting frustrated by my own lack of skill and failure to live up to my own standards. These maps are mean, for sure, but I think if I played them with a clearer head, I'd have a lot of fun with them. Although, I do still think that having just one or two safe points on the maps where the player can catch their breath would be nice. It's easy to burn out on the intensity if it's all high-intensity, all the time; moments of downtime would give contrast to that. TL;DR - Good stuff, tightly-designed and challenging. Sorry I'm so bad at Doom lately for some reason. I really need to play more Doom outside of these videos; get back in the groove, so to speak.

Yeah, I figured there was probably some ammo/pickups I had missed, and I probably would've tried to find them if I weren't pressed for time, or hadn't saved while backed into a corner by the two Archies. I completely didn't see the Plasma Gun - in fact, I'm not sure it's possible to see it until the archies are set loose. If I'd known it was there, I'd definitely have tried to push past the Archies and grab it, so elevating it to make it visible strikes me as a good idea. Maybe even make the sector it's on bright/glowing, since the player (or, at least, I) will be trying to run out of the Archies' line of sight and might not be super observant in that moment.

@Fiendish Cool maps for sure - I'm liking the E4 aesthetic (although, this is a lot more polished than E4 was). I wasn't able to play much of it, unfortunately. I wasn't able to keep up with the WAD's difficulty, and if I'd had more time, I'd probably have tried harder or maybe restarted on a lower difficulty setting, but since I ended up recording this super late (several hours after the video was supposed to be published, in fact), I had to cut it short. I definitely want to come back to it at some point, though. This is good stuff here.

I'm not going to play unfinished maps here, but it'll take me a while to get through all the WADs that have already been posted in this thread anyway, and I'd be happy to check out any completed (i.e. playable with monsters) maps you want me to if and when they're ready. I intend to keep making these videos for a while yet, so there's no hurry.

@Lippeth Both maps of Super Slug; these were of fun. While they weren't anything groundbreaking, it's a well-executed classic techbase, and I respect that. The visual theming and details are definitely the WAD's strong suit; good stuff here.
  23. A few weeks ago, I had a dream - the most vivid dream I've had in a while - where I was inside a DOOM level. When I woke, I realized that it hadn't been one of the official id levels, so I set about recreating it in DOOMbuilder, as best I could remember the level from my dream. There were only a few rooms in my dream, not enough for a full map, so over the next few days, I slowly built it into a full, playable level. I had a lot of fun making this; the vibrant techbase aesthetic made a nice change from the drab industrial setting of my other ongoing DOOM project. I hope you have as much fun playing it! Update: v1_2 Renamed file from DREAM.WAD to DREAMTEK.WAD Added linedef action 62 to the lift near the Invisibility Sphere so it may be activated directly as well as by the tripwires. Modified the Invulnerability secret to allow the secret to be "discovered" without actually picking up the Invulnerability sphere. Reduced the amount of Plasma ammo across the map to reduce the power of the BFG and give greater value to secrets which contain Plasma ammo. Slightly increased the number of rockets available in the outdoor arena. Removed a few Health Bonus items from the outdoor area. Download: Dream Techbase v1_2.7z Compatibility info: IWAD: DOOM2.WAD Compatibility level: Vanilla Tested with: Vanilla, Chocolate Doom Difficulty settings: Implemented Advanced movement (e.g. jumping): Not supported, may cause sequence-breaking Mouselook: Not recommended, but not strictly forbidden. May cause non-critical sequence-breaking/negatively impact difficulty balance. Screenshots: Changelog:

@Nootsy-Nootsy I had a fun time with this map, for the most part. I decided to run it vanilla just for the hell of it, and because I wasn't 100% sure from reading the forum thread how vanilla-compatible it actually was and I wanted to find out. (just a heads-up: idk if my tone in the video sounds particularly unenthusiastic but if it does that's less because of the map and more because I've just been feeling a bit off all week).

A Techbase level inspired by a dream I had

With some of my early releases here on Doomworld I set a precedent for my maps having lots of surprises and traps, and I admit, sometimes I struggle with feeling like I have to live up to an expectation of devious ambushes in my maps now, even when I'm not entirely sure how to implement them. But I do like to keep the player on their toes, and I'm glad to hear you think it worked out well in this one! Thanks for the video; Getting cornered by the cacos in the Plasma Pagoda was a cool moment; I honestly didn't know they could get in there! As for the Invuln secret: there's enough going on in that fight that I don't think it makes things too much easier - especially if the player hasn't found as many of the other secrets.
