Source engine vs. Unreal engine 3

Everyone here attempting to compare engines talking about the specularity of a shader is clueless.

Music/Media Players- what should I use?

foobar and global hotkeys. Music just comes out of the speakers, all I ever wanted.

EA To Charge For Game Demos

It's just an idea. Don't buy them: idea fails; everything goes back to normal. Acting like a potential customer rather than a sperglord sure makes these things easier.

What's the scariest thing you've ever seen? [bump]

The best hallucinations are those that completely overwhelm what you're seeing without actually changing the details in your field of vision... It's hard to explain, but I once hallucinated being on top of a train's passenger wagon, looking into a mellowing orange sunset surrounded by gorgeous purple clouds. Once I broke free, I realized I was just looking at that particular's room decoration and scattered objects from an odd angle. There was no fading, nothing was lost in a swirl of smoke or gradually became transparent, I was just looking at things wrong, the way you may, bored out of your mind, look at the creases of your pillow and image they're canyons in an alien planet.

    I'm switching my party affiliation

I call it the 'Tree-house Club Syndrome'. Everyone worries about finding like-minded individuals instead of bearing the weight their ideals/opinions (let alone apply the scientific method to them). It's not US-centric by any means but the two-party system has a way of qualifying every assertion as black/white, good/evil depending on which side of the fence you are simply because there's no tangible third side to break this image I have of 12 year olds up in their tree-house plotting against the kids next door with a passion.

Linux - to install or not to install?

Linux was a mysterious thing back when we were playing DOS games and using the non-NT Windows branch. I became a decent enough linux "power user" in six months coding for it. There's nothing there you can't do in Windows, and every grievance is stashed one Google search away, just like any regular Windows inquiry. Seriously, there's nothing fancy in it. The CLI is far better, but nothing you can't get with Powershell, coreutils or Perl/Python scripts, the filesystem is odd at first but not intrinsically better or worse, the GUIs mostly suck in comparison to the refined approaches of other companies, but they're not dysfunctional by any means, packages make it easy to add shit, probably much easier than installing stuff in Windows, and if you stick to Ubuntu or similar chances are it'll be smooth sailing, or just a patch away from compilation. Compiling, by the way, is not an arcane art: if configure/make fail horribly chances are you didn't follow the instructions or the code is too damn large/complex for you to tinker away till it works, even if you're an experienced coder. Drivers used to be hell but it mostly works now, and if you run it in a VM that's not something to worry about. Go for it, can't be afraid of software. Of course you'll never compare to the admins with ten, twenty more years than you using it, but a mid-high level of understanding is not hard to obtain. Don't confuse command-line voodoo for actual know-how, most of that shit can be perfectly accessed via the GUI, while the real everyday "magic" of Linux resides in its powerful set of tools to automate/script complex tasks. Something that goes pretty much untouched unless you plan to get work/study done with it. If not, it has nothing to offer you.

    Project Vega: Cancelled

This is probably the cornerstone of his failure; this could be a spiritual successor to System Shock, Dungeon Keeper or a 3D Dwarf Fortress. As an oldschool FPS, it could be highly experimental in its level design the way The Void currently is or Unreal was in its time. It could be more about exploration and puzzle-solving like The Dig or, to use 3D examples, the Penumbra series, Pathologic or Amnesia. Even if you found people willing to pay for what essentially plays as a Doom TC in 2010, why would anyone fund this?

    A somewhat plastic quality...

The telltale sign of this bygone era is the Gouraud shading, rather than the blurry textures. Use gradients and "indexed" textures using a completely inappropriate palette.

Tips about being a good moderator?

User behavior and subsequent punishment is easy to deal with; just play by the rules. Pruning memes when they become derivative and banning mediocre-to-shit posters is far more complicated. Don't be afraid to have a shadow government of "elites" that give you tips or advice on trolls/idiots. You can't waste your time away manually scouting everything. Just apply judgement, it's not rocket science.

Poll : Your current web browser?

Remember that, at the time, Mozilla was also pushing inane extensions. (eg. see the CSS abortions). Microsoft will react to the market (it is doing so, in fact, with the renewed Javascript engine in IE9, the open sourcing of vital code from the HyperV, etc.). What I do not understand is why the IE group couldn't come up with a better solution, or keep up with the other browsers, for that matter. For all the M$ childish bashing and linuxtard hate, Microsoft is still a company fundamentally composed of thousands of extremely bright people. Hindsight is a bitch. While the HTML4.01 standard was published three years before IE6 and XHTML1.1 that very year, if there was a thing no one mentioned back then was "W3C". Thankfully we're out of that blatant Internet Dark Age.

Poll : Your current web browser?

In Microsoft's defense, there's thousands upon thousands of business webapps/webfronts/web managers in the world that work in nothing but IE6. Having the largest share of the market gives you a certain responsibility not to fuck whole global-spanning systems and waste millions of dollars. While other browsers can play the Standards route safely, they have to phase out the lack of compliance very very slowly. It's a shitty situation, but you can't really blame the private sector. How could they tell the coders and designers were doing a lousy job? Ideally they shouldn't have to worry about people doing the job wrong in such a subte way its effects echo on global scales rather than impacting the very company. This is a very difficult problem to recognize, specially considering the age of some of these subsystems, born in an age where no one followed the standards, nor was there support or even real commitment from part of the browsers. Ten years ago it seemed 80% of the World's business ran in COBOL. Now, it seems to be more like 40-60%. In 2009. Think about it, think of the inevitably and logically following realization that there must be millions upon millions of lines of code depending on IE6's quirkiness, unmaintainable pieces of shit from a forgotten age with questionable programming practices and missing documentation. Modification is nigh impossible. Recreation from scratch is imminent, but it all comes at a cost. Ponder about the ramifications of this code failing. How many businesses depend on it? How many people's insurance, banking, water, electricity, gas, jobs, logistics, transportation, medical records, tax records, IDs, databases and assets depend on this ancient code not failing miserably?

Poll : Your current web browser?

Chrome. Every other browser out there is slower and likes wasting screen estate with their own chromes. But, I also keep IE8 and Firefox for those rare/webapps sites that don't work with anything else. In 2009. Sigh.

Enjay: 1) No game I own ever did this to me. Besides, "slow" internet connections have no bearing on this transaction. We're talking about some kind of tunneled TCP encrypted challenge, I'm pretty sure a Wireshark capture wouldn't yield more than 10KB of data. But, if you prefer asking "permission" to a piece of plastic via a rootkit/driver, I guess that's ok. Myself, I dont't even own an optical drive any more. 2) No game I own ever did this. Are these impressions up to date? I agree it should let you skip on patches, but it seems a bit of a no-issue, what game would you rather not patch? I can't think of a single one. 3) I loathe ads too, but it's just a small window that shows up after you quit the game, if at all. Can be closed even before it downloads the offers. It's ten times less offensive than your typical unskippable EA/nVidia/Ati/Developer binks.

    # It doesn't stop you from playing games if you don't validate against their servers (it tends to do it if you're online but it won't forbid you from playing in offline mode). It's no more complex (albeit slower to startup) than a cd-check. # Updates are bad? # It only advertises its own deals.
