Sorry, but I'll just have to kick you in the teeth now. I don't care how incompetent 3DRealms is (and they clearly are), pouring millions and millions of dollars into a project just to abandon it eight years down the line isn't something any publisher would do. They'll release the game eventually, horseshit or not, and get some of their money back.

Mine doesn't.

Writing a WAD reader, need help from programmer types
Lord FlatHead posted a topic in Everything Else
Hello. I've been working on a WAD reader in C, and it just doesn't want to work right. I was hoping some of you programmer guys who have (or have not) worked with the format could tell me what I'm doing wrong. Source code, compiled .exe, test wad and sample output file : http://users.pandora.be/flathead/storage/wadfucker2.zip (25 Kb) As you'll see from the included text file, everything goes fine until about linedef #36 - at that point the buffer I read the linedef information into seems to be filled with random garbage, or most likely nothing at all. Strange thing is, it works fine on small maps (handful of linedefs, 3 or 4 sectors) but whenever I try it on a decent-sized map it does this. I know my little wad file isn't at fault either since I checked in a hex editor. Anyone ? Thanks in advance. -
I was referring to Windows Media Player. Also I don't know why so many people hate Quicktime as much as RealPlayer, Quicktime has never given me any problems, it hasn't hijacked any file types or done anything else to piss me off. Half the times Mozilla, IE or Opera try to play a Windows Media file or a RealWhatever file it breaks; .mov files work about 95% of the time. But sure, enough geekery.

Oh, so you're not using a Windows operating system.

Writing a WAD reader, need help from programmer types

Back when I was your age, we had to carve our transistors out of wood. -
Said it before and will say it again: graphics does not equal number of instructions per pixel. It's obvious man-years of artist time went into UT2k4; this 96k game, while being technically impressive, honestly doesn't look very impressive graphically.

I didn't, Visual Studio .NET did. -

Reader. I was thinking of writing a proper renderer and collision code for it too, just as an exercise in C/C++. Fredrik, arguments over which programming language is better than another are the lowest, saddest form of geek discourse :) So let's not. -

My original idea was to read, for example, all the linedefs at once into a buffer using fread(), then going through them one one filling up an array with the values I needed. For some odd reason the buffer got filled with NULL values after a certain point though, so now I just read the records one by one. Seems to work, except I still get a few missing lines now and then. Clicky. -

Hacked on it a bit more and now it works perfectly. Guess I panicked a bit too soon. Heh. -
First images here. http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/cassini/main/index.html How disappointingly like Mars. Let's hope higher resolution shots are coming.

Huygens probe lands on Titan, sends back images

Ah, that's more like it :) I'm as clueless as everyone else to what's in that picture exactly, but with a little imagination it does look like a rugged coastline on another world - which is awesome. You know, as in the original meaning of the word, not as in 'my hands are awesome!'. -

I was referring to that one picture taken after landing: what seems like a fairly flat plain strewn with boulders, just like Mars. Don't think I'm not impressed by the fact that NASA managed to land there and send back information, but I half-expected a more exciting scene... diamond mountains maybe, or lakes of molten chocolate. Oh well, fair enough. -

It's already landed on the surface, stupidhead. -
http://games.tiscali.cz/clanek/screen.asp?id=8141 I want to meet the jerk at id or Activision who selects these and punch him in the nutsack. First one looks like it could have been taken from the leaked Doom 3 alpha, for christ's sake.

Buy Doom 3 for XBox, I read Doom 1 & 2 are going to be included with it.

Apparently the biggest problem right now is not getting the money, but figuring out how to spend it efficiently.
