  1. Hi guys, I used to be a regular on here about a decade ago, wonder if there's anyone still around who remembers when I was the moderator of the Doom 3 forum... (good times!) The reason I'm posting is that I have a Tumblr dedicated to old-school FPS games (primarily the id Software and 3D Realms games from 1992 to 2000). I recently found an old, very crappy audio recording of John Carmack's keynote from Quakecon 2000 on an external HD and noticed it wasn't available anywhere on the web anymore, so I uploaded it to archive.org. Wanting to get it out to a wider audience I'm posting it to a few forums where I think my fellow Carmack/id nerds might be congrating. So I guess for you Carmack geeks and oldschool Quake/Doom 3 guys, you should go have a listen here. I'm also looking for more cool Doom/Quake/first-person-shooter related stuff from that era, would be awesome if anyone could point me to something cool to post. I don't mind if it's super-obscure or technical, as long as it's something cool that relates to classic FPS games. So, yeah. Thanks! DOOM!

Things that Piss You off about Modern Day games....

"Photorealistic" games where everything looks like smudgy plastic. I'll go on record as saying Team Fortress 2's graphics are 10x better-looking than Doom 3's.

Thoughts on some new medical drugs out there?

I just eat mushrooms these days.

    World Trade Center

Don't forget dubious insider trading prior to the attacks, WTC black boxes that were recovered without any media coverage, unprecedented lack of military response (clueless fighter jets), simultaneous hijack wargames on 9/11 confusing the FAA, people losing limbs from unexplained secondary explosions in the WTC basement (again, no media coverage), the weird collapses of WTC 1 & 2, etc, etc. These are all strange aspects to the story that deserve looking into. Besides, you can make a good case for conspiracy even without speculating about the physical evidence. Conspiracy theories aren't crazy or retarded. They're fun and interesting and might lead to positive changes when respectable, intelligent people approach them in a sensible way. Tinfoil hatters = bad. Physics engineers who are critical of government reports = good. It doesn't have to be a Paranoids vs Skeptics insult match, y'all.

    World Trade Center

I'm currently agnostic about the 9/11 conspiracy stuff. It looks like at the very least there were people in the US with clear foreknowledge who didn't do anything, and I guess people within the US power structures might have had a hand in it too. It certainly came at a very convenient time for the current administration. There's a lot of unresolved issues about that day, that much is certain. The only thing I get worked up about is how "conspiracy theory" has become such a bad word, to the point where believers defend themselves with "but no, no, what i'm saying is not a conspiracy theory..." Well shit, of course it is! Troughout history, people in power have always conspired against the masses who put them there. Sometimes small-scale, sometimes big. Pretending like there's no such thing as a government conspiring against its people is like putting your fingers in your ears and going "la la la". Think about this: if an event similar to 9/11 had happened in, say, Russia - and given Vlad Putin license to bomb the shit of out the Chechnyans, there'd be tons of respectable Americans ready to say it may have been a set-up by the Russians. But that kind of stuff could only happen over there, right? America's leadership is better than that... right? Those crazy tinfoil hatters. Hell, I don't know. I wasn't there. Just don't automatically assume what you read in the newspapers is the whole truth and nothing but the truth. And for the love of god, don't let it make you paranoid.

I'd rather have Oliver Stone do a movie about 9/11 conspiracy theories/thruths/whatever. "JFK" is awesome.

    Where are you from?

Belgium! Land of surrealist art, saxophones and murdering pedophile bastards. More than 600,000 soldiers died violent deaths in a 15-mile radius around my home between 1914 and 1918, yet I've never seen a single ghost. Kind of disappointing :(

    Any RTS gamers at DW?

I've wasted an obscene amount of time playing C&C Red Alert 2 the past couple years, but not much else in the way of RTS's. Supreme Commander looks pretty cool.

    Installing Linux

I have FreeBSD on my other computer, all this Loonixery looked pretty daunting at first but pages like this one helped a lot. I don't know much about other distros, but I guess even with the super user friendly ones (if any such thing exists) it's not a bad idea to read up on linux/unix basics a bit before jumping into it. Know your song well before you start singing.

So THAT'S how conservatives form opinions

Yeah. Freud is one of those people who get frequently quoted like his word is the word of God. "You know, Freud said..."; "You know, Chomsky said..." Yeah, so?

    Half-Life 2/Steam

Steam has always worked perfectly for me and I think it's a wonderful way to distribute and update games. There, I said it.

    Half-Life 2: Episode 1 [No spoilers]

Playing through it right now, just got out of the long-assed dark part. Man does that skybox look cool, though maybe that's just relief after an hour of Doom 3-like zombie killing in the dark. I like it so far.

Fears of a second Cold War

The US has become the Evil Empire. A little genocide here (Central America under Reagan, anyone?), provoking some civil war there (Iraq) ... it's all good. If anything I expect a major Hot War in the next few decades, once people start realising that the oil is running out and hydrogen isn't the magical solution we've been promised. Hm, this is really more of a 'drunken rant' type topic. I'll spare you guys the rest.

    Your very first post

My first post was in June 2000, asking for ideas for my now long-deserted website, which at the time was on Geocities. I think it was on Newdoom too for a while. Ahh, memories.

Some good stuff here. Somehow I lost the ability to pay that kind of attention to my own work. I've been looking for more... minimalist styles.

    Muhammad cartoons

You're talking about dictatorships. Monarchy doesn't have to equal totalitarianism or anything; my country is a liberal parliamentary democracy plus a purely ceremonial/diplomatic monarchy.

    Muhammad cartoons

Like most forms of government/control, it works fine on a small scale. Arguably, there are no systems of government that just "work" when we're talking about countries with hundreds of millions of people in them.
