Widescreen Assets Pack and Appreciation Thread
Robo_Cola replied to OpenRift's topic in Doom General
Couldn't find a widescreen status bar for "Resurgence", so I made one resurgence_wide.zip -
While he's mainly known for his music, I always thought Mark Klem was underrated as a mapper and would love to see something new from him.

Pendulum WIP (11/32 maps) [Boom Compatible]
Robo_Cola replied to Matthias (LiquidDoom)'s topic in WAD Releases & Development
My god this looks awesome, can't wait to play/see more! -
When it comes to general atmosphere and story, Doom 3 is still my favorite. Back before it released, I would look up any kind of info I could on the game and that's actually how I stumbled upon Doomworld. So I have much to thank Doom 3 for in hindsight...

Comfy Maps (or, favourite maps to just exist in)
Robo_Cola replied to Hazel-Rah's topic in Doom General
(Answering this assuming no demons/monsters are present) 1. The Unholy Trinity for Doom 2 The pure essence of the 90's condensed into one single comfy-soulful map. 2. Doom 2: MAP 24: The Chasm I've always liked the surreal vastness of this level, though I'd probably need some guard rails installed for most of the complex. 3. Czechbox: MAP10: Kafkaesque World ^Similar reasons as The Chasm. It's also strangely peaceful... 4. Going Down: MAP31: Stair Crazy Tbh I'd live in this entire WAD if I could, but in this particular level you get a good view of the city and previous levels as well. 5. No Rest for the Living: MAP09: March of the Demons Something about this map reminds me of a large warehouse/storage unit. In my teens, I played in a band and we used to practice in a storage unit, so this map brings back fond memories. 6. PSX Doom: Map 59: Club Doom Reminds me of some clubs I used to go to, so naturally I gotta rank this one up there. Not sure how you WOULDN'T want to live in this level. 7. Fragport: MAP31: The Void Reminds me of some strange dreams I used to have, or some other plane of existence you could astral project yourself to. 8. Community Chest 4: MAP11: The Grotto Also for similar reasons as The Chasm. Reminds me of some of the mountain parks I visited as a child. 9. Speed of Doom: MAP31: 1010011010 Love the aesthetics of this one... 10. Memento Mori II: MAP07: Frustration Disregarding the namesake frustrating door, this is a really comfy sewer-esque level of sorts. So I guess for most of these, because they remind me of certain fond memories of the past = comfy I'm sure I'm missing a few 90's maps that deserve a shout-out though... -

ABSCISSION - Dark, Atmospheric Doom II Megawad [32 Vanilla Maps] Now On IdGames!
Robo_Cola replied to Snaxalotl's topic in WAD Releases & Development
Proud to say I just (barely) managed to beat this wonderful mapset on a pistol start a few minutes ago. I could summarize it as hard as nails (almost reaching Plutonia difficulty at times) with plenty of tense moments throughout. Something I did like about the mapset, was that the end levels were shorter on average compared to the earlier and mid-levels. But the difficulty remained somewhat consistent by about mid-way through. My favorite levels were Map 6: "Slag Dump" and Map 24: "Abyssal Refuge." The latter took me several tries, and when I finally beat it I was so tense and anxious I had to stop playing for a good day or so before picking it back up. Overall, great stuff! -
ABSCISSION - Dark, Atmospheric Doom II Megawad [32 Vanilla Maps] Now On IdGames!

Playing on DSDA Doom, seriously phenomenal stuff. I think Map 06: "Slag Dump" deserves a mention on an updated "Top 100+ Memorable Maps" listing. I found one "bug" on Map 10. The rock platform in the slime pit containing the rocket launcher, shells, and two rockets is tagged as a damaging floor. Not sure if this was intentional. -
I've always like Map 10: "The Mansion" from Memento Mori even though it seems like most people in the community (seem to) regard it as amateurish dribble. Sure it's a bit rough on the edges (being a bit sparse on details and lots of open space), but IMO helps make it memorable as a map I can instantly visualize in my mind.

Stickney Installation - A 36 Level Ultimate Doom Megawad (Vanilla) [FINAL VERSION NOW ON IDGAMES]
Robo_Cola replied to Snaxalotl's topic in WAD Releases & Development
Been keeping my eye on this project since the initial thread start, and currently giving it another playthrough. Great stuff! I gotta ask, who did the music for E1M8? It's a beautiful track... -
Can't speak for spineapple, but it always came across (to me) as the cheesiest sounding track from Doom II. A good track by all means, but more of a guilty pleasure you wouldn't want to be caught singing.

Until the last 3 days, I had never attempted a Pistol Start/No Save run ever in all my years of playing Doom/Doom II. Gotta say it was quite the experience, and it felt like playing the original games all over again fresh because you have to approach everything so differently. The game is definitely harder... and not always in ways you'd expect. My most difficult levels being: The Catacombs Barrels of Fun Against Thee Wickedly The Pit In about that order, now onto TNT and Plutonia...
