What are some WADs with "otherworldly" quality you would recommend?
Chookum replied to Daemonic Synergy's topic in WAD Discussion
Amorphous Euphoria definitely hits the dream-like box with its airy visuals, eclectic texturing, and puzzle maps. Definitely a departure from conventional Doom. -

I decided to try my hand at making a set of textures and getting more familiar with some of the wilder features of UDMF maps. I think I got pretty far with what I set out to do as well. -
Back in the 90s and 00s there used to be a charcoal chicken place with the name - never ate there but the name amused me. It got replaced with a real estate agency when I wasn't looking, so heck upon them.

What was the 1st website you ever visited?
Chookum replied to Sonikkumania's topic in Everything Else
I know the first site I looked up was a Banjo Kazooie website that may or may not have been official. Then I think I browsed Cheat Code Central when that was the hotness. I miss the old internet. -
How many maps have you created / released? (Wadmaker's Wadography Thread)
Chookum replied to Doomkid's topic in WAD Discussion
I'm a little slower on output than some since I've got other interests and goals, but: 33 for my pet project, Headless Chicken 7 for the RAMPs (3 in 2021, 1 in 2022, 1 in 2023, and 2 in 2024) that I will always contribute a map into. 6 Maps for @Clippy adjacent Projects (1 in Christmas Cheer, 2 in Baron Door 1, 2 from Pleasant Vibes, and 1 total jokemap for 30 Screams) 2 Maps for PUSS projects (Mapping At Warpspeed and Summer of Slaughter - I don't think myself much a speedmapper) And 3 maps I made in 2016 for DUMP when I was starting out. Two of them were not intended to be included, but found their way onto the project anyhow. In total: 48 maps. I'm currently working on a GZDoom Expansion Pack for Headless Chicken, doing some experiments with my own set of textures and sprites, and there'll be another Megawad project from me after that in MBF21. Y'know, I haven't tried out deathmatch mapping yet - that's new territory... -
I'm not sure if MP4 files embed properly here, but I did capture this extremely strange moment when I was building Headless Chicken's MAP23: 4-5: Mars Base way back when. Converting it into a GIF ruined the playback since it dropped/mushed together similar-looking frames. https://i.imgur.com/ed5OJh4.mp4

Do you know how to run custom maps in Brutal Doom?
Chookum replied to DiceByte's topic in WAD Discussion
To combine more than one Doom mod together, you can use a launcher program to streamline the process. I'm not too familiar with Doom launching programs for Mac, but according to Doom Wiki, Doom Runner is Mac compatible. It looks pretty robust compared to ZDL, which I use on Windows. You can load multiple mods into Doom at once, and even save configurations into files. -
a reminder to everyone please do a virus check and tell everyone if you wad is safe to download

Huh, reminds me of the containerisation of the maligned .webp format, where people were putting all sorts of horrible things inside the container with the image. It is possible to embed secondary images into them, and other nasty things as well. A lot of "Discord Viruses" work this way. -
I learned long after the fact that it's okay to just cut out big arena fights if they're too disruptive to the rest of the level's pace or tone. At least it's a lesson learned for the next maps and projects.

Liero Doom, anybody? Obscure freeware game from 1998 with worms, grappling hooks, recursive ammo, and excessive gore. Has a modern port in OpenLiero X Main stupid sticking point: How do you compress all 50 or so weapons into something that's not a nightmare to navigate and 'balance'?

Yo dawg, I heard you like Headless Chicken so we're adding One Bite More so you can mod Doom while you mod Doom. -
[Boom (-cl 9)+Extras, on IDgames!] Headless Chicken: Delicious 33 Map Boom Megawad
Chookum replied to Chookum's topic in Map Releases & Development
I think it might be some of the extra GZDoom things crammed into the back of the wad that doesn't agree with the NightDive port. I'd have to investigate and diagnose myself, but I never could've seen the NightDive port doing what it did coming. I'm continuing to plug away at this mod for a mod after a brief creative break with some Godot development and RAMP maps. I'll likely release an RC10 of Headless Chicken if this mod for a mod comes to completion. MAP35 featured in the second half of the video should be complete by the end of the month. -

AUGER;ZENITH MAP09: The Last Resort has a grimy tile bathroom that's locked behind a key. Guess too many people were doing cyber-drugs in there and management got sick of having to evict them. Santa's Outback Bender's MAP09 Bli Bli Billabong curiously has a bathroom that contains a bath with a drunken Doomguy in it, but no toilet. Guess there's an outhouse somewhere... no! Turns out there's no outdoor dunny anywhere in the wad - I'm kind of shocked I didn't notice the first time I played this! As for my own work, there's sector-based crappers in MAP15 and MAP32 of Headless Chicken. I also remember putting a bathroom in a map that was meant to follow on from DUMP2's Rooftop Rumble, but that map was simply not meant to be. -

Tooting my own horn, Headless Chicken, MAP33: I am also fond of the Worm from TV:R!'s Hausterium, even if it is a lot smaller and less impressive than other examples, most of the level is made of it.
