One penny is one hundredth of a pound sterling, while one cent is a hundredth of a US Dollar. As the exchange rate between the pound and the dollar is approximately 0.4933, one penny is worth more than a cent. However, "penny" is also used as a slang term for a one cent coin in America ("1.
