How do you do secrets the "right" way?
treulosetomate replied to Murderous Owl's topic in Doom General
I might be in the minority (don't know, honestly), but I think Doom is suffering from a wallhumping epidemic. It's so stupid. And I'm doing it too, because most wads are basically telling me, "if you want secrets, you better hump every single wall." Even if there is a hint like a different texture, I still don't like it. I'm currently playing TPH. It's great. Might even make my top 10, for real. But the first map already has a usable wall in an inconspicuous place without any hints (as far as I can tell), and it makes me lose interest in secret hunting for the other maps as well. Which is a shame, because some secrets are still pretty cool, and I wouldn't want to miss them. But you never know what you're going to get. I'd be happy if we got rid of usable walls altogether. But that's probably too radical. If anybody knows some wads that have - only 1 or very few secrets per map which also aren't an afterthought - no usable walls - some kind of puzzle to figure out - big secret rewards like bonus fights, bonus areas, or major map transformation please let me know. I want to play them. -
How much do aesthetics matter to you in Doom? [Poll]

Imagine your favorite WAD, but every texture is replaced by startan and all details unrelated to gameplay are removed. -
Or you could look up the authors on doomwiki and see what else they've made.

What does it take to become a Doomgod (in your opinion)?

Don't forget the items. -

Without saves, of course. -
What are the diifferent likes on doomworld for?
treulosetomate replied to Monocled's topic in Doom General
They're all the same to me. I wish this forum didn't have a like system. It's always a detriment to the quality of discussions. -
I usually binge a bunch of WADs for a month, then take a break of 3-5 months and play other games. That's how it's been going for the last 5 years.

What is your favorite underrated Doom YTer?
treulosetomate replied to Ash4ash's topic in Doom General
While I was looking for alternative strats for Sunlust maps I found some of Jacek Bourne's videos. He's played some hard WADs like Stardate and SWTW. And he likes to change the colors for some reason. His commentary is a bit robotic, but that's kinda adorable in a way. Also David Asaad's channel because skill. But he hasn't uploaded anything in a while. Hey, looks like someone is finally doing a complete and commentated UV-Max playthrough of Fractured Worlds. decino doesn't want to because he is afraid of the difficulty. Good luck with the secret maps! :D Thanks, but my channel is really just a dumping ground for random games stuff. Not sure if there are going to be any more Doom playthroughs. Maybe when NERF3 is out. :o -
Saves are indeed a good way to practice. You can use saves to practice difficult parts of a map or fight and try different strategies for the purpose of then beating the map or fight without saves. I'm assuming that's what your mysterious doomer meant. If you're instead using saves to brute-force your way through hard fights with poor strategies just to beat them once and move on, then I'd have to agree with your mysterious doomer. However, the Game Police just informed me that getting better at Doom is not a requirement for enjoying Doom, and you're authorized to save whenever you want.

Which self-imposed challenge do you most prefer?
treulosetomate replied to No-Man Baugh's topic in Doom General
Boring answer: Depends on the map. -
Manual saves, not just in Doom but games in general, are basically cheats, and you're often expected to use them.
-
Yeah because freelook is cheating.

Looking for more great sadistically hard maps
treulosetomate replied to Plut's topic in Doom General
Big fan of NERF here. Good suggestion. And I believe, this is the intended way to play those maps. You shouldn't expect to finish them on your first attempt like you would most maps on UV. That's why they are short. You practice them with saves or rewind, decide on a route, then make saveless attempts (or be content having finished them with saves). Most maps are fairly manageable once you know what to do. -

Depends.
