  2. A quick and easy recipe I haven't made in a while:

    knlnTr8.jpg

There are few "real" proportions with this recipe, but I'll try to make some up for the sake of communication:

I start with either some chicken I've previously boiled and pulled or when I'm lazy I'll swing for some of the canned chicken breast, since it's basically just boiled chicken. Little bit of a tuna-y smell to the canned stuff, but heavy spices cover that up well, heh.

Let's just say 12 oz chicken breast, pulled/shredded

Add mayo; I eyeball about as much as it would take to cover the bread I'm using. The mayo doesn't do too much anyway but keep the meat moist.

Add mustard; I'll usually put in a bit more than I put in mayo, but truthfully there is like nothing in mustard and you can add as much as you want without destroying the "healthiness" of this.

Add tons of oregano. Yep, just keep pouring it on; you'll thank me when you eat it. Obviously don't dump the whole container, or even a really noticeable amount of it, but with all the strong flavors of this, you need that oregano to be at the forefront of the taste.

Add salt+pepper to taste; once again you can likely add quite a bit of pepper, as with the oregano, but of course you really don't need more than a tiny pinch of salt to bring out the flavor of the meat.

Add cheese; I like provolone, but truthfully a more sharp-flavored cheese might match the meal better.

A couple varieties I've tried over the years that are pretty good: add Worcestershire sauce, add liquid smoke, add parmesan cheese. However by far the best one I've had is adding hot sauce, specifically the somewhat newer Texas Pete brand Sriracha sauce... omg take off the cap and dump it in. Coincidentally, you'd be surprised at how much the mayo, mustard, *bread* and cheese cut down on the heat of the hot sauce.

You can also take this and mix it straight into a cheap box of Craft mac n cheese, which is enough to feed 2 hungry men that can eat a lot. I think I may have eaten the whole thing once or twice years ago and regretted the decision, so 'lots of food for cheap' is basically what I'm getting at here.

I originally made this recipe off input from my pops when I was wrestling in high school, during times when I had to cut weight (and didn't have much money to buy nice food). All of the ingredients, save the mayo and cheese, (and possibly the bread, but let's be honest here, somebody has to eat the bread armies being baked on a daily basis to conquer our world) are healthy. You can prolly leave the mayo out as well, but I found that a bit of mayo compliments the mustard well on keeping things from getting too dry, especially if you eat this out of the mixing bowl and without the bread (which equates to a very high protein, low fat meal). Of course the hot sauce might be able to flat-out take the mayo's place as well.

Unfortunately I wasn't the only one eyeing the sandwich on the counter...

That's a pretty serious looking sandwich.

I usually boil chicken breast in chicken broth and garlic and that gives it a pretty robust flavor right out of the gate.  Laughing Cow light spreadable swiss is a go-to substitute for mayo if you pair it up with some Dijon mustard.

  9. Made this about 5 minutes after unpacking my new Volca Beats by Korg.

The construction is surprisingly sturdy. The knobs are steppy, which is a bit of a let-down considering it's (nearly) full analog machine. The snare leaves something to be desired, but the kick is very versatile. On the fly beat making when paired with the Electribe is incredibly fun. It doesn't satisfy all my drum needs, and I'll no doubt be adding some PCM drum module or routing a channel off of a rompler / work-station to give the drums a bit more texture. All and all, I won't lose any sleep spending $150 on this little unit.

Haven't had much time to sit down and do much of anything involving the computer. Managed to record this over the weekend though. The loud 'HSSSSSSSS' isn't cam/PC noise. I modified my Monotron Duo and fabricated a metal / wood constructed case for it. Unfortunately, it's grounding out on the steel enclosure somewhere. On some patch cord configurations, one of the oscillators self modulates all over the place and you can change the pitch of the other by how much of your chosen appendage is touching the frame. I thought about fixing it, but it'd be like destroying one of nature's own mistakes. Once the filter frequency cutoff isn't completely dumped, the hiss drops out.

Also, camera stand gave out right after this was recorded.. The cam tilts progressively upward throughout the entire video XD

The Yamaha TX16-W was my go-to 12 bit sampler for ages. It used 720kb floppy disks and only had 1.5mb total sampling memory.. which translated to a pretty good sized drum kit. I don't think I can realistically feel good about spending 45 minutes booting up an OS disk, loading samples, programming performance parameters for each hit.. all by means of a antiquated storage format.

The Korg ES-1 is looking like a winner.

Power jack? They have a lot of problems with that cheap jack. The digi-pots can ruin the whole unit if one takes a good hit as well. Throwing random values on the filter or oscillator pitch will definitely ruin your session.

I like the EA-1, but it's not an end all be all unit. I need a poly synth somewhere down the chain and the sampler unit is something I'm looking into buying if I can get one at the right price.

  14. Tattoos are sort of a recent thing with me, even though I've wanted them for quite a while. So when I finally I finally got a pentacle on my left shoulder blade last year, I was ecstatic. Since then I've wanted a few more, and today I got this on my right forearm.

Part of the reason I got it was to cover up a really bad scar I got there last year from a bad accident. It was large, ugly, and definitely noticeable. But the other reason I got it was because ravens tend to mean a lot to me personally.

I might get another one next year on my other arm to sort of balance things out. Maybe more ravens, maybe something else. Or maybe, just maybe, I'll get the Doomguy...

  15. And it's all due to the shareholders.

For those of you not in New England: Market Basket is both a huge supermarket chain and the last bastion of decent working in the region. I work there along with my full-time job, and the benefits of just working *1-2 days every week* are fantastic, nevermind the people who work full time (we get bonus checks every quarter and profit sharing).

Basically, MB's board of directors has been conspiring against Arthur T (the now-fired CEO) over the bonus checks we get, as well as MB's year-long 4% everything price cut. Their argument being "the more sales and checks you write out, the longer it takes for us to make bank".

So now with Arthur T gone, his cousin Arthur S can now sit on the CEO seat and undo everything "Arty" did. No more bonuses, no more profit sharing...I have 3 people in my department who need those checks to support their kids. It's absolute bullshit.

I lived in Taunton for most of my life. Not sure if the news has traveled up that far, but it's turned into a war-zone within the past few years due to the influx of heroin addicts. Franklin, on the other hand, is like a slice out of Pleasentville. If you ever find the time, right off of the T there's a book store owned by an old couple, The Shire and it is absolutely worth the trip. The website doesn't do it justice. It's massive and smells like 200 years ago.

My big gripe with Market Basket is there's just too many customers clogging up the isle. The prices really are unbelievably low in comparison to Shaws or Stop and Shop.. and I'll be damned if the asparagus isn't cross-bred with bamboo. I live in Franklin now. The closest thing we have is Big-Y. Some good deals, but you're not getting a small pack of chicken breast for less than $8.

Good luck. The Market Basket in Raynham went from causing a daily traffic jam down Rt44 to a ghost-town.

  17. So, I have decided that it is about time to pack up smoking, I noticed that my parents started and that they had this new E-Cigarette thing that cost about 15 quid. Having used some before to try and pack up and not succeeding I decided to give my view point on them, they're shit and to be honest, I would rather just continue with roll ups than smoke that load of shit. My parents responded by saying that they work quite well and I have noticed a dramatic drop in how much they smoke now. Curiosity struck me on this so I decided to buy one.

It's called the "Cloud 9 vaporisor", (what a shitty name, ey?) It's rechargeable and it works by buying a small bottle of liquid called "K liquid" that goes for a fiver (no, it's not Vitamin K liquidised before anyone asks, heh) which you have to fill the device up with and it comes in a variety of different flavours, "classic Virginia", "golden Virginia", "Blueberry" and even a "energy drink" flavour. I have been using it for the past week now and I have noticed a drop in the amount I smoke now (now 50 grams of Drum Blue lasts a lot longer than just over a week). Hopefully now I can pack up for good by the end of the year.

Yes, but quitting the e-cig is the real challenge. It keeps you dangerously close to the more harmful addiction.

Usually they have a selection of flavors to choose from for your refills. Use something close to tobacco and then switch to the worst flavor you can find after a week or so. I went with Clove, and it was really godawful. Made me kick the e-cig to the curb. Took about two weeks of actively using less and less of the e-cig and I was able to kick a 10 year habit, and that was sometime in May or June.

      Best of luck to you.

  18. I beat the first mission in story on very hard in Fzero GX. That was the only one I hadn't done, and I beat it by .005 seconds. It took 2 or 3 hours of hand pain (I don't play consoles much anymore) and heavy concentration. It has been at least 8 years since the game came out, and I just got the last thing I wanted to do in it. Yay.

In other news, I have had a few ideas for maps but nothing really motivating. I think it's from a lack of musical interest - that usually gets me going. Should find some new midi artists to keep up on.

I have a job (!) tutoring that is 4 hours a week and 15$ an hour ... yay end of college where I want to work but can't do what I want around my class schedule. How annoying. I will be done with requirements by January so things should go somewhere then.

Waiting for the last Wheel of time book to come out, I think it's soon? January 8th apparently. Found a few good books lately but I want to go the library again tomorrow. I need to find the rest of the laundry series by stross, and wondering when SM Stirling will put something out again. Don't have the budget to buy much so it's all on the library.

Joined a fantasy football league this September and been doing horrible in it due to some bad drafting, meh trading, and starting reggie bush for the last 5 weeks. Ugh. Newbie tip, never look for the most hilarious names to draft. Also know when division games are. And poor michael vick can't seem to catch a break. If you want some mind-numbing "why is this on the internet" look up manningface.

I think League of Legends will not stop making champions and the winners will all be people who know their matchups. I don't know, I haven't played more than 10 games against AI though.

Age of Mythology is awesome, but the hard difficulty makes things a bit annoying - I hate restarting something, even if it's only 5 minutes. Wasn't too bad when doing the Fzero run but it seriously stopped me from playing Kotor 1 all the way and is probably what stopped me from finishing ME2 and Dead space 2.

Anyway, that's me for the last month or 3.

  19. 18 hours of labor, one c-section and 4 days in the hospital later, I finally can call myself the proud parent of this handsome young man.

It was a very complicated delivery. After we were in the clear, the head nurse informed my sort-of-mother-in-law that my girlfriend and baby were in a pretty dire situation and the c-section was an emergency measure. Ed Jr was facing chin forward with the umbilical cord completely wrapped around him. My girlfriend had an un-diagnosed condition of fluid retention that was putting so much pressure on her insides that the baby was lodged and hadn't budged an inch in 7 hours. His heart rate was decreasing more and more with each contraction, very scary stuff.

I owe quite a bit of gratitude to the nurse staff. They averted what would have been the worst day of my life and ended up making it the best.

I'd say 2-3 years tops and I'll be uploading his first map to /idgames.

When you get really quick with the menus, it's almost part of the total skill of the instrument, and oooh those squishy membrane buttons. I never really felt the need to mess around with any of the parameters in real time. It's home is in early 80s, big pad/strings.. total Blade Runner.

I met this crazy asshole on an IRC channel. One day he admitted to me that he had an illegally sawed-off shotgun and an illegally possessed handgun (he lives in New York, like me, and New York requires a permit to possess handguns). Another user of the channel pointed me to his public profile on the website the channel is dedicated to. On his profile was longitude and lattitude coordinates to his house (seriously? seriously.) and pictures of said illegal guns. Little did I know that the CETME .308 caliber rifle pictured next to his illegal handgun was in fact a fully-automatic machinegun and not a semi-automatic rifle.

I promptly LOL'd about his stupidity and proceeded to paste his public profile in several channels and one person, who was a member of both channels, took notice and LOL'd along with me. During this time, we noted several very disturbing comments and an attitude that suggested that he and his father believed national chaos was imminent and that if it came about that he was going to be free of moral scruples. This was the impetus for us to report him to New York state authorities. We compiled as much evidence (IRC logs, URL of pictures he removed from the HTML of his profile but did not actually delete them from the image host, and his IP / hostmask) and he reported the guy to New York's crime tip line.

As they say, the wheels of justice grind slow, but they grind fine, and as the weeks rolled into months, we wondered if the cops had forgotten about it or something, but then today he got an e-mail (the cops periodically e-mailed back and once called him) saying that they had executed a search warrant at the address provided and had recovered machineguns, sawed-off shotguns (the one he had shown us was clearly visible in the police evidence photos that the news article I read) and pistols. Turns out his father had used a Federal Curio and Relics collector license, which allows you to have elligible firearms shipped directly to your home, to transfer the pistols. However, to do so legally in New York with handguns, you must have a handgun permit, which neither of them had. The machineguns were built from lawfully-acquired parts kits, which are typically built by hobbyists into completely legal semi-automatic firearms (by law, the receivers must vary enough to not accept fully-automatic parts).

I am very pro-gun, I do believe it should be legal to own fully-automatic firearms and it is legal in around 40 states to do so (NY not being one of them) but I also believe that ignoring unjust laws is not a moral way to protest them. It saddens me this young man has been arrested for violating laws that should not exist, particularly the law about "collapsible stocks" that New York has, but at the same time, I cannot pity him too much, he and his father knew full well that they were breaking various State and Federal laws and he was callous enough to make this public for ANYONE that Google searched his IRC nickname (first result, actually) to find.

EDIT : technically they haven't found him or his father guilty, just charged him...but as far as cases go, they just don't get any more closed than that.

  23. I have a set of speakers connected to my PC that I have used for around eight months without problems. Today the left speaker began emitting continuous static sounds. The right speaker is unaffected. Both speakers continue to play sounds from the PC, but the left speaker also emits static sounds. The continuous static (which occasionally changes in volume on its own) is not affected by any Windows volume controls, nor is it affected by the volume knob on the speakers themselves. Disconnecting the speaker wires from the left speaker halts the sound, as does turning off the speakers or unplugging them. I have tried using headphones instead, plugged into the same PC port I use for the speakers, and the headphones do not emit static. I have not made any changes or additions to my PC hardware or software. Please advise me, Doomworld.

Sometimes the housing on digipots are made from cheap plastic that can warp from being under constant heat exposure, like that of an amp being left on for a long time. When it does that, it sends random values from making contact at multiple places. That could be the random volume changes, but it wouldn't explain the static. It's probably an amp problem.

  24. I'm going to be posting up a bunch of free music in the near future, along with dorky little articles about the songs' production.

The first one, "New Faction", was an experiment to see what sorts of sounds I could coax out of an extremely restrictive synth/sampler that I usually don't bother with.

You can hear the song here: http://essel.spork-chan.net/2012/05/limitations-part-1-new-faction/

If you liked "18 Apostolos" from Seventeen More Times you'll probably like this too. Check it out! Share it with your friends! Put it in salads!

Very nice work. The sweep / pad sounds right out of a Korg M3/Oasys. The piano patch is very lush as well - Hard to believe this all came from one wavetable synth (and from what I hear from the comparison clip, a wavetable synth that sounds more or less like a mid 90s rompler).

Makes me miss my Yamaha TX16w. It had this clunky, awful interface with a grand total of 1.5mb of sampling memory. All samples had to be loaded from 720k floppies - A true nightmare to work with. But, after the hours of toil and navigating that 2 line LED, the feeling of satisfaction was a hell of a lot greater than dragging a wave file into an awaiting channel and being done with it.

Maybe I'll give that a try. I always end up using way too many VSTs and worse-off, using a lot of stock pre-sets these days. :\
