  1. I didn't know exactly where to put this post, so I figured this would be the best place. I do know that you all probably get a lot of people asking questions like this so here's a disclaimer. If you don't want to read another post where someone asks what is best for his/her system just move on to the next post.

Basically what I'm going to do is keep a 'pre-buy' diary of all my decisions and the reasoning behind them and hopefully if someone has some good non-biased advice about something I might be doing wrong or a component that would be better than my choice, please speak up. I don't have the money to build this thing in a weekend, so I'll be buying new components monthly with a limit of about $300 per month until it's complete.

I do want to say this though so you all understand why I have to do this. I'm a survivor of an erupted brain aneurysm in 1996. I can still think and make decisions but I have a severe cognitive disorder so I get very, very confused trying to understand certain things.

    Here is my initial idea

Okay, this month I'll be buying the case, fans and power supply. This one is pretty much personal taste I guess but I'll include it here anyway.

    Case: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=627446&sku=DRG-C-MB
    Power Supply: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=32343&sku=TC3Y-6001
    Fans: 4x http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=862400&sku=U10-80142
    Extras: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=108142&Tab=1&NoMapp=0

I like this case, it looks very nice and I'm going to go with the blue theme overall. Not much to this choice but it's a start.

      That's ugly :)

I'm looking for a case with a side window so I can light the thing up. For the case, I'm looking for something functional and roomy that I can show off.

Window mod kits are cheap and easy to install. Get the black case I linked to, and some cold cathodes, maybe UV reactive cables and such. There are plenty of inexpensive mods you can do (you could even get blue-lit 120mm fans if you can find any that push enough air) that should look pretty cool in the same theme as you originally seemed to be going with.

Oh, by the way, that case I linked to has the option, I believe, to install the HD bracket sideways in order to keep your cables from tangling up in front and blocking airflow. You should get a case that has that feature if you still won't go with the one I linked to, and get round IDE cables (or SATA ones if you're using that), as those block less air than the flat ones, should they somehow get in the way (could block airflow to your RAM).

EDIT: Best blue LED fans I'm finding on Newegg:

120mm, pushes 70 CFM at only 30 decibels, by Antec:

120mm, pushes 78 CFM at only 21 decibels (though the reviews seem to speak otherwise about the noise), by Thermaltake:

Either of these would look pretty good in that nice, inexpensive Antec case I linked to. $60-80ish (as of last time I checked, depending on whether you get the black or the beige) with PSU included and with a case that well-featured is pretty damn good.

Other good cases with dual 120mm fans:

This one has a window already, takes up most of the side panel, and has one of the Antec blue LED fans already installed if I remember correctly:

The Antec Super LanBoy has some interesting features, and it's small, and very open. People say it's great for cooling, and it's not bad looking:

This Solution Series case comes with a pre-installed duct from the side of the case to the processor so it can get fresh air or exhaust through there. Most efficient in blow-down configurations, where cool air will come in from outside without disrupting the exhaust fan that is already right beside the processor (doesn't have the HD bracket though, and it's hard to tell if there's a mount for a front intake fan -- sometimes the descriptions of that on NewEgg are referring to fans that are pre-installed and neglect to mention additional mounting):

I'm glad to see that you mentioned this case. As I've been browsing through different case designs I've been bookmarking the one's that looked interesting. This is one of the ones I liked. I suppose I can live with the silver color but what the heck is that big green button-looking thing on the front of the case that says "Push Open Now"? Looks like I can put filters on both fans too, perhaps some blue ones.

I think this PSU (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=905184&Tab=0&NoMapp=0) would look pretty sweet in that case if I can mount it upside down to take advantage of the window. Can I do that, is that legal? That wouldn't be the set in stone choice for a PSU though as I'll be looking for something quiet first and foremost. This PSU has a fan controller on it though so I'm assuming I would be able to turn it down a bit to lessen the noise.

Cool beans. Seems like I'm starting to home in on my new system. You've been awesome with your advice.
