So the other week I found a praying mantis hanging around on my front porch, so a few days later I decided to take it in before it freezes to death. After buying a plastic terrarium from the local pet store, along with a small supply of refrigerated wax worms, I was rarin' to go. I went outside, coated the bottom of the terrarium with some dirt and some bark mulch, put a few sticks in, and lured the mantis in.
Owning a praying mantis is FUN.
Aside from its diet of wax worms, I fed it a succession of crickets from the garage, and today I caught a grasshopper right outside and put it into the terrarium. And now I give you a blow-by-blow of what happened in the terrarium. For the purposes of my convenience, I will name the mantis Frank, and the grasshopper Ernie. Note that I have not given the mantis a name, nor am I actually likely to.
Frank looked at Ernie, then Frank's head swiveled around atop of its long thorax so Frank could keep its eyes locked onto Ernie as Frank progressed steadily towards a position where it could pounce. When Frank got close enough, it locked its forearms on Ernie with a snap, and immediately took off half of one of Ernie's hind legs. Ernie quickly sprang free from Frank's grip, breaking its other hind leg in the process, but not completely severing it from its body.
Frank went for Ernie again, this time when Frank captured Ernie, he took off the other half of Ernie's hind leg and started nibbling on it, allowing Ernie to escape yet again. Frank took a short break from the action and chowed down on the leg, breaking it open with his incredibly strong mandibles and eating the juicy muscular grasshopper meat inside.
After Frank was done with the leg, he went straight for Ernie yet again. Another quick snap later, Ernie was firmly locked with the grip of both of Frank's forearms. Desperately, Ernie started biting at one of Frank's forearms as Frank patiently went to work at Ernie's thorax.
Inevitably, Ernie's head fell to the bottom of the terrarium, and Frank reigned triumphant, and continued to bite and chew at Ernie's thorax.
