    Common Map-making Errors

When you say 'fatal' pits, do you mean those with a well-disguised secret exit or those with no exit at all?

    Common Map-making Errors

Hey, I'm just getting into making some Doom 2 maps in WADauthor, and I'm trying to avoid making stupid/predictable/boring levels in general. Can anyone please give me some advice on what they think generally ruins user-made maps - be it bad key placing, level themes, etc - as I'm not particularly experienced to be honest and there's no excuse for making bad maps in this day and age :)

A teapot calling the kettle black

So is Bush's argument that you should vote for him because John Kerry said 'ass'? They should have shown Kerry holding a bag of pretzels and laughing :)

The first time you met the Spider Mastermind...

When I got the registered version of Doom, I actually played through Ep 3 before Ep 2 - I'd played the shareware to death and Ep 3 looked really good in the screenshots, plus I'm an impatient bitch :) As seems to be the case for most people, I killed it first time and thought it was a let-down. Then I played Ep 2, got to the last level thinking it'd be easy and spend 3 DAMN DAYS trying to kill it. I always thought Spidey should have been in Ep 2 and Cyb in Ep 3 - it would have been a much better build-up, plus the difference in hit points just doesn't make sense when you consider the order you meet them in.

Games You'd Like to See Remade with the DOOM Engine

Not quite on topic, but a remake of the original 'Dark Forces' with jDoom could be quite nice, especially if multiplayer could be added. edit: of course, Lucasarts are notoriously letigious when it comes to 'homages' to their games, so this is probably just wishful thinking :(
  6. Sorry for the caps in the title, but check this: http://www.microsoft.com/security/incident/download_ject.mspx Apparently, there's a new virus spreading around that can attach itself to websites - I don't know much about viruses or this one in particular, but it's suggested that until Microsoft find a fix we all stop using IE and try something else.

    Beserk Packs

Thanks, it was beginning to bug me not knowing... :)

    Beserk Packs

I was playing consoledoom.wad today, and came across the first level I can remember (map09, Deimos Lab) with two Beserk packs in. I know that Beserk lasts until the level ends (despite thinking for 8 years it ran out after the red tint disappeared), but does picking up two Beserks in one level make you any more powerful?

    Doom: the movie?

taken from http://www.computergaming.com/article2/0,2053,1489840,00.asp ----- "Warner Brothers is taking DOOM very seriously, even putting it on a fast track. John Wells (known for producing ER) and Lorenzo Bonaventura (brought The Matrix, among others, to Warner Brothers) are working to get the movie made. Todd "Movie Hell Knight" Hollenshead: "I think DOOM 3 is a great property...and so do [Wells and Bonaventura]. So we're focused on a strong script and from there build the momentum to attract the right director and actors." ----- Well, having recently read the Doom Comic in the '10 years of...' section, and heard some bad comments about the Doom novels, I've become a little dubious about how a film of Doom could actually work - and judging by the fact that the movie license has been bouncing from producer to producer for the last 10 years, it seems I'm not the only one. My reasons: 1) The plot of Doom was essentially an afterthought, as id freely admit, and similar stories have been done many times before in movie form (Event Horizon has kind of a similar plot). 2) The ambience of Doom was, according to John Romero (I think) a cross between 'Aliens' and 'Evil Dead II', and both of these films are classics of the horror genre. It would be hard to make a Doom film without taking into account these influences, yet at the same time almost impossible to actually better these films (even Alien3 and Evil Dead III were a bit shit, to be honest). 3) The precedent for turning games into terrible films. Tomb Raider or Super Mario Bros: The Movie, anyone? 4) The difficulties in implementing dialogue - e.g. the Doom comic is made up entirely of the Marine talking to himself like a madman, and as he's the only game character that can talk it's hard to see how much of a script could be made (unless they add new characters, which would detract from the 'isolated' feel of the games). 5) The only guy I can think of that looks like the Marine is... Rick Moranis (a shitty point to make I know) Am I being a little twatty over this? Or is anyone else left a bit cold by the idea...
