Emulated surround sound good enough for Doom 3?

Well that's exactly what this c-media mixer program for my onboard sound asks for. For 5.1 it asks to plug the additional cords into the mic outlet and what not. But it doesn't seem to make a difference one way or the other. I don't get sound out of like 1-2/3 of the outputs on the back of the computer (from the speaker inputs).

Emulated surround sound good enough for Doom 3?

Forgot to mention this: What's weird is my onboard sound chip has 6 channel/5.1 support, as indicated in the mainboard manual. Only thing is the speaker set requires two additional plugs for implementing 5.1, one in which my current setup doesn't have (black and orange outputs). Only outputs I have aside from the standard green one are a blue and red one. And those seem to be for mic and line in. Been fiddling with the connections for several days but to no avail. I have no idea how the hell I can enable 6 channel without the proper outputs. How the heck can my onboard sound support 6 channel but not possess the proper outputs required to utilize it? If anyone knows anything about this please let me know. I don't want to have to shell out extra money for a sound card if I don't have to.
  3. Recently purchased a surround speaker set for my comp for Doom 3. Altec Lansing VS3151. Decent enough sound for the price (US $60). This thing can emulate surround in 2/4 channel, but since I don't have the inputs required for actual 5.1/6 channel (have onboard audio, no actual sound CARD), I'm not really getting the real deal. Tested the emulation with the Fight Club DVD. Sounded great. And I was able to select 5.1 surround in the menu (obviously or I wouldn't be hearing the surround). What I want to know is if this will work for Doom 3's surround capabilities. I'd like to think so, since this thing can emulate 5.1 on DVDs well, but since this is a game its a whole other ballgame for all I know. If anyone knows whether or not I can still utilize Doom 3's surround sound features in 2/4 channel surround emulation, let me know. If not I guess I'm gonna be in the market for an Audigy 2 or something similar. What's weird is my onboard sound chip has 6 channel/5.1 support, as indicated in the mainboard manual. Gamestop about to ship game?

Trying to access a huge thread about this Gamestop business over at Planet Doom. Unfortunately their server is on the fritz (was indicated so for the 29th anyways). Hopefully my pre-order swap was not done in vain (if I still get the game eventually I don't know how it would be).

    Gamestop about to ship game?

Not too late, dude. I made a pre-order just today at Gamestop. I'm pretty sure most places are still accepting them. Get on with it, man! If you can afford the game, $54.99, then you can afford a small slice of that which will act as the pre-order deposit. Hopefully you already knew this. If not, then not many people can help you.

    Gamestop about to ship game?

I suppose its good that I chose to invest my pre-order in a store rather than via online ordering. I'm realistic: I'll probably see it the same day I'd be able to get it at EB, but even the slight possibility of getting it earlier will draw me in.

    Gamestop about to ship game?

I actually switched my pre-order today from EB to Gamestop. Why? The guy there said the computer said its shipping on the 30th! I might have the game by Sunday! Although he said they usually only get shipments in on Tuesdays, its still a possibility it'll arrive before then. After I finalized the pre-order he said if I didn't receive a call by Monday then check in with them. So it appears some Gamestops are receiving it early and others aren't for some reason. The other Gamestop in my area, when I queried them about the date, said they weren't allowed to put titles on the shelf before their street date. Me thinks not all of these store managers are as by the book as this one was. It could all be BS and just some glitch in the computer date. Who knows. I'm still gonna get the thing in less than a week anyway. More than I can ask for. Although if I do get it early, either Sun or Mon I'll post shots + impressions (like everyone else on here has said).

Attn Best Buy customers (esp in Minnesota)

Ah, message board tiffs regarding game release dates. Smell that? Nice isn't it? The sweet scent of border line retarded. Laguna might be right, though. I contacted two different Best Buys in my area and they both had different things to say about the release. One claimed it would be out around the 1st (Sunday) and the other said they weren't allowed to sell copies until the 3rd, even if they did get them in early. I specifically addressed 'pre-orders' when asking both locations about the release, and that's what they told me. So, like Laguna said, some may be in on an early release and others may not. Most likely depends on whether the resident manager is more by the book on things like this or is willing to put it out earlier. Why the heck would id or Activision care if it came out earlier? It just means them getting a head start on sales. Does it hurt them to have a title on shelves for a couple days when most don't know about it (this being the shelf/non-preorder copies released before the 3rd)? Somebody clear this up. I think what I'm going to do is keep my $5 preorder at EB and just go to the Best Buy which claimed early release, get a definitive/confirmation about it from someone more 'in-the-know' than your standard pimply-faced 16 year old (not insinuating forum users, but a typical Best Buy lackey that claims to know everything), and then decide whether to plop down $10 there.

    Female Character in Doom 3?

I remember a similar dilemma like this that faced NVIDIA last fall when Valve conducted their Shader Day, to test the video card giants' Direct X 9 rendering performance. ATI won it by a landslide. NVIDIA responded that they could solve the issue with drivers, but even Carmack at the time mentioned that their current crop of hardware (NVIDIA's 2003 lineup) was limited with its DX 9 compatibility. In other words, drivers aren't going to solve it, its in the hardware. It seems the same thing is happening again but now its ATI's turn to take the brunt of the performance hit. Funny thing is, they're gonna have to deal with this in the soon to NOW...unlike Half-Life 2 which hasn't even come out yet. NVIDIA has had time to get their act together. ATI is going to have some problems getting back there. I dunno...can these problems be solved solely via drivers? I would think not, but then again I know next to nothing about video card architecture. Someone fill us in.

I specifically asked about pre-order, yes, but I'm pretty sure they were indicating availability in general (pre-orders + additional copies). I have no intention of 'chancing' availability of this game the day it comes out. Added this part to the wrong topic. Sorry mods for same info in a different thread: Well obviously there isn't a consistent consensus among the varying BB locations. The first one I called, one closest to where I live, confirmed they'd probably get the game by Monday, Sunday being the ship date (the 1st). For verification I called a Seattle location and the supervisor there claimed they weren't allowed to put products on the shelves before the date they're advertised to come out. Go to the BB website, you'll see 'Coming Aug 4' on the Doom 3 product page. So, in all honesty, I don't know if its going to matter at all if I switch my pre-order over to BB, seeing as how they may not be allowed to give out copies even if they do get it in on the 2nd. Me confused. I need advice. And I'm bored. Damn...I really need this game now lol.

Is this just in your locale? Or is this a collective thing with all of them? If the latter I'm canceling my pre-order at EB and switching over to BB. EDIT: Just confirmed it with my local BB. He's right: they're scheduled to ship on the 1st. Which means it'll probably come Monday. Still, that's two days before most retailers will get it. I'm switchin' over.

my copy of doom 3 shipped today

A friend of mine looking to get into Digipen (video game design school in Microsoft country) has been fiddling with the editor from the Alpha. Even that early version had great potential, he told me. Very intuitive and does a lot of the work for you (whatever that means). Don't know if this applies to the final build, but the Alpha editor was built INTO the game interface. Press a button and you're in the editor, press it again and you're in game again. Pretty cool.

my copy of doom 3 shipped today

Well, yeah. Quite a different style of gameplay (aside from obvious shooter similarities) + presentation + pacing + atmosphere compared to original. I'm looking forward to a more 'cinematic' experience with this one. A super-immersive and well-paced creepfest is just what I've been craving in the games department for some time. Combine that formula with id and the Doom franchise and you can't go wrong for that particular taste.
