Doom 2 UV speed TAS movie wip: episodes 1-2

This is simply amazing! Please don't give up on this run like I did on mine, I really want to see what sort of final time you can achieve :)

Map 02 glide and Map 08 linedef jump

I certainly won't ever be completing this run, simply due to the massive amount of time making a good built run takes and the number of other ways I could be spending all that time. If any person(s) wishes to continue the run then they are welcome to, however those involved would probably need to have some amount of experience at building demos (or have to spend a bit of time practicing). If you really want an optimal demo a strategy where multiple people all work on the *same* level and then compare timings throughout the level could be interesting. I know when I was building these I would have 'segments' that would allow me to compare times of my run, my previous run and andreys run to ensure I was being optimal. Segments would typically be things that you paused at (such as starting a door to open, triggering an event, etc) to avoid scenarios where taking a tic longer in one segment made the next segment 5 tics faster. The idea being that ever segment should be faster (or at the very least equal) to the segment in the previous run. Having multiple people run the same levels/segments could lead to some pretty optimal times (with the usual problems of ammo, health and route planning). Although this would probably take longer than a single person running it, you could possibly get a better result with every individual having to spend less time on it. Also whilst I do like Map 01 in that demo, please remember that it isn't mine (not to mention map 08 is way cooler and saves more time :) )
  3. After much work I have created the beginnings of yet another built doom run as the potential savings of cack_handed's map 02 trick were too big to resist. The map 08 trick was suggested by Sylvain Chabert and involves getting the red key without triggering the linedef which lowers the floor at the entrance to the room. This is a very difficult and very cool trick, which saves 4 seconds from this level. The replay of both these tricks can be found here. I will probably continue this run on so I'm asking if anybody can think up any other cool and insane tricks that might save a few more seconds in the later levels.

Map 02 glide and Map 08 linedef jump

So was I. However doing built demos of this quality is simply a massive time sink that I can no longer afford

Map 02 glide and Map 08 linedef jump

The run was continued slightly up to using the map 12 rocket jump. This however will never be continued by me so I encourage everyone to take it and do with it as they wish.

    Glide details...

I've only done one such glide so far which you can find in this thread. Position is all important, just a matter of getting that absolutely perfect and then you go on through.

    Doom2 MAP12 RJ

Don't hold your breath waiting for me Edit: Actually I believe I've come up with a way to make my editor work once again (reason I originally stopped is because it broke for me under vista). Currently implementing this, if/when it works the running will begin anew :)

    Doom2 MAP12 RJ

For a shortcut like that? I find a way to get more health.

Map 02 glide and Map 08 linedef jump

And try as I might I just could not shave that one tic off. Just would not happen.

Map 02 glide and Map 08 linedef jump

    Indeed there is

Map 02 glide and Map 08 linedef jump

This run will get done one of these days, of that I promise :). However the tool I use to build demos is having a major fight with vista and uni is busy as hell at the moment anyway. But don't worry, I haven't forgotten about this run.

Map 02 glide and Map 08 linedef jump

Well I was unable to get it done by christmas (obviously) and I haven't since been able to get motivated to work on it again. So timeframe is as yet unkown

Map 02 glide and Map 08 linedef jump

Not sure how many times I've had to talk about the whole going to map32 thing but here we go again. My original replay was intended to improve on andrey's run, and as he went to every single level, I decided to do the same. For this run that uses these two tricks shown I will not be going to map32, the health is not required there as it can be gotten on map17 and map16 requires no health. Whilst I probably won't post up any more replays till it's done I currently am doing map15 and am 23 seconds faster than my 14:02 replay. Hopefully it will be done for christmas, but no guarentees.

Hell Revealed TAS Movie in 16:31

Have not yet watched the run but am extremely excited. I thought the 28minute run was excellent so this should be insane.

    Advance Frame?

Not sure what version you found. But try this one I think I included all the required dll's with it.

    Advance Frame?

I've used some of the tools that people use to create the replays at tasvideos.org and I would say that despite the more cryptic interface my DRE (doom replay editor) is a much better tool since it can step backwards (which some console editors can't do), provides more game info (such as directions, rand seeds etc) and allows you to walk around the level in freezemode. So overall I'd say doom tas'ing and replay editing is superior to alot of emulated console tas'ing and they need to do the catch up.

    prboom-plus TAS question

If your doing recordfrom then you shouldn't have -warp or -skill included as they don't make sense when your recording from another demo. Aside from that it may not like -complevel 2, I'm not sure but it's worth trying a different compatibility mode.

    Tool Assisted UVMax demos?

Looks like an excellent demo. And I'm also pleased to see DRE getting some use, although it's interface is definitely difficult to get a hang of. Building an optimized max demo of any level would take king sized patience in my opinion, just because the level times are so much longer and there's more going on than in a speed run.

Map 02 glide and Map 08 linedef jump

It's not even close in nomonsters. Using a rocket for more boost you can get closer but it's still way off

Map 02 glide and Map 08 linedef jump

Problem with the level 3 jump is that pretty much unless you can do it solo the traditional route is faster because of the ammount of time it takes a monster to walk over to the lift. I tried getting a zombieman in position and strafe running into him, I thought about getting an imp but there's none around that won't take far too long to get. If you can give some clear details on which monsters, positioning and times, then maybe we can work something out, but currently I still don't see it as possible Originally I had so much trouble simply making the glide work *period* that I ended up using the exit I did simply because I was able to get through. Now that I've had alot more practice doing glides (especially the map 2 one) I'm pretty sure I can get through it no worries and get 9 seconds
  23. I'm sure most people know of cack_handed's level 2 trick for doom 2 where the player can be squeezed between an improbable gap and, according to cack_handed, "It should save up to 10 seconds on a built run". Well it does exactly that. This demo here is my attempt at working the trick into a full uv speed run with spectacular results. Final times are 4 seconds for map 1 and 14 seconds for map 2 for a total of 18 seconds. Now if I could just pull off the map 3 elevator jump.....
  24. The title pretty much explains it. It's almost midnight I've been working on this all day, not to mention the countless other days I've worked on it, my eyes are so sore I'm surprised they're not bleeding but it's FINALLY DONE. I have been working on a full built UV speed run of Doom 2 for some time now, and after putting it down a few times I've finally come back and finnished it. I'm a little disappointed in that it's only 35 seconds faster than Andrey's 30uv1437 but I think that merely shows the awesome quality of Andrey's demo. Please watch and enjoy and ask any questions you want on the demo
  25. That my friend is a very nice trick indeed
