    Need help in expanding attic

Attic is a repository where replaced or unused freedoom resources go. In addition to historical preservation, often content from attic gets a second chance or is reused in related projects like Blasphemer. At the moment I have 3 pull requests open, which I periodically update with new material. If you know interesting stuff that used to be in freedoom and isn't in attic yet, or you're a contributor whose material has been rejected, please post it in this thread! Sketches, concept art, source files (as xcf/psd) and unfinished/old versions of your work are also welcome.
  2. Current repo: https://github.com/GeorgePieVG/Lastermaul Attic: https://github.com/GeorgePieVG/lastermaul-attic Lastermaul is a project to create a completely free game, compatible with mods and maps for Hexen. It is a spinoff (or sequel, haven't chosen a story yet) to Blasphemer. At the moment, Lastermaul is in the early stages of development, there are almost no maps, and many replacements are unfinished. You can download the tech demo here: lastermaul.zip

Already added. These are the old nicknames of Vandalorian and Blastfrog respectively. Oooh, the maps are probably the least updated part of attic, thanks! I'm not sure if I need to add a whole Jenesis and other map packs by Jimmy to the attic, at least there's permission to use them and one of the maps. Added the maps by Mechadon and Sergeant Mark IV. By the way, I need advice on what to do with resources that have been removed from the project at the request of the authors? Do they need to be added to the attic?

@MrFlibble Yeah, I was wrong. Sorry if I was too stubborn, please don't take it negatively. Added the robotdog1 edits. At first I thought it was an apt comparison because Realm667, in addition to having edited monsters from various games, also has a lot of original ones from Vader, Amuscaria, and Freedoom edits. Also, content from Share your Sprites/Spriting Carnival threads is often uploaded there as well. But I didn't take into account the subject matter of the site and the intentions of the people posting it. For some reason, the credits file in the main Freedoom repo lists Blox as Bloax too. Added. I'm surprised they didn't get in the game. Looks like it's made from scratch, so I might add.

There could be two reasons for this: 1. The sprites are too big for vanilla. I remember the spider from Lotan's Tomb had issues with sprite height, so it would crash the cast screen. 2. Wesley was unhappy with the direction freedoom was going and wasn't okay with further use of his work in the project, so a new version of the spider was decided not to be added. But that's just a guess, maybe it was just forgotten. I'll look at it a little later when I have more time. Thanks again for your help.

Well, the monsters and texture packs from Realm667 are also clearly intended for public use, but there are no permissions for this, which is problematic from a legal point of view, cuz according to copyright laws, anything not explicitly authorized by the author is forbidden. Even /idgames requires explicit permission at least for redistribution and storage. While for most doom projects such use is normal, freedoom is stricter on this, as freedoom resources can be reused in large commercial projects as well. Postal 4, a pretty big name, already uses them, for example. I agree, these changes are probably pretty trivial, but I'm still being cautious.

First of all, of course, IANAL :) You got it right. Honestly, I think that's more likely to be true. Because I don't see that Flynn Taggart has included the Freedoom license anywhere, or said that this is a contribution to freedoom and that it can be used in the project. When people post something in the development related channels in discord or on the freedoom subforum on doomworld, I assume that automatically means it's a contribution to the project, unless it's stated that it's posted for reference. I would refrain from further legal discussions, fraggle said we don't do them here. However, if I'm wrong, I would like to be corrected.

Thanks for maintaining this! I've picked up a couple things from there before, decided to visit again and found even more. No, definitely not. The only requirements are to include a copy of the license and not to associate yourself with the freedoom project or its authors, and you can do whatever you want with your derivative work. If you want a copyleft effect (i.e. the same license for all derivative works), the GPL or CC-BY-SA are worth considering. Pretty cool sprites! Added. Already added. There's quite a lot of stuff here. I don't think it's all for freedoom Oh, that's Wereknight's torch. Already added. Not sure about that since the author says it's not a serious contribution. Definitely missing a lot, although development is not so active right now. I like Korp's new textures too, including the extras, I think the city texture set should be added, freedoom would definitely benefit from it.

They'd still be useful though. But these particular models don't necessarily need to be stored in the attic, OpenGameArt would suffice. Added. I don't think it was a direct contribution, so it may not be appropriate for freedoom I don't know if it's appropriate on the licensing side, but I'm definitely in favor of adding concept art. LibreQuake does that as well. Just opened the iwad and I immediately saw a bunch of missing stuff. Thanks, I'll look into it. Though also need to find out who made each missing resource before adding them. Fixed. Added, very cool sprites.

Well, at least they're already in the attic :) Yeah, I remember that. Had it saved to my bookmarks, but didn't look at who authored those edits. Thanks, added. Added pistol, I can look for a rocket launcher later. I remember seeing it somewhere. There was also an Octaminator model, I added that too. You mean the taller one? Already added.

@MrFlibble thank you! Added in this commit. IMHO, the most interesting find is statusbar face by mazmon, haven't seen it before. Corrupter monster by Amuscaria also looks interesting. I thought that lamp and some others above were made by Wereknight (CWolf), if not I can fix the credits.

    Blasphemer discussion

I definitely support the inclusion of this font, but it's based on the freeware font Tie Wing. Not sure if Blasphemer may include it

    FD24 (free replacement for id24res.wad)

Maybe instead add the recolored version that Craneo posted? Looks more fitting for a creature that spits fire. And the #development channel in discord also had other stuff worth including

    Zauberer

Good titles. I think the second one would suit the monster made by @HorrorMovieRei for Blasphemer, we can use it as a replacement for Heresiarch (except someone has to complete it first :) ). Personally I would prefer a title in the spirit of metal bands, cuz it fits the style of the game.
  15. GeorgePieVG

    Zauberer

Ice level can be added in the second hub, somewhere in the mountains. And fire level can probably be added in hub 4 or again in the second hub (in a cave, for example). By the way, I remembered another idea of mine. Speaking of Greek mythology, how about replacing the wendigo with a gorgon? And then instead of freezing, it would be petrification. And as a replacement for the ice spell we could use the staff made by ETTiNGRiNDER and Amuscaria, I modified it to remove the weapon parts from Heretic.
  16. GeorgePieVG

    Zauberer

Thank you for your opinion. I don't have any ideas for a plot yet, but I do have some ideas for hub themes: Hub 1: Ghost Town Hub 2: Predominantly natural locations, like in the original hexen or the fourth episode of Blood. Hub 3: Haunted Mansion Hub 4: Temples and lots of flesh (Like the second episode of LibreQuake or E4M7 of Blood). Hub 5: Underworld Kingdom of Hades (In the spirit of Greek mythology) I myself think CC-BY-SA is a more appropriate license and a wise choice, but for now I think we should leave it as it is, as it may make sharing resources with related projects more difficult. Also, developing maps in Hexen format involves writing ACS code.

    Zauberer

I'm going to pick up the development of that iwad posted by Cato, however I want to hear your opinion on the name of the project first. If it's going to be a spinoff for blasphemer, it's a bit different from the theme that was previously proposed for zauberer. Also, if zauberer was relicensed to bsd, the license REQUIRES a name change for all forks. I would choose the name Lästermaul (blasphemer in German), but what do you think? Is it worth changing the name at all?

Nice font update, although it looks like you're playing an outdated release, the font has been changed to a different one

You also had edited versions of the original sounds from Blasphemer. I especially like the new sounds for harpies and plaguewielder from this archive.

    Blasphemer discussion

What do you think about diversifying the music a bit? @jute did a great job composing the soundtrack for the entire game and there are a lot of good tracks (like the one that plays in the first demo), but overall it sounds repetitive. Here is some music that could possibly be used: continuum.mid MIDIs Tristan Clark MIDIs Lippeth MIDIs The Realm of Parthoris soundtrack (beware of E1M9, it's from Duke Nukem 3D) There is one important issue though, vanilla Heretic had the music in MUS format, not MID. Chocolate Heretic will probably play MID files, but I'm not sure about the original DOS executable. So we'll have to convert it first. Edit: we may also add new music for episodes three, four, and five that will play in Crispy and more advanced ports.

Looks like Blasphemer already has PWAD with extra stuff. I think gldefs can be included in IWAD, it doesn't affect gameplay anyway.

Thanks for the feedback and help btw. The symbols on the skin were taken from Freedoom too, but an older version and based on alchemical symbols, I can get the new version of the symbols. The recolored flesh looks really good, my original idea was to do something like corpse frostbitten flesh, but yours looks better.

    Blasphemer discussion

I agree about the face textures, I included them because they are from the same pack. Only the gargoyle fits, I think. But all the others will fit for Zauberer, if development ever resumes. The AGM soldier would be a nice easter egg in the spirit of Build Engine games. WLLSLUD is redundant here, yes. The sky textures are just sketches that I have included separately, they are not intended for the game, but in case someone will find them useful.

    Blasphemer discussion

It would be great, but it's best to do it only after all the map slots are occupied and compliant with Chocolate/Vanilla Heretic limits. Speaking of textures, I picked up some textures from freedoom attic (as well as regular freedoom and librequake) and converted/edited them for use in blasphemer. blasphemnewtex.zip

Agreed, however the recent Freed∞m releases are really good as a new take on mechanically the same game as Doom but with a whole new aesthetic, art style, lore and story.
